Aww, c'mon! and the imminent premiere of my first AMV
2002-10-15 03:56:42
Well, I was more than a little surprised to find the forums shut down yesterday. Surprised because I've seen so much worse elsewhere.
Granted, there were problems, and I hope they can be worked out, but this seems a little extreme, from my point of view.
Perhaps I best expressed myself in the email I sent Phade regarding the shutdown. Since I expect no reply, and would not post it publically if I did, I'll share my words, as I am unashamed of them:
******************
I’m sure you’re pissed off and being flooded with mail. I’ll keep this short.
I believe the Forums are a very valuable part of the org, and would like to see them stay.
Shutting them down completely has the same effect as ALL the valued members leaving.
People will always step on each other’s toes, it’s simply human nature.
A few crappy suggestions from a guy who helps moderate a little pissant forum with only a few hundred members: *cough: me*
Trash the offtopic forums completely. That should remove a lot of dead weight, and save a lot of bandwidth.
Moderate the remainder quite a bit more strictly, bring the lock more frequently, and warn, then ban, (Temp or permanently) problem posters. (More mods wouldn’t hurt)
Do away with post counts, if possible.
Forums I value most:
AMV Announcements
Technical Q & A
Conventions/Contests
General (got to have one, I guess)
Thanks for all you do for the AMV community; sorry you have to deal with crap like this.
I’ve tried to be more of an asset than a liability here, my apologies if I haven’t.
Regards,
FurryCurry

The one sentence that really sums up my position is
"Shutting them down completely has the same effect as ALL the valued members leaving."
There HAS to be a better solution than a shutdown. Grow some thicker skin, folks! :-/
In other news, I dragged my lazy behind into this chair, and finally did a writeup/database entry for my recently completed AMV, and prepped my website with a download page and the file.
Hopefully all goes well and it premieres this weekend at SugoiCon, after which I will promptly provide the download link. Hopefully I'll get to meet a few AMV'ers there. greyplague is running the contest, and Misty Caldwell is supposed to be there at least one day. I better get my badge ready and print it.
See ya when I see ya, folks.
