drifting from the living, joining with the dead.......
2002-07-19 09:05:37
A nice relaxing rainy day after a fucking nuclear-blast-furnace heatwave and two associated power outages in two days (in the course of which I got an Ippo render broken -- not fun), plus everything is going fine on the video front. Read some Mishima yesterday; "Death in Midsummer" and two other stories I can't remember the titles of. An interesting guy to be sure. After I finish the Ippo video, the last one that has to be done for a convention deadline before December, I'll probably have time to start in on his main novel cycle, then try for some slightly more modern Japanese writers or finish the German Kurtzgeschichte anthology I started in on way back.
Current video: Game Over, "Little Mac's Confession" to Hajime no Ippo. Progress check: 46% complete. Expected catalog number: #44.
Con news: Unless he decides that none of my MPEG1 vids is worthy, I'm going to get a slot on RedWolf's AWA-distro compilation CD. I'm sending him everything from #1 to #13 (Except #11, that's MPEG2 and it's going to compete at NDK6 anyway); expect to probably see the Greenwood vid or the Kite video, though the more extreme metal ones aren't out of the question. Also fixed the entry for video #28 to reflect its entry at MTAC (another convention mysteriously not listed on this site); going to send that one out by Priority Mail today so it gets to Tennessee by next Friday. May see about entering AWA; I know I have videos lying around (though it'll mean double-dipping, most likely stuff that's already going to NDK or Nekocon), and I think I passed up MTAC on the first pass due to format issues that were ultimately an illusion.
Oh, and I lied last time about listings: it's AnimeFEST that's not listed, Anime USA is in the db. This is what happens when you use Shin Hatsubai Jitsu: you make so many good vids so fast that you forget which of the seven conventions you are entering in the next three months is which.

The footrace begins!
2002-07-18 11:19:28
Well, my habit of reading the "new journal" entries for whoever finally pays off; I get to see the competition coming. I have no doubt that ForeverSakura is a good guy, but the tale of the tape is that there's no way he's gonna get first on Game Over doing Little Mac's Confession, since there is no worthwhile AMV editing method faster than Shin Hatsubai Jitsu and I'm already almost 40% done with my take on the song to Hajime no Ippo. Dude, if you're reading this, I'd love to see your take with Grappler Baki via cd-trade or something. I'll send you mine in return, or if you're going to Anime USA (in Virginia, for some weird reason this con isn't listed on this site) you'll probably be able to catch it there.
Unfortunately, going into overdrive to finish this video (it'll probably be done by Monday) means that all the arranging I did for Grimlock's cover of "Zombie Town" on the Rapid Charlie tribute is going to get sat on for a while, but that's just as well seeing as I've only got half the guitar parts down. Rapid Charlie is a tough band to cover, because there's always that fine line between being faithful to the originals and just sucking. Kind of like old Mayhem in that respect.
Current video: Game Over, "Little Mac's Confession" to Hajime no Ippo. Progress check: 38% complete. Expected catalog number: #44.
Grimlock news: As soon as the band gets a page at mp3.com, it'll be posted here. As above, Grimlock is kind of on brief hiatus until the current video wraps because I can't walk away from the possibility of a challenge. I guess I'm just a competitive bastard like that. Gomen, Steve, but this video has been in the SH queue since demo #3 was mapped out in the first week of May.
Totally unrelated: old Death is starting to grow on me. The _Symbolic_ album always sounds like the first time every time I hear it, but now old shit like "Zombie Ritual", "Pull The Plug" (damn ironic that this was their biggest hit), and "Mutilation" is just working in and in on me. If someone could point me at a good copy of _Scream Bloody Gore_ or _Leprosy_ I'd be most appreciative.

