JOURNAL: Keeper of Hellfire

  • Justice? Injustice! 2006-02-21 16:55:39 Regarding the "Queen Millenia" Bootleg, I got today a letter in which the district attorney explained why they dont't think that it is an illegal copy. The reason was: The GVU doesn't know the copyright holders. The GVU is an private organization with the aim to sue copyright violations. As if this isn't enough incomptence, the answer to my request to send the DVD back to me if it is still claimed legal was: We have ordered the accused person to send it back to you. Why to hell have they returned the DVD to him? I have paid for it, and if it's legal it is my property, not his! Criminals are treated better than their victims. So some self justice may not be the worst idea!?
  • A good day 2006-02-19 16:20:43 Today I continued with improving the effects, using the much better possibilities of MoviePack. They look really great now, compared how they looked before. Seen that way, the creative block was a luck. I'm able to make a much better looking AMV now than I could have done with MovieDV. And I started to improve the timing. Meanwhile I have the impression, project "Secret" is like good wine or cheese. With time it doesn't rotten, it matures.

Some entries ago I complained that MoviePack crashes if I try to render to MJPEG. Out of curiosity I've tried it with the best render enginge "ProPro". And it worked! But it needed incredible 1:45h. After that I tried the "MX" renderer, which crashed before. And what should I say: Now it worked too! It needed less than 25 min. Still wondering why it crashed before.
  • Return of Motivation. 2006-02-18 14:12:03 Today I felt like continuing with project "Secret". At first I tried to edit the song, so that I have a little bit more length compared to the cut I do now. But it was impossible to find matching parts in the music so that I could cut a piece out. After some fruitless attempts I remembered that I had tried that without success as I started this project. But I have an idea how to deal with this. I have simply to much footage in that AMV. I can drop a hughe number of clips without destroying the story. Possibly it strengthens the story, and for sure the mood of the AMV. It was too fast paced for the sentimental stuff it is. But I didn't start to reorganize the project. Instead I worked on the dream/imagination effect for some scenes. I could improve it.
  • Too late? 2006-02-13 04:17:32 Yesterday it happened. A fellow member of a Noir fanboard has released an AMV which uses the original version of the song that I had chosen for project "Secret". As if it wasn't enough, it uses a number of scenes that I use. But since the contents of the AMV is different, I will make mine. But possibly I'll start from the scratch again. I had some test exports, to see the differences between the several render engines that I can choose in MoviePack 7. The results horrified me. Completly out of synch, and a change in the flow that isn't justified by the music. Though I believe in the alpha version at least the synch was right. I have to check this. Maybe I'll put project "Secret" on ice for a while and start a completly different project.

MoviePack 7 seems to be instable compared with MovieDV 4. I tried to export as MJPEG, since my footage is MJPEG and due to smart rendering an export would be much faster. With MovieDV this wasn't a problem, but MoviePack crashes. An export to HuffYUV works, but it is of course time consuming. What still surprises me is the high quality of the MPEG1/2 encoder that comes with it.
  • Law and Order? 2006-02-08 14:49:54 Back in December I'd bought a DVD at ebay, which pretended to be an original R2, but was a bootleg. I reported it to the police. Yesterday I got a letter from a district attorney. They simply told me "case closed". Reason: They couldn't find evidence that it is an illegal copie!? Are they blind? It was that obvious, you haven't to be an expert to see it. It looks to me like they had no interest to sue bootlegers. This made me loose the last bit of trust in the German authorities. And as if it isn't enough, to get the now declared legal DVD back (it was secured as evidence) I have to write a letter and to request it. They don't send it back automaticly. You can be sure, I don't care any longer if making and distributing AMV's is illegal or not. Who cares? But somehow I don't loose the feeling that the results had been different if I had been a major anime licensing company.

The progress of project "Secret" is very slow. I still lack motivation and creativity. I hope it will be better as the days become longer and it becomes warmer outside. Another reason may be that during the last month I had not much to do at work. So my brain became lazy.
