JOURNAL: Kai Stromler (Kai Stromler)

  • for absent friends 2003-02-25 13:27:59
I'm currently hung up in the very last stage of the current video: rendering the final version. It won't go past the first clip and I have no friggin' clue why. The draft, though, is done, and did set records for both number of clips (232) and overall speed (1.24 spc).

The drawback is that, on the draft at least, there's something weird going on. It's like the timing's just a hair off, or something, because *I* watched this draft and went "huh??". That's not supposed to happen. As a creator you're supposed to be in control of your material, not at its mercy. Of course, the relationship between the draft and the final product is always uneasy.

Hopefully, I'll have the final video done tonight, so I can start work on that next one. This video's already eaten two weeks of my life, and I'm not really into giving it much more.

Current video: Dark Tranquillity, "Hours Passed In Exile" to Saishu-Heiki Kanojo. Progress check: 98%. The nearest deadline is a 4/29 postmark, so it's not like I'm really racing to finish this one, except for the inevitable domino effect. The next one won't have quite so many visual effects (this one is verging on overdone in that caption), but will in all likelihood be even more avant-garde.

Well, I got the reviews done, but not the video. I started drafting this morning, and the first two minutes look pretty killer so far. I'm also averaging about 1.24 seconds per clip, which is drastically faster than I've ever done before. At this point, it's reminding me a lot of #54, so it'll probably come out as SH rather than KK. Just the way things go.

I actually got all my first-choices from club Friday night, which contributed substantially to the tying-up of my weekend. I've still got two tapes and all 3 CDs to dupe, but they can wait. Must finish video....must get underway on next video....

Current video: Dark Tranquillity, "Hours Passed In Exile" to Saishu-Heiki Kanojo. Progress check: 90%. I hate leaving off in the middle of things, but time has conspired against me. I'll do another minute this afternoon, probably, then take care of the dogs, then finish up drafting, what few effects I need to run, and finalization tonight. I should be capturing source for #70 and entering this one in the catalog by this time tomorrow.

    Note:
When Great White's now-obviously-extinct career is being eulogized, they are referred to as a "hard rock" band. When they are under question of liability, they are called a "heavy metal" band. F.O.A.D., mainstream America. We don't need your shit around here.

  • a real life hell | you will find 2003-02-21 12:40:34
Ofcourse word is probably out by now, since it was all over the morning newscasts where I'm at, but there was a fire at The Station in Warwick, RI, last night, set off by Great White's pyro, and guitarist Ty Longley is missing-presumed-dead, along with 75 confirmed fatalities among the 250-300 attendees. Perhaps someday we'll make snide cracks about what you get for going to see certain bands, but when people die for stupid reasons, it aint time for joking around. I don't like Great White, but anybody who seriously wishes someone else burned alive should get the chance to see what that's like firsthand.

Circumstances didn't permit me to do any drafting last night, so the video isn't done yet. Instead, I've been plugging away on album reviews, having recently found Death's _Leprosy_, Sigh's _Scenario IV: Dread Dreams_, and Amon Amarth's new one _Versus The World_. I'll probably do the video up over the weekend, then get a good start on #70 with the goal of finishing it by next Friday, but I've still got plenty of stuff to review.

Current video: Dark Tranquillity, "Hours Passed In Exile" to Saishu-Heiki Kanojo. Progress check: 85%. Everything on this video is done except actually making it. I love my prod system.

Clipping is done; the last three eps rounded things out to about 11:35, which is well over the mark I was shooting for. So tonight I do the timing chart and probably draft if I have the time what with the dogs and such.

Also changed the profile pic. Any references to it out there are now wrong....I'm not that fat, not green, and don't have wings. Look for this sucker on intro cards starting with probably video #70; the current vid is pushing more towards KK all the time.

Current video: Dark Tranquillity, "Hours Passed In Exile" to Saishu-Heiki Kanojo. Progress check: 75%. Sword willing, it'll be done by this time tomorrow. If not, it'll wrap Saturday. Simple as that.

Some people believe that there should be lots of content in these posts in order to drive up their readership totals. Not true here. Whenever there aint much in here, it's inevitably because I'm pounding hard on a project I believe in, which is something that can't happen often enough.

Picking up a little bit of the production slack; I've clipped and finished one ep and am currently running the clips for #10 through TMPEG; pain and misery booyah here I come. This last ep was qute rich, and I'm now no longer worrying about getting 100%; I was about 2 minutes short going in, and I'll be surprised if I don't get at least 1:15 of that back from this ep. Nift.

I finally got my stinkin refund, so I can do up my 1040X and send the government the money I owe them...and send my pledge to the Donut, AND pay my health insurance, AND buy the Seiryu box for my mom like I promised. Sword do I wish I had a job. Hopefully, the people I'm house-sitting for will pay me decent when they get back from St. Thomas.

Current video: Dark Tranquillity, "Hours Passed In Exile" to Saishu-Heiki Kanojo. Progress check: 63%. If I can do two eps before I go take care of the dogs tonight, I'll only have to do one tomorrow morning, and I'll probably be able to have the video finished before I go in for club Friday night. If not, it'll probably stay not-fully-done until Saturday.

Sure, _Damage Done_ won the Album of the Year Ronnie, but this is the ultimate iron test. I've been listening to it exclusively while clipping, and I'm still not sick of it. I got sick of listening to _Human_ and _ITP_ (but not _Symbolic_) when I was doing #64, but not so here. Awesome CD; if you don't have it, you're wrong.
