JOURNAL: Tom the Fish (Tom the Fish)

  • Otakon 2003-08-10 20:14:01 Back.

A good time, a bad time. Saw some good stuff, bought some new cels, got some new toys, kept my spending in the three-digit range (barely), mostly because I'll be in Tokyo in 2 months and hopefully can get the stuff at cost there.

Got a sketch of Lime from Toshihiro Kawamoto, which was supercool, since my wife was dressed as Lime.

Unfortunatly, my health was a major problem this weekend, so my wife and I kept to ourselves. I just couldn't bear being social this weekend. I walked in and out of the AMV panel as I had another attack right then. Luckily, I was fine the night before for the MAT3K and AMV contest. Every video was enjoyable, but I still say Trythil's Always is the vid of the year. I was suprised that Lonely Driver didn;t have anything in the finals, because everything I've seen by him is gold. There were some mean people sitting behind me and booed and hissed a few videos, but my wife told them to be nice and they shut up after that.

A real watching the live action GTOs. I caught two episodes in Hong Kong, but since I can't understand Cantonese, I didn't understand them well. If anyone can hook my up with a copy of the fansubs, I'd be grateful.

Major highlight: Finding the Hero 12" action figures (dolls)
Major lowlight: Dumasses who think they're on par with MST3K and comment on every little thing in a movie (guy gets stabbed, dumass sez "That's got to hurt". Wow, with a wit like that, you're destined to die alone). Oh, and the people who insist on taking pictures in crowded walkways. I gave up being patient Saturday night and started walking thru the pictures. Head on over out of the way, then take the picture.
  • DVD or MPEG2 versions? 2003-08-05 15:25:53 If you want a DVD or MPEG2 version of some of my AMVs and you're attending Otakon, contact me and we'll set somehthing up.
  • escape tp the cape 2003-08-04 15:54:28 Had a terrific weekend at the cape with my friends. Only one attack, and it wasn't as vicious as the attacks I had in HK. Would have perfered to have no attacks, but the humidity just wouldn't allow for it. I got a plush lobster as well. He's super-cute!

I've found that tho everyone complains that there's no originality in AMVs, they really don't want it. WHen I use a popular song and/or anime, it gets plenty of hits and downloads, but when I do a less mainstream song and/or anime, it's pretty ignored. So my rule, do the hell what I want. I'm also starting to wish people would leave their opinions to themselves if they have nothing useful to contribute. The last few opinions were just baffling scores with one line saying "go0d combo" "bad combo!1!" type crap. I wish there was a way to just turn off opinions. I've not submitted my last 3 vids to the org database out of frustration.

Looking forward to Otakon. I'm proabably going to keep to myself over the weekend with the mood I've been in. It kind of makes me wish that my friends were into anime, but since I can't stand anime fans, or Otaku as they like to call themselves, it's probably for the best. Irregardless, I'm looking forward to meeting Tsukasa Kotobuki and Yoshiaki Iwasaki, even if just for autographs, and also to MAT3K and getting a reaction to Mokushi des ne.
  • where you going with that dogma in your head 2003-07-29 23:58:14 I just finished reading Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. It's the first masterpiece I've read sinceCarolyn Chute's Merry Men. It's a timely and timeless tale of a young girl growing up in Iraq in the late 70s and early 80s, during the second overthrow of the Shah and the Iraq/Iran war.

  • get yr ugly children away from me 2003-07-28 09:30:48 Well, got teo good pieces of info over the weekend. I got my lucky 13th award at YasumiCon and Mokushi made the Otakon finals. Got a busy August now. A plane flight every weekend until the weekend after labor day. Only one of them is a business trip, however, so who's complaining...

Got some amzing CDs this weekend, including 1 Mile High, Iron & Wine and Manitoba. It's getting harder for me to find good new music since I've pretty much left my old friends in the way, but it's still out there if I look.
