JOURNAL: Ashyukun (Robert Babcock)

  • We're awake... but we're very confused.... 2003-04-25 07:45:04 I continue to be confused by what things people take a liking to. In less than 12 hours of being up on the server, the Anime Boston 2k3 Intro has gotten more hits than the AfroKen M:I segment and Love is on the Way (OK, not much surprise there given it's not available for DL yet- I am trying!) and is pushing surpassing both the Battle Athletess M:I segment and several others. It's also (last time I checed) tied with my PPG:R and others for a place on the Star Scale rankings. I find this both vaguely disturbing and damn funny. I mean, think about it- at the core of that 'video' is a truly bad LinkinBall Z video- and it is sitting decently high on the Star rankings.

I'm a fairly happy (though tired... I seriously need to get to bed an hour earlier than I have been lately...) camper. Not only is my best friend from college coming up up to visit for the weekend today (though he's mostly coming up to visit his semi-girlfriend who happens to live in the spare room in our basement at the moment), but our wireless router and one of the wireless NICs came in yesterday afternoon (along with a box of free hair care products that my wife got... this pretty much sums up the package traffic at our house. I get computer parts and DVDs, she gets hair care products....). And it didn't really take that much to get everything up and running using them. It's -so- nice to be able to just take the laptop wherever I want to work on it in the house and still stay connected to the network.

My ACen submission (WLt'FO) should now be all happily encoded and ready to go off to the contest. For some reason, the encode would crash the MPEG2 decoder if I left it at the full 100% CQ, so I had to drop it a percent to 99%. Somehow, that plays back just perfectly, and yet is actually a few bytes larger than the 100% encode. Hen dayou. But, it works, and looks really nice. Hopefully it will do well at the competition. Unfortunately, faced with Euphoria being entered as well, I don't think I have much of a short at all of getting Best in Show, but I'd at least like to think I have a shot at taking Best Comedy. But if nothing else, I should confuse and possibly frighten a number of people, and amuse the heck out of my college buddies who will be there :)
  • Insert Witty Title Here 2003-04-24 12:38:32 I continue to be amused to no end by the Star Scale rankings and my videos' place thereon (is that a word???). Probably the most amusing (to me) is that the 'Quick Afroken Segment" I did for the M:I Project as an emergency backup ( http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?vid_id=13989 ) is actually rated high enough to make the top list. What's so silly about this is that according to my Profile listing, it has gotten something like 31 hits. With 5 people having star ranked it, that means that roughly 1/6 of the people who looked at the database entry for it downloaded it and star ranked it (though I imagine all of my vids that are up will eventually be star ranked by everyone who DL'd them, since I believe that was one of the purposes of the 'no more than 10 unranked videos' to be able to DL locally). It also means that people seem to like Afro Ken >:) MWAAAHAAHAAAHAA! Just wait... juuuuuuust wait.

It also leaves a nice warm, fuzzy feeling to see that Dark Metropolis has one of the highest counts of being star-ranked and still managed to keep a decent score. I suppose after Katsucon I shouldn't be surprised that people like it a fair amount, but it does continue to surprise me a little bit. And, PPG:R is my highest star-ranked vid. To think- I seriously worried that people would be pissed for my throwing a Powerpuff Girls video in with Anime-sourced vids.

On the home front, while I was gone at AniBo this last weekend, my inlaws bought my wife a new iBook. While she really did need it and we couldn't come close to affording to get it at the moment (damn taxes), I found that I wasn't that thrilled with it overall. And no, not because it's a Macintosh :p My wife loves it and I know she really needed a new laptop... but I feel rather bad because her parents had to get it for her and I couldn't. This may sound old-fashioned or chauvanistic, but I really think I should be getting things like that for her, or at least we should be getting it for ourselves. But, what's done is done. She's very happy with the new computer, and it should help make her work attempting to sell a show of her own a bit easier. And I can't say I made it out of the whole thing without having to spend a cent... with now having two fairly new and completely mobile laptops and the apparent approaching demise of my old router, I have a new wireless router and PC cards for our computers coming in.

The submission deadline for ACen is rapidly approaching, and I need to decide soon how I want to submit WLt'FO. I'm leaning towards just doing it over the FTP, but haven't totally given up the idea of sending it in on disc. I think I'll be seriously tempted to send it in physically if the encode will fit on one of my cute mini-CDRs.

I need to be getting started on my NES project vid soon. I want to blow through it before knuckling down on my AWA video. Otakon's submision will be up in the air until the results of ACen.
  • Surrealness 2003-04-22 13:56:02 Grrr. Dammit, the page before this one had the cute Chiyo-chan banner. I want it back!!!!

Quick entry- it's quite amusing. Two of the women who work in my office on the other side of my cubicle wall are chatting about their kdis and Yugi-Oh. It just strikes me as funny. :p
  • Whoa. 2003-04-22 07:39:24 OK, that's just plain weird. And yet makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I took a look at the Star Scale thing after reading 'Strada's journal posting- (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/lists/stars.php). And to my surprise and delight, three of my videos are up there. What surprises me more is that they're not the three I would expect- I would have figured on Dark Metropolis, PPG:R, and Samurai Windu to be the more downloaded and higher rated, being the newest ones. But instead, it's DM (most DL'd and highest rated, though it's still near the bottom of the list. But at least 17 people have DL'd it and liked it! w00t!), PPG:R, and O_O Now We're Gonna Get Bigger Guns.

That shocks the hell out of me. Mind you, I quite like the Big Gun video. As my first AMV it holds a place close to my heart, and was a hell of a lot of fun to make.. But, it is by far the oldest I've got up, and with still (and likely permanently) missing several shows on DVD, and thus not being able to truly remaster it, the picture quality sucks hard. And yet, it seems to be well enough liked. Domo Arigatou, minna. You've made my day, and it's not even 9 am yet.
  • Relief 2003-04-21 22:18:08 The title is for two reasons.

One- the girl I was thinking of in the Yuna outfit at AB was not the 13-year old. Which is good.

Secondly, I should have a fair amount more time on my hands. I did a lot of hard thinking on my longer-than-it-should-have-been-due-to-Easter-traffic-drive home from AB yesterday. After my pokes at the video I wanted to do for Otakon while at AB, I decided that while I probably could actually get the video done- it wouldn't be nearly as good as I wanted it to be, and it would require my spending every second of free time editing between now and the end of May. I might have been able to pull that off in college- but I have to have a life now. If nothing else, it would just plain not be fair to my wife, who already puts up with my sitting in front of the computer staring at animated characters far more than I think most would tolerate.

It will get made. I'll just take my time to do it. I now have all the source I needed for it, and now I have all the time I would need to do it right. I do still intend to send in an entry to Otakon. If WHt'FO doesn't win anything at ACen and DQ itself from Otakon, I'll send it in. If it does, which would be quite cool, I have another option. ;)

Anyways, now I will actually have time to do my NES video, and put the effort that my AWA Masters entry deserves into it. Yes, that's right, put a nice label that says "Kiss me! I'm Nuts!" on me- I intend for my AWA entry to go into the Masters competition. I'll probably get blown away like so many Zaku... but even a Zaku can kick a Gundam's ass if it has the right pilot :)
