your turn to go
2005-05-06 04:09:40
#44 has now been changed over to local, following #2 and #13 yesterday. I now have a good bit of operating room on my UM space, even though I'm probably going to have to move it all imminently to some other server (gotta find something cheap and worthy) -- I've been gone for more than a whole semester now, and this deal can't last forever.
I'm officially homeless right now and will stay that way until I sign another lease. If it's today, I'll be updating the "blog" (I hate writing that, but it's the shortest way to say it); if not, I'll be working on SH099 nights, trying to get exhausted enough to go to sleep on the office floor. Something productive will happen. At any rate, it's a learning experience for everyone concerned, and those usually involve at least a little pain.
offtopic:
In the news this morning was an item that the Kansas school textbook review board is making noises about teaching alternative theories of the origin of life. As an American in Europe, this makes me want to put a paper bag over my head. Honestly, how retarded can you get? We've observed population-level shifts in morphology attributable to natural selection, and we've observed speciation: the current theory of evolution (which is not exactly the way Darwin proposed it ~150 years ago) is the one that the observable facts support. In the sciences, we should teach people the facts and the method to draw inferences from those facts, and the facts support the view that species gradually give rise to other species based on genetic drift and environmental pressures. Anything else is just punting the question.
"Humanity is | a part of nature | a species that evolved | among the others" -- that there is the uncomfortable truth that they're trying to run away from, and also some lyrics from an excellent band. The radio stations here in the East are pretty awful, so as soon as I can get a permanent address again, I'm going to have to order The Fifth Sun's CDs. Driving through the Staus on 97 with Top 40 on the radio gets really frustrating; if I'm going to be spending half an hour on a 10/15 km commute, I might as well have some decent music on.

and soon the world will cease to be
2005-05-05 05:32:04
Put some older videos on local instead of direct, in order to save diskspace for the "blog" (sword I hate that bloody word) I've started up about my stay in Germany. I'm still behind right now; the good tourist pictures won't be up for another day or so, but there's a bunch of junk on there now including commentary.
We're still battling with the relocation people and the crazy landlord (3 months' rent in advance wtf........), but for now I'm not homeless, and will stay that way till about tomorrow morning. After that it gets dicey. My car has a fair amount of space in the back, though, and the office is in a pretty low-crime area. Something'll work out, eventually.
Work is going to be thick for a while as well, but I swear that I'll have some actual new-video progress notes in here eventually. I mean it.

life burns from the touch of the reaper

If you're in Saxony and can spare a couple hundred euro or a place to sleep, let me know. Miscommunication and HR incompetence are driving me crazy; I need about 1800e by 10:00 tomorrow and can reliably get ahold of probably about 600-800. If there's something we need to know, like "your bank will let you take out only 200e per day and you're going to need about 2000 to put a roof over your head", that should be clearly communicated. Oh well. I've slept in worse places than this office.
Obviously, video work is taking a little lower priority. If I can get my feet on the ground and beat the expense/billing circuit into submission with the Customer Appreciation Bat, then I can get cracking. Right now it's like that plane my brother was in a few years back: four miles up and no hydraulics, trying to think of some way to land, or even just check that the gears have been cranked all the way out. He came out of that one alive, and somehow or another I'll manage this.

fight for a living
2005-05-03 09:37:56
I was idly reading the forums and saw someone post a "long list" of CDs and anime that they own, looking for idea compliations. In toto, it was about one screen long. If I was back in my normal locale and tried to post something like that, it'd stretch all the way back here to Germany. Last I checked I had about 500 CDs exclusive of several hundred to several thousand songs not backed by physical media, and in the neighborhood of 400 volumes of anime DVDs and VHS, leaving aside the 600+ burned CDs, many of which would be sourcable. Back by my old desk, virtually any idea I had was sourceable and could become an instant project. Here on the road, it's less so; I've got eight projects solid, and that's it: after they're through I have to kill-and-acquire, especially for video source.
Fortunately, things are a little different in Germany with regards source availability. Gunslinger Girl is out here through volume 3, though the release hasn't even started in the US yet; I'm thinking of remaking the official video for Farin Urlaub's "Dusche" to this one, but as expressed above that will entail buying the single as well as the DVDs.....at moderately inflated prices. It's about 25 E per volume here, which translates to like a million dollars American (not true, it's about $30 and includes the hardcore tax rate); vielleicht waere ess besser online.
This idea is pretty much freely available to anyone who's got either of the source components; I'm also mulling over a Fler video since I'm going to be buying NDW 2005 as soon as I can find it anyways, but I don't have a firm idea on the video -- if only Worst was animated.................
I should be moving into my apartment soon and thus maybe working on SH099 over the weekend, even on this impaired machine. Fortunately, it's not effects-demanding, and I do have quality-keeper measures in place -- the time-to-lockup on this machine is absurdly low. SH100 is going to be a little different from any video I've ever done, and a little like all of them -- what the hell that means will be revealed probably in another two months.

#94 did not win at AniBo, but will be debuting online today....provided that the uploads eventually finish. All my bandwidth is being routed through the company servers back in the US, and is ofcourse getting throttled something hardcore with that transatlantic bounce. It might almost be faster to use dialup....but then I'd have to get a phone line activated and get HR to set me up for dialup capability, and in both instances there is going to be unnecessary bureaucratic dreck that will make it extremely difficult to handle in with everything else I have to do.
The machine is going okay; I'm not doing much besides work, but I can't talk too much about that for confidentiality reasons. So geht's; there's a lot of other junk about Germany that's not germane here, but the page for that ain't done yet. Always later, never today.
