JOURNAL: Tom the Fish (Tom the Fish)

  • i probably don't like you 2003-07-18 10:09:05 Had a small get-together before walking over to see Versus at the Brattle. I showed my friends my entires for the AWA pro and masters. The reaction to the masters was... interesting. But it's supposed to be. The pro entry was enjoyed by all. Easily two of my best videos, one a crowd pleaser, one a crowd annoyer. Heh.

My health is making me miserable. My diet consists of sourdough bread and rice and tea. And this is what it's going to be for the rest of my life. And the weather here is killing me. I'm going to have to be somewhere less humid next year at this time.

I'm still curious why my videos have won quite a few contests, but my star ratings hover around the 3 mark. Ah, well. One thing I've learned from the internet is it turns people into assholes once their anoniminity is confirmed. I long for the days all we had was e-mail and usenet.
  • go expos 2003-07-09 19:07:42 Whale Rider, having the distinction of worst title since Hope Floats, is the best movie I've seen this year. That isn't saying much, but really, it is an excellent, excellent film. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance fame worked on the soundtrack as well. See it, foo'! Or don't. What do I care?
  • Every band you like sucks 2003-07-07 22:02:53 Wow. Fin Fang Foom is the best band I've heard in years. YEARS! I haven't been this excited by a band since Rodan came along.

Got The Cat Returns R2 over the weekend. When I first saw it, it was in Cantonese, which I don't speak, so I didn't get all of it. Now that I've understood it, I have to say it's a very worthy addition to the ranks of Studio Ghibli. Also included on the disc was Ghiblis 2, which wasn't shown in the Hong Kong theatres, but was in the Japanese theatres. Wow. For a 25 minute short, it runs everything Ghibli is famous for. Comedy, pathos, reflection and risk-taking. Well, there was no action, so I guess not EVERYthing.

Finished my latest trailer parody. Rocky Ball 3. The last half-dozen vids I've made have been fun/comedy. Stuck in a rut, stuck in a rut. I'm feeling much more ready to take risks however. Nothing that will win me fans in the AMV world, I'm afraid, but I've shown some initial work to my culture jamming friends and impressed them.
  • yeah, yeah 2003-07-04 09:52:03 I wonder if I should take the hint from my low star ratings and just quit.

I swear I hate every self-important last one of you.
  • shake yr booty (_(_) (_)_) (_(_) 2003-07-02 09:34:56 There's a difference between being honest and being an asshole.

I've learned that I have some healthj problems. I have to alter my diet drasticly and I also have to move to a less humid climate. The diet is going to be a little hard, but I've been a vegetarian before and only quit a few months ago, so I don't mind going back, but no dairy, no fried foods, no alcohol, no fresh fruits and very little fresh vegtables, not too mention avoiding fat and fat-substitues pretty much leaves me with rice and pasta for the rest of my life.Luckily, gorwing up with an italian grandmother makes the pasta side a little easier, but 60% of the recepies I know require dairy. I can cheat a little, but not much. If I liked fish, this would be so much easier, but I can't stand any sort of seafood. In all honesty, the hardest part is going to be the drinking. My friend is a bartender and can make great drinks. Oh well. Boo hoo for me. It could be worse.

I've made a few pen(e-mail?) friends in Japan, and not a one of them like anime. They must think I'm a huge dork. Well, I am a huge dork, but they must think I'm a huge, foriegn dork. Luckily they all like baseball, so we have another thing to discuss, but they're all Yankee fans thanks to Matsui. Luckily, they all follow the Mariners as well. Two also like Nomo, so we can talk about his no-hitter he pitched for the Sox.

What's also weird is not one of them has bit in my attempt to discuss Takashi Kitano. Makes me wonder if he's as popular over there as I thought. It's weird to be so far away I have no idea what the popular culture is like. Just because it does get to my local movie theatre doesn't mean it's popular where it was made, I guess. They are all quite familar with the America blockbusters tho.

I should start up another video soon. I've been bored. Postal 2 kicks ass, but I finished it awful quick. It's great to hook up the cheats and fight Gary Coleman with bouncing cats nonetheless.
