i feel mislaid
2003-04-10 20:35:23
I got about four minutes out of the first episode on the chopping block today. This is insane, and required an insane amount of time. Of course, that means that if I was only doing one video, I'd have coverage. At this pace, though, another two eps will give the 8 minutes I need for projected 100% overage.
"Wait," you say, "since you're doing two songs with a total of 8 minutes of music, don't you need 16 minutes of source for 100% overage?" Not so. Because I'm not mentally capable of working on more than one video at a time, I don't need 100% overage on all videos, just enough to have 100% when doing the last one. Linear function, not geometric. So 2x may == x+x, but x+y+y does not necessarily ==2(x+y).
Current videos: Bill O'Brien, "Old Shoes" to Haibane Renmei and Gamma Ray, "A While In Dreamland" to Haibane Renmei. Progress check: 30% and 29%. Expected catalog numbers: #75 and #76. On this project I'm doing a new system of completion time and percentage tracking to bring a little more sanity to my stats department. Thus, though 6.5 hours of general video work have been done, #75 has 3.25+1 hours (had to massage the audio some) and #76 has 3.25+0 hours. This way, unlike the three prior doubleshots in SH history, each unique production hour is counted only once.
Con news:
#66 is in the finals at AniBo but #64 is not. This is just ridiculous. By every objective measure I can apply, #64 is the superior video. It's cut faster and more precisely. It is better organized thematically. It fits the definition of its category (Action) better than #66 fits its own (Drama). Its effects are better done, better conceived, more spare, and better integrated. And most importantly, it instantiates its initial vision much, much better.
Seriously, I'm going to have to start writing 'FLAGSHIP' and 'SIDE SALAD' on my con submissions. Or just ship one video at a time. My value system can't REALLY be 180-degrees opposed to everyone else's; deep in the irrational paranoid back of my brain I have to believe that these con coordinators are doing this to purposely fuck with me.

Information for video #74 is up and listed, though the distro version is still producing, and it won't be going out in 'real' form for at least another couple of months It's cool; not a world-breaker but neat.
So technically I should be giving out info on the next project, but instead will just say hoshiii........

Too bad I live in a state that doesn't take the Second Amendment seriously. I don't have the money for it anyhow, but there's no need to hate on a silencer as nifty as this.

Perhaps the people evaluating my app for previously mentioned job were too deeply impressed by the RSA-voting-app code I sent them to reply. Perhaps they just recognized it as Lisp Coder Trying To Pass His Contrarian Ass Off As Relevant and trashed it. Or perhaps they just haven't gotten it to compile yet.
What the hell ever, nothing changes on my end.
I ran into Kenny (guitars/vocals, My Pet Demon) last night while I was buying tapes, and found out that I'm gonna be missing whatever's going on at AniBo Saturday night. Sure, there's probably some most cool stuff going on, and it's time lost that I might be distributing CDs, but I'd much, much rather be up 30 miles to the north wrecking my neck to MPD, One Way Down, and Life In Vain. All three, hour-long sets, and they have a stage and lights at Sputnik's now. This is gonna be mass cool.
Anyway:
Current video: Sentenced, "Aika Multaa Muistot" to Rurouni Kenshin Seisouhen OVA. Progress check: 80%. Expected catalog number: #74. I might do drafting tonight, but I have a feeling that I'm going to just listen to Agalloch and Nevermore and work on the book. This video should be done by this time tomorrow, after which I start on a doubleshot project.
Speaking of video ideas,
SHIN HATSUBAI PRESENTS: HOW TO BE MURDERED BY FANGIRLS
Step 1: Start Rurouni Kenshin Seisouhen part 2 playing in DVD player. Turn sound off. Start Sentenced, _The Cold White Light_, playing in CD player. Skip tracks 1 and 2.
Step 2: Pay attention as track 10 starts playing, focusing on what's going on in the animation.
Step 3: Use this idea to create a cruel, heartless, masterpiece of character/fan abuse.
Step 4: Output to tape. Send to Shoujocon. Follow tape to New Jersey.
Step 5: Bribe/threaten contest coordinators into showing video over their better judgment. Promise them Duo and Heero drunk and naked.
Step 6: Watch video at showing from first row. Stand up and brag.
If that won't do it nothing will. I'm not yet evil enough to make this video, and hopefully I never will...but the idea will always be there, forever sleeping, like the void on Ash Tree Lane, ready to open lightyears wide at the first turn of darkness, stretching a new black hallway from five and a half minutes to millennia.........
Sword. I need to hang up and get back to work on the stinkin book.

