JOURNAL: Captain Spadaro (Michael Spadaro)

  • Of books and storms 2006-10-03 08:38:56 Captain's log, stardate 2006.276: I spent the better part of 2 hours at Barnes & Noble yesterday, rediscovering my enjoyment of reading. I read through William Shatner's latest book, Star Trek: Captain's Glory, and was rather...surprised by what I read. I'm not going to go into detail, but lets just say that certain plot details sounded very similar to a popular anime. I also picked up a copy of the Star Trek manga, which I really got a kick out of. It kinda reminded me of why I'm a Star Trek fan: because it stimulates my imagination.

Moving on, we had a hell of a storm here last night. Up until about 10:30, it wasn't that bad, but then the wind picked up something fierce. It knocked over 2 trees in our backyard, blew something into one of my windows (shattering the outer pane of glass), scared the crap out of my cats, and the power flickered for a few minutes.
  • five years 2006-09-11 23:02:14 Captain's log, stardate 2006.254: On this date, 5 years ago, 19 hijackers wrested control of 4 planes, and turned them into flying bombs. 2 of them smashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, sending both of them to the ground within a span of 2 hours. A 3rd crashed into the Pentagon, the heart of America's military defense. The 4th plane, en route to Washington, D.C., was brought down by the passengers, who were determined to prevent the hijackers from succeeding in their mission. Some have compared the events of that day to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Some have called it the start of the first war of the 21st century. Me? I didn't know what to call it then, and truthfully, I still don't know what to call it. All I know is that it showed some of the worst and best of humanity.
  • five years, plus other stuff 2006-09-09 12:32:56 Captain's log, stardate 2006.252: As the 5th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, approaches, some are asking what are the lessons of 9-11. Strangely enough, when I heard this, it got me thinking, as well. What ARE the lessons of 9-11? It's strange. I would've thought I'd be able to answer that question in a heartbeat. This probably warrants more thinking on my part.

Switching gears now, a friend of mine has a birthday coming up. I'd like to be able to go to whatever celebration is planned, but, unfortunately, this friend's mother sorta hates me, even though we have never met face-to-face.
  • some thoughts 2006-08-24 21:21:18 Captain's log, stardate 2006.236: Temporarily living on one's own can be a double-edged sword. On the plus side, I have the whole house to myself, meaning I've got full control of the HD TV in the living room. On the minus side, I think I've become used to having someone else in the house, because, well, I'm feelin' real lonely right now. My cats do keep me company, to be sure, but there is a big difference between their presence and the presence of another human (or humans).

Anyway, in other news, I started college on Tuesday. So far, things are going okay, but the real highlight of this week has to have been on Wednesday, when I got a friend back. That put me in a pretty good mood, so much so that I thought I was gonna cry from joy at one point. That sounds somewhat cheesy, I know, but that IS how I felt.
  • belated reflections 2006-08-21 00:39:20 Captain's log, stardate 2006.232: The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah appears to be holding up, so maybe there is hope for the region after all. The thing I've been somewhat fixated on, though, is the number the U.N. Security Council gave the resolution. That number is 1701. U.N. Security Council resolution 1701. Is it a sign of something, or just a weird coincidence?
