AWA Report: AMV Dinner
2002-09-27 07:40:21
The dinner went great. We ended up with 28 people (more than I expected) and managed to get everyone squeezed into 5 vehicles and three Hibachi tables. The best part is we only ran 30 minutes all night long =) I met a lot of people I've wanted to meet but given the large social scene I wasn't too active in all of the conversations going on but at least now a know a lot of faces I can talk to over the weekend.
Thanks once again to everyone who came out to dinner.
Oh, and I finally got all of the CD sets finished last night and I even got a few handed out after the dinner.

The extra sleeves were never ordered! I just found out today that they only order the two boxes, not all four. Well they wouldn't get in until next week so I told them not to order them and now I have to shell out three times as much for them at Office Depot. Well for anyone worried about me making a profit there ya go.
Got the AWA VAT schedule. Looks like I will be living in the VAT room =)
Other crap happening at work. I'm really nervous about dinner going well tonight. Co-workers are threatening various unpleasantries if Friday goes just as bad and I'm off having fun at the con. Oh, and there are tornado warnings in my area which is right near the airport.

I love the little rolls the Atlanta Bread Company gives you with your salad. I actuall bought a salad and extra rolls for lunch and spent more time with the rolls.
As you can see I'm still up burning away. I'm working on the last 50 CDs right now. The bloody CD sleeves didn't come in today either. My co-workers were making simply hilarious jokes about me coming in Friday (despite having the day off), picking up the sleeves, and having to stuff 100 double sided sleeves in the show room. My luck that will really happen AND the customers wouldn't leave me alone enough to get it done. I think these purple CDs are starting to do something to me. That or the lack of sleep.
I need to call the Japanese restaurant tomorrow and confirm the reservation. I have an extra car lined up with a friend if needed but he's "not feeling good" so who knows now with that. If you're going to the dinner and have a car EMAIL ME! Make me feel better tomorrow, please. All I need is to show up tomorrow night and say, "Okay guys, we're walking."

Not counting the many people who posted they would attend dinner a few weeks ago I have 15 people confirmed for dinner. Six more...just six more and we get a private room and we all have a lot more fun (plus it makes me look good, too, hehe). I currently have guarenteed car space for 13 people so I need more cars. It is so close to AWA I'm not expecting to get any new dinner emails so hopefully people will just show up on time since the time and date has been set for a while. Well, we can always get creative with the transportation, I guess.
I'm actually burning CDs at work today. I'm only using my internal 4x burner since the FireWire CD-RW I've been using at home just takes up too much desk space and I really need to burn only as a background activity (since I actually work and all). I won't get many done but every bit helps me get to bed at a decent time tonight. I'm not expecting to have much burn time Thursday evening (see above) and I have 100 CDs left to go.
I did manage to stuff the 100 sleeves I got yesterday (rest should be here tomorrow) and I got my reserve copies labeled and set aside. After stuffing onto 50 of the sets I realized my box wasn't going to work so now I'll be carrying around a second bag which looks like a small, black sports bag and has Borland (as in the software company) written on the side. That thing is going to be heavy on Friday *sigh*

Is It Fate or Ego?
2002-09-24 17:37:02
I went to AWA last year. I wandered around alone, checked out the main video room, walked the dealers room, and left with just a Saturday visit. I didn't get into AMVs until 7 months ago. I have only produced two videos of okay quality. I don't have a sizable collection, or even knowledge base, of anime titles. I post on the AMV mail list and AMV.org board but I don't chat with a lot of the other people who make friends easily in this peer group. In all respects, this AWA being my first AMV con, I should be one of the small frys running around. And yet...
I am organizing the AMV dinner on Thursday. I'm doing this compilation CD which appears like it might actually be a big hit. I have two videos in three of the contests. One of the videos (I don't know how it did this) actually got nominated in the Pro contest. All this is starting to blow my mind. Now I'm really wondering did all this turn out as a twist of fate on various events or did I somehow orchastrate all of this to force attention upon myself. Maybe simply asking that question turns the answer more toward fate than ego (unless I like to see myself type, then that would be ego over fate).
My head hurts.
Oh well, I guess I'll just go with the flow and see how everything turns out. I'm going to be meeting a lot of cool people Thursday night and hopefully they will find me somewhat cool, too. And if they don't, well they all have to leave town on Sunday and I don't so =P
