JOURNAL: alternatefutures (Jim Schuler)

  • As promised... ASDFG 2001-10-05 02:06:28 Progress slow on the AMV, as I have expected it to be. I'm still waiting for my DVDs. It seems it took the US Postal service an entire two days to move the discs from one warehous in Memphis, TN, to a different warehouse... in Memphis... TN... Strange, because I'm in Illinois, but what can you expect from the US Postal service? Beyond that, however...

Photon, Photon, Photon... why must your frames interlaced be? Here I have this perfect shot of Keyne giving a playful/seductive glance and I would SO love to eliminate the background from it. Unfortunately half of the frames consist of... well... half frames. Normally it would be just a small matter of time for me to clean it up, but for FIVE FRAMES it could take weeks! It's times like these when I wish I could draw... So, I am moving on. I am revisiting my old friend, Saber Marionette J. Ah yes, how familiar I have grown with the footage since my previous AMV. I just wish I could fit Lime into this one, but alas, she just doesn't fit the song. So Bloodberry will represent those precious Marionettes. Kick their asses Bloodberry!

Wow, I mentioned drawing up there didn't I? Truth is I kinda can, it just takes awhile. I've got to draw an original and cute anime girl for a friend's website. The problem is I'm just so damn out of practice that it's hard to draw a simple face! You see, unlike other artists, I have no talent. Only skill. This means that nothing comes naturally, and most of my drawing comes from tricks I learned in Geometry class back in high school and from playing with Rhino 3D. So I need to relearn a lot of those tricks that I've forgotten.

Well, since people actually read these things (18 hits from two updates) I have a message for you all... REVIEW MARIONETTE INSIDE MY HEAD! PLEASE! Get Go!Zilla and use it to download the version on TommyRude's server. It works! Normally I'm lucky if it would take me 12 hours to download a similar size video off his server... if I even get a connection. However, I downloaded one of Absolute Destiny's vids from his servers three times while I slept. I wish I could tell the thing to stop trying once it's finished downloading... maybe I should look at the help file... anyway, the point is, it works. Now, enough of my ranting... you are free to go...
  • Progress 2001-10-02 00:02:55 You know, I really hate filling out the title entry... I'd try to post a message without it but I'm afraid it'll be rejected and I'll have to write my rant all over again. So, for now expect absolutely no effort whatsoever to go into them. I might just end up titling all my entries "ASDFG." That said...

It appears that I put the cart before the horse on my editing job, so that scene has been put on hold until I get the rest of the footage needed for it. However, I have completed altering another scene from Photon and the results: Beautiful! Now I just need the stuff to composite it with and I'll have a great sequence. Right now all my footage is far superior to DVD quality. We're talking near original cell here. The only thing hurting it is the difference between analog and digital. Unfortuneately this will not be able to continue, but there will be a significant portion of the AMV reflecting this quality.

Today I put in the order for Burn Up W, as well as Hyper Dolls. I know nothing about the second except that it's eleven bucks plus shipping, but it's entirely possible there's appropriate material for the video, if not I can at least get another review up on my site.

Sometime in the near future I'll be getting rid of the "guestbook" on my webpage and replace the link with an AMV page. I may even try to hunt down another server so I can have lots of dedicated space for it. When I do this I'm considering putting up some test AVIs of what I'm doing so you can begin to piece together what the hell I'm talking about and whether or not you should put aside the bandwidth to download it when it's all done.

And speaking of web storage I'm also going to be taking a close look at services such as KTurn and Streamload to host high quality versions of my videos on rotating cycles. Streamload seems to be more popular so that seems like the most likely choice. However, to this date I have never figured any of these services out.

Anyway, I'm feeling good about the prospects of this video, despite the heavy effects load it has on it. Although, I'm probably going wind up reusing some of this material in other projects to justify the shear amount of time I'm spending on them... three days for a little over two seconds of part of a composite shot... yeah, definately going to have to reuse that SOMEWHERE!
  • I can build mechs too! 2001-09-28 18:40:47 So, Phade added a counter to the journal. Amazing how that simple feature alone has gotten so many other people to start writing in these things. Well, at least we can be sure people are reading them now :)

I've been taking a hiatus from the new AMV, mainly because I actually clicked on a banner advertisement and came upon a demo version of Roboforge. Really cool game. Construct robots, program an unlimited number of moves for them, set up their AI and the fight 'em. Best of all, there are tournaments you can enter to compete for money. I need to buy the full version, my trail period is rapidly disappearing :)
  • Delays and Delays... 2001-09-23 02:11:08 See what being a good samaritan gets you? I volunteer to help Pyro fix up some of her images thinking they were just a few simple manga scans. Course, that's before I actually saw them. Anyway, a promise is a promise so my AMV is on hold for awhile while I give her some purdy graphics, but I'm sure it will be worth it. Of course, I should probably download one of her videos to make sure... yes... and review it... of course... yes...

That Photon thing that I'd say would be done in a night? Hah! I ment four! That's what it looks like. I didn't think the scene I was altering was actually zooming out. That seems to be the way with these composite shots of mine. I think they are a simple pan or still shot, but then the director has to get slightly more complicated and make my life hell :) So, I've got 86 frames of animation to edit... individually... crap... To make matters worse it isn't even as good a scene as I originally thought it was, but it will still work. But the real thing of it is I don't think anyone will even notice unless I do a crappy job. Sigh... the things I do for love :)

All though that hoped for completion in time for Anime Central seems like a long way off, I have a feeling I'm going to need every day. Meanwhile these side ideas I have bouncing around in my head find more and more substance. Thanks to Pyro I found Angel Sanctuary which looks to have great artwork and theme for one of my ideas. But you see, that's the last thing I need right now! I still have so much anime on my "to get list" that I can't be distracted from this current video. Meanwhile my wallet starves for cash. Well, all I can say is you people better enjoy the damn thing when it's finished! :)
  • Hardware Donor 2001-09-20 16:26:23 My old, venerable and loyal P90 recently burned out it's C-Drive. After reviewing the situation it was found that it would be too much trouble, if not impossible, to dig out the onld Win3.11 Disks and the Win95 upgrade to get it working again. So, it's now being broken down for parts for a friend who is restoring several other relics. It will live again, only in many pieces.

I've played around a little more with Photoshop. It looks like one of my transitions will work really well. Another is just too unlikely to happen. Again, too much work and too little reward. Hell, I'm still not sure if it would even look right. So, some variety has been lost from the planning stage.

I now have some of Photon digitized. Namely the footage that I need to spend a lot of time with. At first glance it seems like it would take me several days if not weeks in order to alter everything, but I think I can have it finished tonight. I'm thinking of writing a guide on how to do this stuff as I'm getting pretty darn good at it if I do say so myself. I'll ask Phade about it when this project nears completion.

The song I've choosen has been cut down to size some. It's still a little repetitive but it's far better than before. I actually have two splices in there. The first one is a bit noticable, but it's as close a match I could make in Premiere. The second cut is right on the moeny and you won't notice it unless you know exactly what to expect. So, I can say I'm happy with the result.
