Software experiences
2006-01-22 13:50:54
In the morning I continued installing software at the video editing system. And I figured out how to change the drive letters.
In the afternoon I made some tests with MoviePack. With the corrected drive letter for my video drive I was able to open project "Secret" without any problems. I could see the progress that the software made. FOr example, the real time preview was much more fluent. For export you can choose between different rendering engines. I made a test with the two best, called "MXFinal" and "ProPro". I rendered project secret. with the MXFinal renderer it needed 25 minutes, with the ProPro 1 3/4 hours. The better quality of the ProPro renderer is nearly not remarkable. So it don't think it's worth to waste so much time. The MXFinal is good enough.
Sometimes "progress" is one or two steps backward. With MovieDV 4 came the DVD Authoring software Sonic MyDVD. I have only a CD burner, but it allowed me to burn a cDVD (it's a DVD on a CD) or to save a DVD in a folder. And it coexisted with Nero. MoviePack 7 comes with a new version of this software. During installation it required deinstalling Nero. Since I only have a CD burner, it allowed me only to create VCD (not even SVCD). I have no longer the option to save a DVD into a folder or to create a cDVD. Is this how progress looks like? I don't think so. So I got rid of it and will install Nero and the older version of MyDVD.

MoviePack 7
2006-01-21 14:13:08
Today I'v installed a secont Win2K at the partition from which i recently removed project "Secret". Getting the partition fromatted right, installing Win2K with all necessary drivers, installing (and partly downloading) the necessary programs/codecs for video editing needed the whole day. While it's good to have a clean installation, it has a flaw. The drive letters are different from my first installation, and I don't know how to change them. I fear that it is impossible. That means, if I want to continue the work on project "Secret" with MoviePack 7, I have again to point to the new location for all files. :( Or I must continue with MovieDV 4.
The additional possibilities are overwhelming. It'll take a long time to figure all out.Today I played around a little bit with the MPEG2 encoder. And it's incredible. It's not only a step forward compared with the encoder in MovieDV 4.0, it's a giant jump. It gives incredible good results even at low bitrates. with one setting I got a 22 s clip to a little bit more than 4 MB, which is comparable to a XviD/DivX encode. And it still had a remarkable good quality, but I have to confess, there wasn't much movement in the scenes.
One of the reasons that project "Secret" progresses that slow is that I only edit at weekends. My computer is placed in the sleeping room. I sleep with open window, so it is cold. If I return from work and turn the heating on it doesn't get fast enough warm. So I can't edit on working days.

100 DL's
2006-01-20 13:35:36
One of my vid's - A Life for a Dream (Remake) - has reached 100 downloads. It's the first one that has reached this number, and somehow it is like a delayed birthday present - that vid was premiered 1 year and 2 days ago. As I started making AMV's I never thought that one of my vids can break this limit. I didn't expect more than around 50 DL's to happen.

"Fun" with MovieDV
2006-01-18 16:42:57
Today I've read the the FAQ-Site of AIST that you can move a project. So I thought: "Well, that's good. That way I can clean the partition on my system drive, install a new Win2k and MoviePack 7 and finish project Secret with this." I tried, but it was a hard piece of work. I had to point to every single clip - all together over 120. After this was done I wanted to look if it's all right. But it did something it hadn't done for a long time - it crashed. So I started again and I wondered that it was much faster. As it was finished I found that some of the clips were not shown correctly. It showed the correct path to the clips, but the picture was a test picture (that color bars and stuff). Again I made several attempts to make it work, deleted temporary files, reboots and so on. Nothing seemed to work, always it asked me for too few clips and I had the test pictures. But at one attempt it asked me again for every single clip, and fortunatly it didn't crash this time. Within the next days I can start and install a Windows with only video editing related programs, including MoviePack.

Yesterday I went through all episodes of Noir to find a specific scene for project "Secret". I knew already one, but it had some issues. I hoped to find a better one, but without luck. So I used the problematic one and spent some time to solve one of the problems. It's zooming in but it shouldn't. So I played around with the settings of the zoom effect of VDM to compensate with a zoom out.
Today I made a mask for this scene. During import of the scene in MovieDV something strange happened. I imported it as image sequence, but due to a false count by me it was one frame to short. I thought: "No problem. Delete it, copy the missing frame in the folder and import again." So I did and was surprised about the result - still a frame too short. I looked in the folder with the images - correct number there, named as a sequence. I deleted the clip again and shut down MovieDV. Started it again, imported the sequence - same result, one frame missing. I repeated the procedure, this time I deleted the temp folder - still a frame missing. I moved the image sequence into a new folder, imported it - and it worked! I want to know where MovieDV stores that information.
During watching cartoons this morning I got an idea for an effect I can use. With this I'll reach the maximum number of video tracks in MovieDV.
