JOURNAL: alternatefutures (Jim Schuler)

  • 18 hours down, 2 to go 2001-11-29 16:43:23 Well, Bryce has been rendering the same scene, you guessed it, 18 hours now. I started off saying it would only take 7 to finish. So, I'm just killing time right now. Once it's done with this I can start rendering the engine wash for it (2 or 3 more renders). Then, it's back to photoshop to make it look purdy. But until then...

Pyro, I know exactly what you mean when you say you know of the perfect scene to go with a sequence but it doesn't exist. I've had that problem with the majority of my video. It makes me wish I could draw better/quicker so I could just make the thing myself :)
  • God I'm Good! 2001-11-27 13:45:00 Oh boy! I did a test of my engine wash... FREAKEN BEUATIFUL! It looks like I'm actually using a real rendering program, but it's just Bryce (and an old version to boot) composited in Photoshop! Sweetness! I need to definately remember this for my future scenes, the possibilities are staggering. Of course, this is a lot more work intensive... but good God! This video will kick ass when it's done! The model is gourgeous, the backgrounds are sweet, and now, the lighting! I'm just really excited! If any of you have ever, ever, ever worked with Bryce you will understand when you finally see the finished product. For you bastards with access to Maya/3D Studio Max, you probably won't care. Well, you might... but Lord, I didn't know it would look that good! Thank God for Photoshop!
  • WIFHG 2001-11-25 01:07:07 More work on the model, this time I was adding lighting and engine wash and all that other fun stuff. To tell the truth, I don't know if this stuff will look good. I'm not working with 3DStudioMax or Lightwave or Maya here, this is Bryce3D; cheap, old, basic modeling. Well, durring this time I found more polygons I could shave off this model, bringing the total poly count below the 500,000 mark. It still looks good too. Anyway, I spent some of the day watching Titan AE (great movie, btw, if you haven't seen it yet) in order to get an idea for what the engine wash should look like, and I'm going to see if I can simulate it. If you knew Bryce you'd be laughing at me right now, but I have a plan. Watching the movie had a strange side effect. I've been possessed to download "Over My Head" and "It's My Turn to Fly" and playing them over and over. I really can't get enough of it as there are such great visuals going with both the songs that I have playing through my head. You see, for those who can't understand how someone can listen to the same song fourty times in a row, that's how I do it. I get these really good movies playing through my head, and I discover something new each time. It makes me want to make an AMV to these songs, if they weren't already used ten times already. I still might do it if I continue making 3D models of anime ships. It could be a very cool video. I'd love to get my hands on one of the big three render engines though. It'b be kinda neat to recreate the Wake Angel scene in Titan AE, but replace the Valkyrie with the Outlaw Star or the Swordbreaker or the Bebop... OK... maybe not the Bebop, but maybe the Swordfish or Hammerhead... of course the scale wouldn't really work on those two.
  • 529370 polygons on the wall, 529370 polygons, take one down, pass it around, 529369 polygons on the wall. 2001-11-23 19:46:38 The Outlaw Star model has been sucessfully imported, smoothed, and textured in Bryce! Render times for the raw model vary between 1:30 to 3:00, depending on what else my computer is doing at the time, so it's actually pretty efficient. Bryce doesn't even mess up the model. Well, it did, but I was able to correct the problems without reoccurance. So, all that I have to do is get the thing moving, which I'll start tonight. As you can guess from the title, the polygon count of the model was 529370. Considering I was initially looking at a count in excess of one million, that's not at all bad. Oh, and one more thing, I took a test render of the OS and submitted the result to the Rhinocerous gallery (www.rhino3d.com), hopefully it will be up there sometime in the near future.

So... pyro... ready to claim defeat? ;)
  • It's a turkey shoot! 2001-11-23 01:15:47 Ah... Thanksgiving good... I have lots to be thankfull for, such as lots of mashed potatoes and lots of stuffing... oh! oh! and lots of turkey... yes... and let's not forget lots of pumpkin pie! What's that? We have french silk as well? Then I guess lots of that too. Huh? Banana cream pie? Pass that over! Pecan pie! Yes! Jello? Why, there's always room for Jello! Did I say I love Thanksgiving? Yes, I believe I do. The only thing that could make this better would be a turkey sandwhich... ahhhh.... yum. Now time to find a cave and hibernate until spring, or at least until tomorrow morning, at which time I will continue to be thankfull... for leftovers!
