While I wait for Magi to get back online, I run down my battery by indexing Tsukihime for the video. The song, and pertinent details about it, will be withheld, but there's no reason to do that for the anime. The print looks pretty good, and will require minimal filtering. It's not as clear as on SH102, but nothing really is -- that show's release is fucking incredible.

I'm going to do the prep for AWA tonight and mail it tomorrow, though it'll mean getting up a little earlier than today -- but hopefully I will get home less late than 3:30 AM, which was the deal last night. Not hugely fun.

But on the other hand, I put in for my Summer Breeze ticket today, and Nevermore's Euro tour is going to be packing Dew-Scented and Mercenary in support. I can't believe that I, like so many people, thought thrash metal was dead in the late '90s -- and I sure hope they add a date in Leipzig, or even Berlin. Tours like this are ample compensation for long stays overseas.

Source for SH103 has been loaded up, and I'm probably going to start precleaning it tomorrow while dodging screaming fits from people who don't understand what causes or does not cause CPU overload. (work is a little crazy right now.) I also have a fair idea on what I'm going to be doing for SH104, which will be a refreshing break from what I've been doing, and in itself make the long, battering work that SH105 and SH106 will inevitably require be a refreshing change of pace as well.

I tried my best to submit for Connichi, but them not liking FTP as a primary submission method (instead prefering IM-stuffs), combined with my work schedule (and certain computer buggery issues) did not produce a good end result. I'll try sending across my internet version so they can decide if they even think they can show the real deal, but otherwise, it's just AWA -- and coming in closer to when my shift's actually supposed to start Friday in order to mail it off, superhyperairmailspeed. Bleh.

At the end of the throughput tunnel: Wacken! Hopefully, SH103 will be done by then as well, so I can leave it out as a prank and come back to check the reactions after four days rocking to, in, and from S-H.

I've pretty much decided on SH103, which I may or may not reveal while in progress -- probably not, as the potential black comedy factor is too severe and I want to take people by surprise. SH102 is producing to Connichi spec right now; hopefully I'll be able to submit it before the deadline, but this is now in the hands of the convention organizers rather than mine. I'm probably going to just burn a DVD with the Lagarith version for AWA and drop them the codec; they're requiring 4 blanks, and it just so happens that I have a 5-pack of DVDs lying around completely spare. The reason is pretty basic; I'm exporting for Connichi at 15Mbps MPEG2 because anything else would look like ass, and they're obviously going to have to reencode that for the AWA DVDs. Better just to let them run the original through TMPEG themselves.

I'm probably going to start prework on #103 tomorrow night -- it's a difficult situation, having to offload everything that went into #102, then import all the vobs from the external drive. If I only had one more adapter -- but "if only" doesn't get video edited.

AviSynth is being a dumb twit, and I'm having problems exporting SH102, but all signs point to it still being ready for Connichi tomorrow. The editing is done, and I've done their mixdown version, which for the first time in a while doesn't look that great. I put that down to "high level of detail", "six-minute video", and "72 strobe cuts". This is not a video that seeks to entertain its viewers so much as beat them into submission, which is of dubious desirability. We'll see if Connichi dares show it (provided I get it in on time or can wrangle a latecomers exception), and how many people puke on their notes when it comes up on AWA Pro.

I'm undecided on what I want to do for SH103. There are several videos in the queue, but two of them are both long and serious, and I'm not sure I want to swing that so soon on the heels of this one, which was a difficult battle and did not involve nearly as much source cleanup as those coming two are going to take. That leaves the black-comedy one that I planned in the states in the immediate queue, and then an explication of one of my AMV Hell tracks. I'd like to do something shorter and fun after wallowing in darkness and weirdness on the AMV front basically since I've come to Germany (SH100 doesn't count), but I'm not sure that there's anything I do that is not dark and/or weird, especially since the start of this year.

I've always been a little obscure, but with the possible exception of SH095 I don't think I've made a video in the last year that could be described as "accessible", not since #89 wrapped. #90 can't be distributed, #91 was all Distribution stuff that nobody had ever heard of, #92 and #93 were fucked up, the three live-action videos were either totally bizarre or built from source nobody had hever heard of, #94 was obscure, #96 was deliberately alienating, #97 was a remake of a video that nobody liked in the original, #98 had basically local appeal only, #100 was pure navel-gazing, and #99 and #101 were deliberately inaccessible from the get-go. And there's little that could be described as such in the current queue.

At one level, I don't care. I'm going where I want to go with AMV, and if that path leads me into a bizarre dead end like Varg's post-incarceration projects under the name of Burzum where I'm the only person who can understand what I'm trying to do, so be it. But at another level I keep thinking that I got into this hobby not only to confuse and disgust but to evangelize heavy metal, and it's difficult to do that to people who are backing away in fear and confusion. It's a difficult situation, but not one that I should be putting much time and effort into resolving. I've got the recs list -- as soon as I get it back online, fucking host and their lame nameservers -- to pump up real metal, and I can continue following my own bizarre perennial quest off into those realms where dark and light don't differ.

I should do another real black metal video sometime -- provided that I can find and correctly mutilate the right source. I've got _Filosofem_ here, so audio isn't the problem -- integrating it correctly with something matching the spirit is. The weird and obscure is calling......

I was messing around with the audio last night, and realized that for the timing to work properly, I'm going to need an intro using another song, and accordingly, the videos is probably going to run nearly six minutes -- well within AWA's limits but completely overrunning Connichi, who I will be able to submit it to over the internet. Of course, this means that I have to make absolutely sure that it doesn't suck.

I got my Wacken ticket last night, and was beyond overjoyed. Sometimes I wonder if I'm building this up too much, but with so many good bands, and the experience I have at camping in rotten conditions, there's more or less no way that I could honestly be disappointed with this festival. Maybe it won't be good enough that I'd make a point of coming back yearly (despite the fact that this will probably involve international flight time), but that's as far as it'll go.

For the weekend: SH102. Some of the other guys are going to Prague, but I'd rather go with Meg later; not only will she keep me out of trouble, but they're all 10-20 years older than I am. I need to hang out with more people my own age -- hence the festivals. And possibly Connichi, though they will likely want me at work some during September given that I'm taking such huge chunks of August off.