nothing i have to choose

No interview today. Maybe tomorrow. Video #33 went up on the Carrot last night. Need to buy tapes. Reading House of Leaves again, this time with a different soundtrack (not just _Symbolic_ on endless repeat). Have to request stuff for Friday, as if I do get an on-site, it's more likely to be Monday next in any case and it'd suck to miss a week's borrowings for no reason. Couple of people I knew in school got busted with intent to distribute a whole damn pharmacy.
I shouldn't get too wrapped up in this job search crap, I'm prone enough to bipolarism as it is.
RELEVANT:
Current video: Sentenced, "Aika Multaa Muistot" to Rurouni Kenshin Seisouhen OVA. Progress check: 49%. Expected catalog number: #74. It's amazing. I've gone through only the first OVA (the shorter) and already have 7 of the 9 minutes I'm going to need. At this rate I may even be able to do two versions (one Kenshin, one Kaoru) of this tune, maybe even layer 'em together....if that won't just produce an impenetrable semi-transparent soup. Going to probably have to do some credits removal on this one, but AviSynth makes it not only possible but really simple in this case. Depending on inclination, I may or may not be done clipping and into drafting by this time tomorrow; something tells me that there's going to be a good bit of Yawara-watching in the future as well.
Offtopic:
I did some more work on the book Saturday night as well, and ended up buying a couple gun magazines along with Raijin 17 (job for tax purposes: Kicking Shonen Jump's Ass) for more info/research. One of them, Small Arms Review, actually had a centerfold. Hontou ya -- a centerfold of a M16/M4 converted to belt-feeding full auto resting on a bed of linked 5.56 rounds. Reminded me of Scotty Ian on 'right wing pornography'.

death metal came with the wind

Club was cool, but I'm having a hard time getting Type O's "Die With You" out of my head now, just after reflecting that this could maybe be my last club meeting for a long, long, time. The events of this coming week will probably decide that.
Anyways, I got the source to greenlight yet another video, and move one more into the one-volume-lack category, plus ofcourse more volumes of the series I'm following....and may have to leave off. This was a bad week for me to watch Otaku no Video. Makes easy decisions seem harder.
As I predicted, there was apparently a shortage of qualified people willing to relocate to Bar Harbor on three weeks' notice. So I have a phone interview early in the week, and if that goes well, personal interviews for the rest of it. I don't have the job nailed, and it's not like I don't have a backup plan, but the desire to finish collecting Akazukin Cha Cha, Fushigi Yuugi, and Marmalade Boy on VHS is IN NO WAY a big enough enducement to pass up a chance to go back to Maine and get paid basically to learn bioinformatics.
Current video: Sentenced, "Aika Multaa Muistot" to Rurouni Kenshin Seisouhen OVA. Progress check: 20%. Expected catalog number: #74. Currently capturing, hoping to do processing this afternoon and clipping tonight after breaking the OVAs up into some smaller chunks. The current plan is to rebalance the video post-production, instead of pre- like I had to do with #64 (due to odd capture ratios) and #67 (due to text formatting issues).
As a side note, if some Sentenced fan wants to buy me Isshin Shishi no Requiem, I'll try my hand at something for that, maybe "Konevitsan Kirkonskellot" or another take on "Kaamos", and thus complete a Sentenced-Kenshin sweep. No real desire to see this film otherwise though......
