JOURNAL: Red Wolf (Paul Quinnell)

  • SYSTEMS FUNCTIONAL: ONLINE! 2002-06-09 11:38:22 Well version 2.0 of Drops of Sailor Jupiter is finally online and available to the public. Now I can finally shut up about this one measly video =P

You can check it out at http://www.animemusicvideos.org/video.php?v=7759 (yes, there is a direct link to the actual video). I hope y'all enjoy it and drop me a line and let me know what you think.
  • Render! Render! Render! 2002-06-08 20:01:56 Well I may not be that good about posting regular journal entries but rest assured that that time is being put toward my videos (yeah, right).

As I type I am converting my now finished Drops of Sailor Jupiter (version 2.0) video into an MPEG-1 file. After that I'll convert it into a smaller QuickTime movie (I really need to get more space on my host site) and upload it all night long (I really need DSL, too). So I guess that means by sometime on Sunday my first video will be removed from AMV.org and will be replaced with the new and improved version.

I want to thank everyone who previewed my video for me. I got a lot of positive responses (but then again it was mostly Sailor Moon/Sailor Jupiter fans who saw the thing). If you've seen my new version rest assured that it didn't change much between the preview and the final posting. I added/removed a transition or two, move a few scenes around, and added a cheap title sequence to the beginning of the video. The reason for the delay in the final posting has been I've been needing to see the video a few times in a row WITHOUT wanting to change something. Now I know why George Lucas says that movies aren't finished, they're abandoned.

Look for the new video under the old name: Drops of Sailor Jupiter by Red Wolf Studio (yes I'm adding a studio name).
  • A Day Late (Or So) 2002-06-03 21:26:20 Well unlike what I was expecting I finished my video Sunday afternoon. Now the last few times I've reviewed the video I've made slight chances so I'm guessing I'm not quite finished yet =) I did put a copy of the video online for a few people to review (before I make the final commitment to replace my first version with this video). Anyone who'll make the effort to email me (paul@red-wolf.net) and doesn't mind letting me know what they thought of the new video is welcomed to view it. So far the reviews are favorable so we'll see what develops.

On a semi-related note, I'm starting to look into DSL so that should make my AMV life much better =)
  • Working During the Week Doesn't Help 2002-06-01 15:45:55 Well I ended up getting all but two DVDs ripped over Memorial Day weekend. The problem with that is it took me four days to rip the last two DVDs. Last night around 3:00 AM the last scene was decoded and I've since started on the actual video.

Right now I've got 2:45 done out of 4:20. However I may find myself going back to a few sections so I guess it is safe to say I'm halfway done with the video. I figured that I would keep all of the sections of my old video that I liked and the rest would be replaced with new footage. After getting over halfway through the song I find that only two clips are in the same place they were in my original version of the video =P Hopefully this will prove to be a good thing since several folks commented that my first video was too action packed for the song (upon further review I tended to agree).

It really has helped to go from beginning to end and skipping around like I did last time. I've had to stop for a while because I hit a block and that would get frustrating because I knew what I wanted to do 15 seconds after the block. But other than having to hold myself back from jumping ahead it is going well. It also doesn't heard that I know my video editor a lot better now (first video was the first time I touched the program).

I feel like I could finish the video today but I don't want to push myself for fear of losing quality. If I can get it finished by the end of next weekend I'll be happy and that'll leave me with plenty of time to get the new video reviewed and sent off to a con or two.
  • And So It Begins...Again... 2002-05-25 21:38:10 Being one of the few who is out of school and actually gets a three day weekend during Memorial Day weekend I'm taking the extra time off to start up on the remake of my Drops of Sailor Jupiter video. Most of the faults with my first video could be, at least in part, be attributed to a lack of resources; namely having only one Sailor Moon DVD to capture footage from and having a small, laptop hard drive onto which to capture them on (laptop hard drive capture = poorer quality). Well I now own an 80GB firewire hard drive and the entire Sailor Moon S series on DVD so now I get to try again.

This weekend I just plan to capture footage from Sailor Moon R: The Movie (already done) and various scenes from the Sailor Moon S series (currently 1/3 done, still need finish watching DVDs 3-6 for good Makoto/Sailor Jupiter scenes. Once I've capture any and all possible scenes I could use in the video I'll import everything into my editor and start the fun part of the project.

In addition to the extra hardware I'll be making a few changes to how I go about this video. The biggest change is that I'll be making this video in MacOS X where my first version was done in MacOS 9.2.2 (Mac people know why this is a big deal). Secondly, I'm going to do my editing from beginning to end. Before I actually made the ending first, then the intro, then I just filled in the middle. Since the biggest area I've received complaints about is the middle (too many action scenes for the song) I'm hopeful that going from start to finish in addition to more "emotional" scenes will get rid of my video's weakest section.

I haven't decided on whether or not I'll make this second video public as soon as it is completed or not. I will definitely invite those who have given me much needed and helpful feedback on my first AMV to view the second version of the video but I may not make the video public until after AWA this year.

I guess we'll see how it easily things go now that I have some clue as to what I'm doing.
