JOURNAL: Kai Stromler (Kai Stromler)

Project Haibane is now up. Please enjoy. I'll maybe link it up once the AWA furor is over.

Today: Yamato movies and video work. Tomorrow: programming and video work. Monday: lots of programming. I'm not TOO far behind....

Two new ops up; more to come probably after the weekend. I'll probably also be able to sort of get back on track on the videos, as one of my three classes' homework assignments will resolve today, and another probably on Monday.

Two new videos up, 'd e f y' (by mass popular request) and 'no taste at all' (because I want to see if Phade's more open-minded than the people at Fanime), and four to come tomorrow. Yes, I know Project Haibane was supposed to premiere today, but that was on the assumption that I could get my shit together and send it to AWA Expo, but that just didn't happen. It'll go live sometime tomorrow morning.

No matter how #68 does, I'm NOT putting up 'say oi!'. That's set in stone right now.

I had to give a pan review today, which wasn't much fun. Unfortunately, the video deserved it. I tried to bring out the good points and give tips to remedy the bad, but still....it's not fun to pass out multiple 3s and 4s.

I allegedly have some potential public webspace here, so I'm going to investigate that and see if I can't use it to host VOTMs that are too extreme to go on the .org. Ofcourse, the U probably wouldn't be too cool about hosting snuff and porn either.....

  • the urge to dominate and occupy 2003-09-25 08:10:21
Work is bearing down on me full-bore, leaving very little time for video progress. I may get some in tonight. Tomorrow, I have to put up #55 due to overwhelming demand, and probably also #68. Those can go in while I'm writing the program for 478. I really need to read over those specs again.

The club here is kind of weird, almost gun-shy about showing licensed stuff. And their room costs are insane. There's got to be a better, more efficient, way to run showings. And there's got to be more and more reliable ways to get money than just asking the student assembly or begging people to buy raffle tickets. I was going over the figures last night and found that between memberships, pizza, and that penny drive, MITAC took in on the order of $2800-2900 over the year I was affiliated with them, on top of whatever their student-org operating budget was. It's not like there isn't an opportunity here to get a chunk of that; initial startup cost for a library would be negligible compared to the funds it could bring in, and pizza revenues for a club with such an early start time and long runtime would be insane. Can you say two deliveries per night? Of course, the economies of scale only start to kick in at the weekly level, and with current room costs this would be prohibitive.

Solutions aren't always universal. I need to get more info to see what can be done, and what needs to be changed to fit the culture out here. Of course, I'm not full-time staff but full-time student; I should probably be spending more time on my AI and 478 homework and less on how to kick things up at club.

  • life has new meaning 2003-09-23 07:38:07
No video progress. I'm officially behind schedule and probably won't finish by the end of the month. I did, however, get most of the current chapter out. I've got about one more major scene to finish writing, and then it'll be on to a flashback chapter that I've got mostly planned out. However, I also have to brush up on my C++ to write a pretty sophisticated program tomorrow morning, work on my 492 homework (both due next week, but hey), and read up in all my texts, so time is a definite issue.

I also have to watch more Guru Guru to erase the memories of sitting all the way through Hanappe Bazooka, which deservedly ranks as one of the dead-worst anime titles ever produced, if not the absolute bottom. It's supposed to be a parody of Devil Man, Yu Yu Hakusho, Video Girl Ai, and some other stuff, but it just SUCKS. It's actually head-bangingly stupid in places; even during I'll Make A Habit Of It, Megazone 23, and Ultimate Teacher, I never felt the need to bash my head against something to make the stupidness go away. And those are some BAD shows there. Hanappe Bazooka, though, has nothing going for it at all. It doesn't have the idiotic hilarity of I'll Make A Habit Of It, or half the Eighties Cheese Factor of Megazone 23. And it's certainly not in with The Ultimate Teacher in the so-bad-it's-good caption.

Hanappe Bazooka is so bad that it sucks. It's not as disgusting as the box art claims, but it's much more stupid. I'd rather have bought Kizuna; as much as I dislike yaoi, even gay porn is better than sitting through this crap. Encore should have paid ME four bucks to take it out of the goddamned store.

Work calls; hopefully I'll be able to get through some clipping tonight.

  • and though nothing have i learned 2003-09-22 08:27:07
The weekend was all right, even though I didn't do as much work as I wanted to. A little progress on the book, not much at all on the video, and some small high-value work on the 481 project. I'm planning on doing 481 and non-school stuff today, then kicking ass on 478 and 492 for the rest of the week.

Club was okay Saturday night, but a little anemic. They have financial issues and next to no revenue stream. No library, no pizza sales, and only once a month -- not cool. There's a potential staffer meeting on Wednesday, so I should be able to air some of those ideas out. The room is too big for the group size, still, though, and their song is somewhat lame. If you're going to sing to a wacky song, sing the whole song, don't just shout "DELUXE!" at the end of every line. Unfortunately, our AzuDai Song Section last fall was honed by singing said song 8 times per month, which is just simply not possible with this club. I wish they'd think of some of these things themselves, but when their whole reaction to rising room costs is to plead for people to buy more raffle tickets, you just can't trust them to.

I don't need to be roped into helping run another club. I'm retired, goddamnit. I may have gotten minion status at MITAC, but they had competent people, so I didn't have to do much. Hopefully, I'll be able to just air these ideas instead of having to implement them.

Current video: Hypocrisy, "Evil Invaders" to Excel Saga. Progress check: 48%. Expected catalog number: #82. I clipped one ep and audited my progress sheet, and this is the result. I was shooting for the end of this week for completion date, but that probably won't happen. I've got some time before Anime USA, maybe also before Sugoi Con.

That's it, work calls. More ops WILL be forthcoming if you haven't gotten yours yet.
