JOURNAL: Keeper of Hellfire

  • Beta stadium 2006-05-10 16:44:46 I think I can say now that project "Fallen Angel" has reached beta stadium. The most synching issues have been resolved. And even for that one line with the long clip I've found fitting footage. So I have to tweak the effects, possibly I'll drop some, and if I rmark remaining synching issues I can deal with them. Monday I nearly ran into a dead end with trying to synch a specific scene because of lack of footage. Fortunatly I noticed it right in time and stopped editing. After a two hours break I found a much better solution.

The synching problems that I have seem to be caused by me and by MoviePack. While listening to a song I can tell you where the significant beats are. It gets more difficult if I see video, and becomes worse while editing because I listen only short parts, so that I synch to beats which aren't significant to the rhythm. As if this isn't enough, MP gives its part to it. The previev lags a bit, so that I have the impression it is synched while it isn't. And at lower zooms of the timelime the waveform doesn't match the sound. The shown waveform isn't good at all, it has only half the height of the track.

This time I'd like to have some other beta-testers than me, but I don't know who.
  • 2006-05-08 04:04:51 The last days I spent much of my available spare time to improve the timing of project "Fallen Angel" Yesterday I made a test export and was shocked. While for some parts it worked well, others are worse than before now. This happened to me several times in the past. I have still no idea why it happens. It's me? Do I shift unintentionally some parts while working on others? It's the AIST software, either screwing up the project files or making wrong preview? I believe it's the software because sometimes it shows the wrong clips in the storyboard. And then there is the issue that it changes the color of one clip if "intelli rendering" works (means the clip should only be copied). In the preview it's ok, VDubMod shows it correct and any player too. I have to force MP7 to render this clip to get the correct colors. So I applied transparancy with 1% strength.

This weekend was the season opening party of the Biker Union. I really enjoyed it. All three days was fine weather. Normally this party is rain safe (means it'll rain at least at one day ;) ). So nearly everyone expressed his/her disappointment that it didn't rain. XD Even my colleagues were teasing me "You come with the motocycle and it doesn't rain?"

At the way to this party I was in danger to run out of fuel. From the moment the display showed that I'm on reserve fuel I was looking for a filling station but I didn't find any. Some kilometers after the needle had reached it's final position I reached a filling station. But it closed at 20 hours, and it was around 21 hours. What made me really upset was their advertising. It was teasing me: "AVIA We aren't everywhere in the world. But we are where you need us." Damn, where were they as I needed them? You can imagine my mood. I was close to destroy that fucking advertising. I risked to continue my way. In the worst case I'd called the automobile club. But I had luck. Not only that I reached the party area, I was able to make it to the closest filling station next day. The tank is specified with 17.5 liters, I filled in 17.63 liters.
  • It morphs! 2006-05-02 16:02:33 I got the morph to work. It costed me a couple of hours to find it out. The manual was nearly as helpfull as no manual. I spent much time drawing the outlines of the charas and the result didn't look different from a simple crossfade. In the end it was only necessary to mark some spots ot the face (like eyes, nose, mouth, chin) to make it work. It can be applied much faster that way. But for sure I will put further investigation in that. It annoys me that I put much effort in outlineing the hair and it din't warp, only crossfade. At least I noted no difference in the behaviour of marked and unmarked hair. :/ It doesn't look bad like it is, but I'd like to have it "perfect".
  • Milestone reached 2006-04-30 13:50:52 Project "Fallen Angel" has reached alpha stadium. It's edited over full lenght now. Without the bad weather I wouln't be so far. I still have to add some effects and to tweak the timing. One of the effects will probably need much time, since it's complex, I use it the first time and the manual isn't very detailed. It's a morph. And I have to check why I have an unwanted effect. In one clip changes the color without any effect applied.

Despite having a storyboard it developed different. I had forgotten that I have for one line of the lyrics only one clip. While I complained in my last journal entry that many clips are that long, these clip didn't even span one line. In first step I did follow the storyboard and left a gap, to be filled later. Later on I had an idea how I could fill that gap with rearranging the clips. I think it turned out nice.

Yesterday I watched "Batman Forever" (again). Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face and Jim Carrey as Riddler are brilliant. Val Kilmer wasn't credible, neither as Bruce Wayne nor as Batman. He could easily been replaced by a piece of wood. It's the same for all Batman movies. I don't understand why he was choosen for this role.
  • 2006-04-27 16:36:05 Noir is a really boring Anime. ^_^ It's partly so slow paced, that single scenes span 3 lines of the lyrics of the song for project "Fallen Angel". The song itself isn't fast paced, and I want to have at least 3 scenes per line.

Making a storyboard was a good idea. So I can't forget which scenes I wanted to use for which part. For the parts which had been detailed I could make the fitting clips and the editing is fast. For the vague parts I made more clips, 'cause I couldn't decide. And it slows down editing, because the decision has to be made. (And of course, making more clips needed more time too). So for the next project I'll put more effort into the storyboard. The time isn't wasted, I think overall I'll save time.

The project itself is around 2:25, which is a little bit less than 2/3. Originally I wanted to make it effectless, only cuts and fades. But the length of the footage has forced me to overlay some parts. I think I'll adjust the intensity of the overlay to the music. And I got the idea some parts will be supported from decent effects. So after finishing the beta (at the current speed within 4 days) I'll play around with this.

MoviePack shows some strange behavior. The storyboard shows partly the wrong scenes, but the project itself is ok. This time is the first time that I use the monitor feature. It eases cutting.
