Regarding subtitles. You know, there is this great thing called letterboxing that is easy to do and also keeps your footage looking nice. If you are concerned with cropping causing aspect ratio issues, just make sure you crop either side the same amount that you crop the bottom (or the sum of pixels on both sides = pixels you crop off the bottom). Then it won't look weird. It really does make a difference in the video, and shows that you actually care enough about your hard work to make it look it's best. Kinda like removing tags, wrinkles and lint from your clothes before you wear them.
Just my 2 cents. I learned to remove them or work around them myself...
