JOURNAL: Keeper of Hellfire

  • thoughts on some animes... 2006-06-28 05:54:20 ...but an update about my MEP segment first. I'v exported the raw cut and watched it as a whole. Again I've noticed that the synching is a bit weird. XD For one part it was because the length of the footage didn't match and I wanted to care about that later but did forgot. For other parts I synched to a side beat and missed the main beat. Meanwhile I'm used to this and it will not need that much effort as it needed in the past. But the next time I'll have not much time for editing at all since our choir is preparing a big party, which will start friday evening and end in the night from monday to tuesday.

In the moment MTV Germany airs Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. So I watch it, but so far there is nothing except the opening song that catches me. Many parts aren't animated at all, so I doubt it deserves the name Anime, it's more a manga with sound instead of speach bubbles. The facial expressions of the charas show nearly no emotions, the hair behaves like made of concrete or at least with tons of hairspray in it. I can't find a relation to any of the main charas. The BGM isn't noticeable. The most episodes end with an open question, which probably never will be answered. The dialogues are partly long and boring. I couldn't find a story arc so far, and there seems to be no character development. And even if there is the possibility for a great disput about AI and cyborgs in it, it doesn't seem to happen. But I'll wait with my final judgement until it's end. And of course I have always to take in account that something got lost through the German dub.

Now some thoughts about my most favourite animes: Noir and Queen Millenia (TV series). meanwhile I've found out that the full name of QM is New Tale Of The Bamboo Cutter: Queen Millenia. The Tale Of The Bamboo Cutter is an old japanese tale and QM is really a modern version of it. The next paragraphs are spoilerific, so be warned.

I had always the feeling that there is a strong resemblance between Noir and QM (which is 20years older). My first idea was that the relationship between Yayoi Yukino and Hajime Amamori. A tall longhaired blonde and a short, younger high school student with short dark hair. The blonde changes her attitude while being together with the high school student who loves her unconditionally. The blonde holds several time the decision over the life of the high school student in her hand. There are more resemblences, but the roles are reversed in Noir compared with QM. Hajime loses his parents and is raised by his uncle. Yayoi is partly responsible for their death. She has fake parents and a secret identity, which conflicts with Hajime's interests and endangers him.

You can imagine how surprised I was as I found that there are more resmblances, as if it wasn't enough. A mother with three daughters - Altena and the saplings. All three dauhters are suppossed to becomes the Millenial Queen a certain points of the story, which I compare with becoming Noir. The oldest daughter is is casted out by her mother because she doesn't develop like it's expected for a QM - like it happens with Mireille. The second is raised far away by fake parents and becomes the QM. But her changed attitude let's her side with her older sister and fight anything QM stands for. So she's like Kirka. The third one is raised by her mother and dies in fight with QM as she claims her crown. So she's like Chloe. In addition, she is QM's twin, which brings her in a special position to QM like Kirika and Chloe are. And think about Kirikas words about Chloe: "She was my other me" Isn't a twin really another me? So I wonder if it's only a weird resemblance or really Noir is influenced by QM?
  • First step 2006-06-25 15:41:55 The basic editing for my MEP segment is done. Either it's easy to edit, or I get used to editing. It's very less time that I spent so far. The "only" thing I have to do now is applying effects. For the most parts I have them already in mind. What will need much time is cleaning the footage. I have already a script which improves the footage much, but imho it could still look better. I could edit with unfiltered footage because no deinterlacing is necessary, so all the frames will be the same.

Probably I have to extend the deadlines for the Freddy Mercury MEP. It's not because I fear that I don't finish my segment right in time. It's because I'll be in vacation during that time which was planned for beta testing. As I started this project I had no plans for vacations, especially not for this time since it's the summer break. But my freinds have invited me to join them for vacation, and they have kids in school.
  • 2006-06-21 15:18:30 I have managed to edit a part of my MEP segment. For the first 36 seconds the basic editing is done. It feels really good to have some progress. In the moment I'm stuck with finding a scene that will match a specific noise of the music. I don't think that will be much of a problem, but this evening I had no patience any longer.

The last days I felt no drive to edit, but I played again a bit around with the effects of MP7. Partly it's incredible what you can do, but for so many things I have no idea at the moment how I can use them in an AMV.

I'm still wondering about the star scores of my vid's. Ep#25 became again the lowest scored while I think it should be higher rated than A Life For A Dream and it's remake. My personal belief is that it is the ending, especially the final kiss, why the people like it less. Though I have no proof for this. That A Fallen Angel is the highest scored is ok. I thinks it's my best so far, at least from the technical POV. As far as originality matters, it's Ep#25.
  • 2006-06-18 16:31:43 An update from the latest journal entry: Yes, I was able to get the transition out of the project file. It was a matter of a minute. For my MEP segment I try some new workflows. I've found a way to improve the visual quality of the footage remarkably and have created an effect which I will use through the constant background beat of "Flash Gordon".

Arigatomina has reflected about editing programs and their influence at AMV's in her last journal entry. While I agree with her that you can make good AMV's and even realise new concepts with WMM if it's supported by a good graphics programm and some other tools, her conclusions about the semi-professional tools are wrong. A graphics program is made for still images while an editing program is designed for movies. So if you can make the same effect with a graphics program and an editing program so it's much easier for AMV-making to use the editing programm. You'll reach your goal with less effort in shorter time. So you have more time for other hobbies or to put your creativity in more AMV's. If I had MP7 at the time as I made ep#25, I could have saved many hours clipping and merging with GIMP and the result would have looked much better.

During a ride through the hills at the Moselle I had a deja vu: A small winding road, red rocks and a little wall before the abyss - Corsica. One day I must return to this beautyfull island. Maybe I find the Bouquet manor. XD
  • Back in Business. 2006-06-11 15:50:56 Since the weather forecast predicted fine weather for the weekend I decided to install my editng patition during the evenings. I started with a stupid mistake. I erased the partition to have a clean installation. It needed much time, too much. So I aborted it and could see what was happening. I'd forgot to press the shift key together with the "del" key. So all was moved in the recycler. And as it tried to erase the recycler, it ran in circles. XD

It's horrible to get all things to run. I'm really happy that I have a separate partition for editing. If I imagine I'd to reinstall all programs... Well, I got it to work. I can open all my projects. A surprise I had with the MEP segment. The HuffYUV was damaged. No program could read it. Fortunatly I have created it with VDM's job control and saved the job list. So I could recreate it without problems. After opening the project file in MP7 all cuts were at the right place. Since I used the fine weather this weekend for riding my bike, theres not much progress. But at least I've sliced it into scenes completly.

A little accident happened with project "Secret". I deleted the self created transition too. I was sure I have a safety copy of it, but it seems like it was on the deleted partition. It has no consequences for the project as is because it's stored inside the project file too. But if I make changes and have to insert it one more time or want to tweak it further.... Maybe I find a way to get it out of the project file.
