"Then look up 'aluminium,' and check the pronunciation guide. You will be
amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. "
Damn right! Sorry, that's always bothered me!

X- posted just about everywhere:
Looking around the Fullmetal Alchemist fan scene yesterday, I noticed something rather disturbing. There are quite a number of English speaking FMA fans who insist on referring to Edward Elric as "Edo" instead of Ed. This is similar to the ongoing debate in the Hellsing fandom as to whether or not Alucard should be "Arucard".
Okay, time for a little Japanese lesson. The reason why characters with non-Japanese names in anime might have a different pronunciation is very simple. The Japanese lettering system is very different from ours. You can't end most words on anything other than a vowel or an "n". This is what causes such names as "Ed" to become "Edo" because it's the closest they can make it.
They also don't have the letter "L" causing Alucard to become Arucard.
They are trying their best to get the names correct and this is the closest they can do.
We English speakers on the other hand do not suffer from these issues. We can say the names correctly and as they were originally intended. The name Alucard is Dracula backwards (thanks to Carly for pointing this out to me) proving that it is indeed meant to be an "L", unless of course Dracula suddenly became Duracura when I wasn't paying any attention O.o.
For non-Japanese speaking anime fans to continue to call him Arucard is, to me, complete nonsense. It would be the same as someone with the name "William" insisting that everyone call him "Biriamu" because that's what they called him in Japan. Same thing goes for Edward Elric. There would be no reason for me to refer to the character as "Edowado Eruriku" when I am more than capable of pronouncing his name correctly. Gah, weeaboos.
Sorry, had to get that off my chest! This is just my personal opinion on the matter so my apologies to any Arucardo (avacado?) or Edo fans on my f-list. I'm an Ed and Alucard fan myself ^_^

Finished FMA!
2008-05-26 06:53:57
I just finished watching the final episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist. How many ways can I say I loved it? I've had to update my favourite anime list on my profile to add FMA in second place. I feel like saying "why didn't anyone tell me it was this good?!" but really, they did. Of course, people also told me Naruto was worth watching, and they were wrong with that one! God, that was an awesome show! Now all that's left is the movie. Good thing I picked it up at half price the other day ;)

Look at all those WMM effects. I was so hardkore.
Does anyone have any good Cardcaptor Sakura or Tsubasa Reservoir chronicles videos to share? I'm feeling bored XD
