JOURNAL: trythil (💩 💩)

  • phew 2002-08-19 20:47:02 Well, a long time later, this thing is back with KDE 3.0.3, XFree86 4.2.0, and Qt 3.0.5. Latest and greatest.

    And it works again.

Actually, I didn't have to re-compile all that -- it was a few null bytes in the authority file (bah...) screwing everything up. It's not a total waste of time, though -- there were new features in all three of those packages that I wanted, anyway...

Back to code, edit, and other crap.
  • To Kai Stromler 2002-08-19 11:41:38 One more thing:

    About "first AMV to Kanon":

You, however, can probably claim the first GOOD AMV to Kanon, though. :)

  • #*&($@@&(@%(*&%(&*%@(&*!!!!!!!!! 2002-08-19 11:17:26 Alright, so I start up X to check mail, do a little mindless web-browsing, and crank out some more code on my Cinelerra hacks. I was using KDE.

The piece of shit immediately crashes back to the command prompt, with a deluge of errors about being unable to establish an ICE connection. (For those who don't know, it's a connection authentication thing.)

GAH. So I try a few things, most notably fiddling with AGP settings.
Goddamnit. I make the problem worse. ARGH!

My system is now re-compiling XFree86 4.2, Qt 3.0.5, and the new KDE 3.0.3. This is gonna take at least half a day (my Athlon/850 ain't exactly spit-fire-quick), and I don't even know if this is gonna fix my woes so I CAN JUST USE MY FAVORITE FUCKING WEB BROWSER, which just happens to be Konqueror. Links in text and graphics mode runs fine, but really -- there are just some things that it can't handle.

*sigh* I like GNU/Linux and other Free/Open Source software systems because they let you do pretty much anything you want, and the tools, despite my ranting, are really quite high-quality.

The problem is that no tool is ever 100% reliable, and when some OSS tools start breaking down, they REALLY break down. (Note "some", not "all". Most aren't like that, but the XFree86 windowing system is...well, an unfortunate exception.) This is one place where I like Windows.

Unfortunately, with Windows, if the GUI subsystem faults (which is horrifically often), you're screwed. At least on GNU/Linux you can still do something with the box.

    To summarize:
    Computers suck.

Or at least ones based around the Intel x86 architecture do.

165 hits, 118 downloads, 3 opinions. Either people really are stunned by that "Family Matters" video, or they think it sucks so bad that it's not worthy of even a cursory review. Probably the latter.

    ---

In my latest project there were some pieces that had rather messy dissolves (@1:06, for anybody who might actually have any interest in watching that mess). I blamed them on the telecine algorithm, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore...

I'm using video that has been inverse telecined for my Wings of Honneamise project. I get the same problems! I'm pretty sure that it's not an interlacing problem...

Bleh. Will have to investigate further.
