JOURNAL: Kai Stromler (Kai Stromler)

It's not just that an update was requested, but also that I'm kind of shaking the rust off; I'm kind of working on something that may turn into a short project, but progress is slow and slowed further by everything else going on in my life. As an indicator of why I haven't been doing more lately, it should be noted that in the 2 months since the last update, I spent about 2 weeks spread across one non-usual US state and two foreign countries, and saw a total of 47 sets at various concerts. Unfortunately, I was not able to combine the two, even though I was fairly sure I saw posters for a Black Hole gig around the field office in Seoul.

Currently, for June, there are another 10 shows (about 40 total bands, give or take) lined up, absent more international travel, and sometime in there my brother and I are jumping in our youngest, who turned 21 this past week, and I have to inevitably turn 27. Hopefully, I'll also have another video out by the end of the month and be ready to do some more ambitious stuff (still/already on the drawing board) after that; I'm not quite dead yet, not quite finished, but the clipping process is a hell of a lot less fun than going to shows, and writing brings more together much quicker than the compositive process. To a certain degree it's like learning to walk all over again, after this much of a layoff, and that's exactly as entertaining as it sounds.

  • the light shall flicker out 2007-03-31 12:31:51 So I did finish my conet track, right before the deadline, and hopefully there won't be any problems with the upload. I'm not sure that I'll do another video, but I'm not sure that I won't, either; I've got a few ideas I'm kicking around, but I've got a few vids to do as 'service' for various local bands before that. Even so, it's been a nice run, and the existing videos aren't going anywhere.

Oddly, #109 has gotten a fairly good response since its posting, and I was actually able to do more clipping over the weekend. I'm still about 1 GB out from where I want to be, but I have half the raw source left to cut through, so this shoudl not be a problem. Of course, I have to shake up the song and see what I want to do with it, then pick some random shows/episodes to use as 'salt' sources, but there's only one show (and no football games) next weekend, and I should be able to finish in that time frame.

  • they wail and weep 2007-01-19 08:50:02
After about 1 hour of work last night, I have my conceptual and effects design done, plus about half my source cut. I stupidly started everything in uncompressed instead of HuffYUV or Lagarith, so I'm going to be pushing more space around, but I have the space available or can easily free it. The track in question is about 2 minutes long, so I probably almost have coverage now, and if I go out to 6 GB, it should be complete overage and enough room to tinker with speed, slicing, etc.

I'm really amped about the effects design on this one; the filter chain is fairly short, but it completely destroys the line and color integrity of the source, leaving nothing but a bad impression of it. I'm definitely going to use this chain on that huge final project, but as flavoring; here it's going to be dominant, with the aim of creating something that looks nothing at all like anything else in the project. It's not quite ASCII-character substitution, but that's played out to a certain extent; this is the kind of enturbulation that I wanted to do with old ideas on punchcarding, but without the need to actually write any filters.

Of course, this depends heavily on having the time to work on it this weekend. I have two shows to go to, two football games to watch, and a bucket of Chinese pork buns to cook up, plus a bunch of quests to cross off in WoW, but I'm fairly sure that I'll have time in there to at least get the clipping done, with editing to follow hopefully sometime before Metal Winter Break. Somehow, I'll get this one tied of..

I set up the source for my numberstation track last night, and the filters are all in place. I just need to track in on some effects clips, and I'll be sure that I have everything that I need. Based on some stuff from work, I'm now hoping to do a significant share of clipping tonight, with editing to go in on Sunday before and after the football games. I've got two shows to get to this weekend, but nothing Sunday. It's a good thing that my process goes relatively fast, because otherwise I'd be kind of screwed on this one.

Since I'm going to be going into AMV mode, an encode of #109 relatively soon is not too much to hope for.
