JOURNAL: Kai Stromler (Kai Stromler)

  • walls of stone around me 2006-03-10 08:46:30 yep....still alive.

I made it back to the US, despite staunch efforts from various airlines to the contrary, and have almost gotten through my first week back. I'm probably going car shopping this weekend -- not enough time to hunt apartments, maybe next weekend or the one after -- but also have all those owed ops on the slate. It shouldn't be that difficult; five ops, half an hour to do each, but as with anything else, it's actually doing this that's the difficult part.

I'm also going to put the finishing touches on #105 and get that in mail-ready form for AniBo, whose deadline creeps ever nearer. It's probably going to be from just burning a properly structured data file; I don't want to mess around with actually authoring for-real DVDs just yet.

In parallel to this, I'm also working on thinning out what I'm going to have to move; I have a huge collection of digital anime junk, spread out over about 600 CDs, burned over a period of about 6 years. There are a lot in full-sized cases, even though the bulk of the later additions to the library are in slimlines. Copying these off, restructuring stuff, and burning DVDs guarantees a sixfold reduction in space, with the possibility of saving at a factor of 14; very old CDs with a 650 MB cap and headroom under that in full-size cases are a major factor in this collection, and I can fit seven of those, now, into half the space that one of them currently occupies. 100 slimline cases is nothing to shake a stick at, either, but I've got several boxes full entirely of burned CDs, and the more I can do to get that down to "one box of burned DVDs", the better.

It's currently a little difficult because of drivespace issues, but once I get done with the current videos and move production back to my desktop rig, I can concentrate on doing transfer with the additional 20GB that will be then freed. The eventual goal is to put a DVD burner into the other computer as well (to go with the new 300GB drive) and just do everything from there, but I have this rig now with the burner now, and good discipline and a well-managed external drive will do fine in the time available.

Getting some good feedback on the beta of #105 so far, which will probably lead to a couple tweaks put in over the weekend. Right now, I'm fighting a bizarre problem at work and have to finish cleaning up my apartment -- I'm moving out next Monday, for values of 'moving out' to include 'leaving due to expired lease'. I also have to write up a couple ops; intelligent critiques of your videos don't come free, and I have several people to pay back.

SH105 is finished, subject to minor tweaks possibly to be done later, and SH106 is not started at all; I may be working on that this week Beta call for #105 will go out later today in the forums, and that's the last anyone will see of it until AniBo.

This is either nifty and poetic or stupidly misspelled. It's sometimes difficult to tell which in this modern age, but unfortunately, given the context of our dear banner "contest", it's probably the latter.

I still haven't cleaned up #105, but once I do, I will be advertising for betatesters,a couple in the 25+ age range and at least one in the 15-25 range that represents the actual AMV audience. That'll probably go down tonight, as I've made up the sleep debt from Belgium and probably won't be unexpectedly called in to the fab.

Flying out for Belgium in a couple hours; #105 is more or less done, though I need to do some touchups before I've got a final version that I'm happy with. I screwed up the first half of the video with some bad Smart Deinterlace settings, so I have to reencode that, and there are some other places that need cleaning up.

Despite this, I'm fairly happy with the video conceptually. I think that where #103 tries, this *succeeds*, though other people will have to watch it and get the point for it to really succeed. I actually had a script for this one (admittedly one written after I'd gotten a full minute into the editing), and I think that helped immensely, looking at the problem more as a filmmaker than as a musician. Of course, I may not be satisfied once I plan the full touchups, but that's just an occupational hazard.

This one will be fixed up later today, once I get settled in Leuven; tomorrow is going to be all work, and then Wednesday I get home. There may be some time for #106 in there, but I don't see enough to edit the seven minutes that I'm looking at right now.