How To Contact Kai, etc, etc
2002-07-16 15:30:21
Well, despite not having root on my workstation or a home net connection, you can now request videos (anything in the Shin Hatsubai catalog except vids that are going to conventions in the future or video #34, because that one sucks) over Jabber, the IM software that does not try to 0wnz your b0x. Between 8AM and 4PM ET (GMT -5 for those not familiar with US timezones), you can try to find me as ildanach@jabber.org. I'm not exactly sure how this works (I just installed the client, dammmit), but go ahead and try. Most of the time, I won't have the video you want right at my fingertips, but I'll arrange with you to get it to you asap.
If it's outside those hours, on a weekend, or I'm offline for some reason hit me at merlane@hotmail.com (Jabber is a bit of a memhog and if I'm doing a long compile or something I may kill it), and I'll get back to you about sending the file. Jabber also has some IRC functionality, but I aint good with that.
If you don't have a Jabber client (and odds are you don't), try
http://winjab.sourceforge.net/
for the most stable Jabber client for Windows (no root permissions needed either) and links to the main Jabber sites, where you can easily find clients for other OSes. I am still working on that dedicated SH site, but even then, it's only going to be one VOTM per month or whatever, and because of that ridiculous metalhead urge to spread the wealth, I still need some way to get videos to people who want them.
Current video: Game Over, "Little Mac's Confession" to Hajime no Ippo. Progress check: 22% complete. Expected catalog number: #44.
Con news: added another video to the Ohayocon target slate to exploit a hole in their rules regarding language. Hopefully, it'll also get through the violence filter.

...no one there
2002-07-15 09:39:16
a productive weekend, but I got to sleep some too, which is always a plus. Chopped up four eps on Friday and finished up the IF/FMP video; that one's going to CNAnime. next is Ippo, but I couldn't work on that one over the weekend, so I did some prerendering and audio remixing for vids down the line, saw Reign of Fire (ok, but I'm not buying the DVD to do a vid to BG's "Welcome to Dying" like I thought I might), and cranked up the new Sentenced -- damn cool stuff, better than _Crimson_ and fortunately not back on the same (sucky) lines as _Frozen_ and _Down_.
Current video: Game Over, "Little Mac's Confession" to Hajime no Ippo. Progress check: 7% complete. Expected catalog number: #44.
Con news: sending out the vid pax for AFO, CNAnime, and AnimeFEST today. filled in the void on the schedule sheet for Ohayocon; it's more Sentenced and more Kenshin, showing what the worst ep in the series is good for. damn am I glad I got that single -- the album version just won't cut it. what song? jeez man, wait till January or when I finish the damn vid.
Grimlock news: why the fuck couldn't Guitar Center have sold me a pedal "batteries not included" instead of giving me on that had been sitting hooked up to the unit since it left the fucking factory? now I'm pissed and I still have to buy some fucking 9volts. working on a new guitar solo (lots of tapping, but some actual picking this time too) and thinking about doing a song on the proposed Rapid Charlie tribute. Probably "Zombie Town", since someone else is probably going to take "Italian Dracula", and My Pet Demon pretty much has "Catacomb" sewn up.
misc: fixed a lot of stuff on videos already up: two title corrections and added a bunch of anime titles to the demo #2 videos that I had forgotten I used. no flak; I've done too many of these suckers and there's no way I can remember all 31 animes I used in a demo six months ago. still hanging fire on that site/hosting thing.

Oss!
2002-07-12 16:32:26
I'm back, after a year's absence in which I somehow got another 32 videos together. The old Shin Hats page is no longer valid and should be removed -- provided I find the time and will to bug phade about it (as if he cares or has no other more important things to take care of).
Current video: In Flames, "Goliaths Disarm Their Davids" to Full Metal Panic. Progress check: 63% complete. Expected catalog number: #43.
Con news: nothing much. Going to enter at least 7 before the end of the year -- check dates on the videos that haven't premiered yet to see what's going where.
Grimlock news: _Tenebral Presence_ single is out, may be pressed. working on some guitar songs for a ~20min demo to send to labels. a video using Grimlock is in the queue.
misc: working on getting some hosting together to put up a site with more info and better indexing, or at least a VOTM. More info as it comes.
