JOURNAL: Red Wolf (Paul Quinnell)

  • Busy Day 2002-09-07 22:13:21 Got reservations made at KiKu for the Thursday night AMV dinner for AWA and information on the place online (including the menu, ack). Now it looks like I may be making a large sushi take out order for the AWA VAT staff who will miss the dinner. I wonder how my car will smell Friday morning going into work with the 5 plus people stuffed in there and enough sushi to feed a small AMV army.

I'm down to video 70 in my AWA Pro tapes. I should be finish and online making my nominations tomorrow. I will admit that I was expecting a lot better showing that I've seen on these tapes. My own video is by far no where near the quality I expected but I figured there would be 10% great videos, 10% bad videos, and 80% good videos. Not that many good videos and it isn't the great videos taking their place. I watched everything all the way through like I was suppose to but I found myself looking for the fast forward on way more videos than I would have liked.

Got my oil changed finally. Had to change the air filter too so that almost doubled my cost =P Oh well, payday is this Friday.

Emailed all but one of the AWA CD submitters (waiting for the last one's CD to arrive in the mail) to get info on their videos. Three out of the ten have already replied with the requested info which is great. That means that everyone might just reply before my new CD-RW arrives. I'm hopeful I can get everything together and all the text files typed up so that I get a day or two away from the CD before I have to start burning copies.

Sad part is I still have over half of my To Do list to do tonight and tomorrow *sigh*
  • Look Ma, No Mouse! 2002-09-06 21:01:02 Trackpad is working again =) The repair job also accidentally fixed a slight problem I was having with the AC plugin on my laptop too so I'm real happy. Best of all, it was free (have I recently stated that I love my job?).

I'm going to go ahead and get the 48x burner next Friday. I figured since I was willing to pay an extra $10 to get the burner in under a week I could fork out an extra $25 for the extra speed. Even if I never burn faster than 32x at least I'll have bragging rights and I won't need to upgrade for a while. I marvel at these manufactors who think the average computer user needs to burn CDs in less than five minutes and the customers who buy into it. Of well, at I'm getting my high end burner at a good price =)

I got another CD in the mail for the AWA CD today. Earlier this week I got a CD for the AWA CD in the mail postmarked from England (customs sticker and all). At the mail box I just thought that the Internet was so cool since that is the only way this thing is coming together. One last CD is on it's way to me. I'll be emailing the submitters for specific info on their videos for the CD's text file and, with any luck, I'll have the last videos and the text files for the videos ready to go by the time my new burner arrives. Then I get to burn who knows how many CDs in 9 days (so much for sleeping up for the con). Seriously though, this project is going well and hopeful the distribution will go equally well.

I'll be harassing the manager at Kiku tomorrow about having an AMV gathering at that Japanese resturant Thursday night before AWA (see the related thread on the Convention forum). I'm overly optimistic about getting our own area and control over one of the TVs in the place (not going to happen).

Man I've got way too much to do this weekend. How can one con which is 20 days away take up a month's worth of time?
  • New CD-RW? 2002-09-05 22:26:46 I'm looking at getting an external CD-RW. For the short term to help me burn those AWA CDs and for the long term...well let's say it would beat the 4x burner inside my iBook =P I'm debating between spending just over $100 for a 32x burner or spending $30 more for a 48x burner. Sure the 48x is faster but most of the media I buy is 16x-24x and I'm already looking at paying $20 instead of $10 for shipping so the thing arrives in 3 days instead of 6-7 days. Oh well, I'm going to wait till mid month anyway so plenty of time to decide. What I REALLY need right now is to finish those AWA Pro tapes.
  • Trackpad Update and More 2002-09-03 23:36:16 I love my job. All I'll say is I'm getting a new logic board installed in my iBook this week to fix my trackpad and I won't be losing any AWA money =) Normally I wouldn't have been in a rush to get the trackpad fixed since I use a two button USB mouse regularly but if I couldn't have a functional trackpad at AWA that would of been very annoying (you try finding a flat space large enough for the laptop and mouse instead of just using your lap in the VAT).

I love the Internet. Today in my mail box was a CD containing AMVs which was sent from England, through customs, straight to my apartment. The CD contains AMVs for the AWA CD I'm putting together. I just thought that without the web and this site that event would never have come close to happening. Who says the net is making us less social? Speaking of the AWA CD, I'm waiting on two last CDs to arrive in the mail and then the burning shall begin. Time to start borrowing the high speed burner from work.

Still have lots of stuff to do this week. I need to mail out my AWA Expo entries (I forgot today so I go from I know it'll arrive on time to it should arrive on time). I owe a submitter to the AWA CD detailed reviews of their videos. I need to finalize the AWA CD and make the disc images. Shoot, I better backup my system tonight just in case repairs go really, really badly. I still need to judge half of my AWA Pro videos and do the nomination thing. Ugh, I'm not going to have a free weekend this weekend, am I? I knew I should have gotten some sleep last night =P
  • Trackpad 2002-09-02 02:17:54 The trackpad on my iBook just went out. I opened up the case and found that the pins that connect the trackpad's ribbon to the logic board are all still connected to the ribbon...but not to the logic board =P After much playing I have come to the conclusion that I either need a damn good sodder (not going to happen) or a new logic board. Luckily I can get a new board at cost through work and looking through the instructions I think I can do the work myself. I replaced the hard drive a while back and that is considered a harder job on the iBook than replacing the logic board (although in all honest it involves the same component removal so I'd say it is an equally difficult job) so I shouldn't be out too much in the end. I'll still have some AWA spending money but now I'll be on a budget with AWA and no new DVDs until mid October. I usually use a small USB mouse with my iBook anyway but it is very nice to have the trackpad when the iBook is actually being used as a laptop so I'll probably go ahead and do the repair.
