Footage!

I've received the Blue Submarine No. 6 DVD's. 3 weeks, that's pretty fast since I choose the cheapest and slowest delivery method. The usual time is between 4....5 weeks. As I ordered it I wondered why it counts as 3 items. For a show with 4 episodes and an overall running length of 2 hours I'd expected 1 DVD. But it's the special edition. So there is a bonus DVD with tons of extra stuff. And the show is at 2 double-sided (!) DVD's, only one ep per side! With an average video bitrate of over 8000kBit/s it's more than twice as high as at the ADV Noir DVD's. Smartripper and VDM report that the maximum data rate exceeds even the DVD-Video specs??? So I wonder that it plays at a normal DVD player. Or I've misunderstood the specs, or both progs report it wrong, maybe confused by the copy protection. The quality is incredible, beside deinterlacing no further filtering will be necessary. Of course, even with that high data rate 2 eps would fit on one side. But there's some additional stuff like menus and some more extras and together it exceeds the available space of one side.
I've taken a short look at it on my TV-set. For some reasons, if I play back NTSC DVD's, it's alway displayed a bit too far left. The subtitles change too fast in some parts so I don't get them. Probably I have to watch the English dub. Hope I can understand it all.

WTF?

The defrag and the virus scan didn't help. MP7 crashes if I try to work. Not only with my MEP project, with "Secret" too. Probably it did the last time as I said it works. While the MEP Project freezes MP7 immediatly, I can work a little bit with project "Secret". But if I try to switch to the story board, it crashes. The reason is the same: "...failed to initialise MX Final Renderer". While I can probably replace it for the several preview functions with the OpenGL renderer, I need it for the final rendering because of quality reasons. I've tried the repair function - nothing. So I will do a complete new installation of Win2K and MP7. That's the advantage of having an own OS for editing on a separate partition. Such actions don't affect anything else. But it consumes a lot of time, so it's a task for the weekend. That project "Secret" crashes is a good thing so far that there is hope after a new installation my MEP project will work too, so that I don't have to redo all cuts. I'm still clueless why MP7 crashes. Nothing unusual happened. I hope I don't have to do a new installation every 6 monts.

For my MEP segment I've cut out a 24 minutes piece from Queen Millenia and imported it into MP7 to cut it into scenes. That way I get familiar with it too, without watching it. With 16 mintues I'm done, but now MP7 crashes every time if I try to open it. No idea why. I haven't installed or removed anything, and other projects I can open without problems. So I defragmented both HDD's and made I virus check. Haven't tested it now, but I hope that will solve it. At least my experiences with MovieXOne and MovieDV give hope for that, since they were running more stabile after a defrag. If this doesn't help, I have to make a new project and to do it all again. :(
With the scene from Noir for the transition for project "Secret" I had no luck. If a sequence of scenes start with a closed book and ends with an opened book you expect to see how it's opened. But it wasn't there. I have the minimal hope that there are different scenes in Noir that I can use too.
At saturday I was at a medieval spectaculum. It was entertaining. Not only the groups which made music, acrobatics, sword fights and so on. Also the hughe amount of people running around in supposedly medieval costumes. But the most of them had been inspired by Hollywood fantasy movies instead from medieval clothing. Of course this was a market too. Things like "medieval" clothing, knights armors, medieval (show) weapons, pottery, carving work and so on. Many things, since hand made, with inacceptable high prices. I bought one thing that is usefull at biker parties - a drinking horn. You can store it in a holder at your belt even if it's filled. So you don't need to hold it while standing around and talking with others.

Unusual time to write my journal, but at the moment I'm bored at work. XD
Yesterday I fixed a little problem in project "Secret" - a border disappeared during a transition. I'm not satisfied with this transition since a while. It's from the Prodad Adorage demo package. You can see that it is CG, so it fits neither RL-footage nor anime. I was thinking how I can give it an anime (or at least cartoon) look. If it was a built in transition of MP7 I could apply the cartoon effect, but since it's from the Prodad package....
But then I got the idea. With the possibilities of MP7 and some Noir-footage I can recreate the transition. It'll need some effort, especiallly if it should look perfect. But I think it's worth it since I'll get a 100% fitting transition. My only concern is that the footage that I have in mind doesn't look like I remember it. It happened to me several times, maybe it's time to rewatch Noir.
I wanted to start with my MEP segment. I could swear, on sunday I'd cut out a 1/2 hour piece of Queen Millenia and saved as HuffYUV, so that it is easier to skip through and select scenes. But the HuffYUV wasn't there, and it wasn't in the job list either. But I had opened it sunday in VDM. The proof was the AVS file, which was changed at sunday because I'd disabled all filters so that searching doesn't become too slow. So I'd selected that piece, but neither saved nor added to the job list. :/ Yesterday I was so uninspired while looking through the footage (Please! Not again! I hope it's only the weather. Since two weeks we have rain and hail nearly every day. And because of the clouds it's mostly dark.) While I have a good couple of scenes in mind, I have only a vague idea where exactly to find them. So I'll watch it again before starting this project.

I'm editing.

During the last week I'd spent several hours working on project "Secret". Tweaking my self-composited transition to make it look more realistic. Experimenting with the effects to express better what I want to show and let them look less noobish. The use of effects to show what I mean is an important part of this project. The scenes alone do it for me, and possibly for some of the oyasumi veterans which remember the idea behind it. But I have to visualize it for a wider audience. And that's damn difficult. For some parts I still have no idea how to do it. For one scene I've changed it radically today. It became much better that way, more believable. Yesterday I decided to throw away 30 seconds. They weren't necessary to support the statement of the AMV. In opposite, they were able to turn it around. I'll add some other scenes instead, but not full 30 seconds. Since I cut the song during the bridge, the margin is wide enough. I'm still not satisfied with the flow, it changes too much. Maybe I'll throw away some of the scenes that make difficulties and can stretch that way other scenes to keep the flow more consistent.
