No work on the video last night; I was feeling weirdly run-down and not up to anything, but this does take a bit of the pressure off: the current project is now definitely going to be the last before Germany.

My gear is probably going to be in today: it was on the dock in the next town over at 7, so it's hard to see how it could get pushed off till Monday. And just in time: I've gotten 13 of the 15 DVDs I was planning on ripping for Germany already clogging my internal drives, plus a bunch more DVDs ripped on general principle just hanging about; have to see how the actual space equation works out with regards everything else. I may even have room for some other stuff, but I do want to be sure that I have some scratch space for huffyuv source. Without that, I'd have to bait-and-switch, and getting away from that was one of the biggest benefits of moving to Magix.

Unfortuntately, the stats of the system I'd be using my themselves put the kibosh on that one. I guess we'll find out for real if the Pentium M can go hardcore...or all about adapting equipment for European voltages. (adapter->powerstrip->device sounds moderately safe)

    Eight days and counting......

Cuts re-sourced are now up to 49/78, which is good progress, despite some schitzophrenic filter tweaking. Some scenes need to get de-greened, and on some de-greening just pushes the red towards green, which is kind of the opposite effect from what I wanted. MORE RED. MORE BLOOD. MORE SEVERANCE. As far as progress goes, it's looking pretty good, and I may be able to get through the two remaining segments tonight, especially as the last VOB is short anyways and including credits. Then it's editing on Saturday (or Sunday, there may be some other commitments), and i can flip a coin and decide whether I want to do another scratch project before leaving next weekend.

My gear shipped from New Jersey last night, and while it's not scheduled in till Monday, it's entirely possible that it could be in tomorrow. If that's the case, I start transferring stuff over to the drive and setting up for Germany; it's only 120GB instead of the 160GB I was planning, but that should be plenty to pack on the first season of Initial D, Tsukihime, Requiem From The Darkness (as much as I have), Dogtato-kun, and the digisub version of Argent Soma (I do have the DVDs, but this version is being used for a reason), plus appropriate music, editing tools, and utilities. Ground up, that's six or seven videos plus a full-length parody, which should be sufficient to scratch editing itches over 9 to 12 months while working full-time and spending weekends outside in Central Europe as much as possible.

Of course, editing is less likely than other methods of passing free time to get you deported, but if you're not threatening your immigration status periodically, you're not having enough fun.

I managed to get through the first VOB last night, a slow and creaking process as is any frameserver operation. Manga did a really rotten job on this movie, and the interlacing is not completely removed. However, it's looking pretty good, if not quite up to the standard of what I had captured into MPEG1 (at least as regards color fidelity and lack of ringing/rainbows, blocking is much better) nearly four years ago. Working with dirty DVDs is good for the soul, but it sucks for expedient production.

Another interesting progress measure is number of clips re-sourced, which is up to 27/76 right now. When all 76 cuts used originally have been recovered, I can technically make the video again. However, if that was all there was to it, I'd be done by now; I'm also cutting new source to fix some parts that went suboptimal, and to replace a few cuts that I wasn't happy with in the original. I dug out my old prod notes, and now have not only the full timing chart for the song, but also the full "paper project file", from back when I was still noting markouts for every cut. Of course, I'm going to be doing a new, new-style one with new syntax for this video when it's actually produced, but having the old one in place makes tracking remake progress that much easier.

As yet, it's uncertain whether or not this video will get a new catalog number. It's probably not going to be a straight remaster, but by normal standards I'd have to have more than 10% of the cuts in the final version as new or replaced. I'm not sure that's going to happen. It's that difficult balance between having confidence in my editing abilities a month into my career, and recognizing the limitations of the source and software that I was working with, and how that forced me to make compromises with what I wanted to do.

I also reviewed a bunch of vids for the recs list, but there were enough holes in the coverage that the list itself is probably not going to get updated until Friday. Some good ones (I'd nearly forgotten about Puya, one of the few nu-metal bands that, like the Deftones, managed to survive the collapse of their form by having actual talent and originality), but a lot of pure shite...hope that improves with the coming block.

  • we'll catch him at night 2005-04-12 15:13:08
I was recovering from a bout of dehydration last night (wool shirts and plate-glass windows don't mix) and did not work on the video last night; tonight will be different. I did however grade out I and K, and actually uploaded the updates to the recs list this morning.

I'm moving closer towards actually buying the gear for Germany, but there's so much other stuff that has to be brought into line that it may slip. Even with FedEx I shouldn't put it much past tomorrow. Damn medical conditions.

And then I have to fill out for a work pass for Singapore....not going there any time soon, but in this line of work it pays to be prepared. More photocopying of diplomas.....people complaining about the stringency of our immigration standards should try applying to live somewhere else sometime.

I got all the sources ripped, somewhere in between watching the last volume of Tsukihime (PILU is going to be hard, but possible), a lot of Dogtato-kun, and the defeat of Piccolo leading into the 23rd Budokai. I was also grading D through H, writing up one of three owed reviews, and in to work on Saturday to fix stuff....leaving alone preparations for Germany. I may take some time off at the end of next week to make sure I've got everything squared away -- multiplexing it with work is hard stuff.

The precleaning progress reflects nearly an hour spent banging on VDub filters last night; I think I have it almost correct, and the final tuning for color will probably be in Magix rather than on the pre end. It looks decent now, much better than the DVDs, but I'm concerned with a loss of detail in some places. Maa ii. It only matters in the scenes that were used in #5 originally, which I still need to process into a scratch track. I haven't even gotten my bloody notes out yet from that one.

So far, 77 videos reviewed on the second pass, and more added every day. That metal is somehow endangered on the .org, rather than just marginal, is a bizarre fiction.
