JOURNAL: jal0021 (Jeff Lawson)

  • Well, maybe not... 2002-06-25 23:50:06 I think I'm going to have to shelve the Maison Ikkoku video for now...

The conceptual process has been an interesting ride. My original intent was to have the video focus on Kozue, seeing as the music fit her situation perfectly. That, and of all the characters in the series, she really got the shaft...moreso than Mitaka, I think. I figured she deserved a video. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough good Kozue footage to work with. She practically vanishes from the show for an extended period of time, and in the scenes where she does show up, she's far too happy for what was intended to be a bittersweet video.

After some more thought, though, and after listening to the song so many times I found myself humming it in its entirety every morning in the shower, I realized that I could create a similar video focusing on Yagami (Ibuki...not her Dad...although THAT would be interesting, too) instead. She really was my favorite character from Maison Ikkoku, and of the few MI videos I've seen, she doesn't even show up. Yet, she's a fairly important character, and she appears in about 20 episodes, many of which primarily focus on her.

So, I reworked the storyboard with Yagami in mind and started compiling source footage this morning, knowing that I had several days off this week to get some work done. I used the HK bootleg DVDs for source (yes, I know, I know...I don't advocate the purchase of bootlegs, but in the case of Maison Ikkoku, what else can you do? I'm willing to eschew ethics for the first show I truly fell in love with and consider my favorite even to this day. If Viz ever releases MI on DVD, I'll happily give them my money. Provided I'm not dead from old age, that is.). Anyhow, I decided to use the Avisynth/edit the VOBs within Premiere method since I've found it to work best with past projects.

But I hit a snag: some of you who have used this same method might have come across the discoloration problem that occasionally occurs when dealing with AVS files within Premiere...oddly colored blotches and the like. It's a known bug, and the only way around it is to pull the necessary clips from outside Premiere. It's not that big of a deal when you only have a couple of clips to worry about, but in this case, it was a VERY big deal as the discoloration was prevalent throughout the majority of the source footage. I'd say 80% of it is affected.

As a result, I'll have to sit down and map out each scene of the video so I can collect the clips from outside Premiere before I can start editing. Not much fun. Kind of took the wind out of my sails, to be honest.

Either way, I'll probably put the video aside for now and use my vacation to do something less eyestrain-inducing. Like catching up on this CD binder full of fansubs that demand my attention still...

  • Once upon a time, I drank a little wine 2002-06-18 22:54:12 I haven't touched this in awhile, have I?

The hosting situation is still a mess, even though I've moved and now have a new broadband provider. I'm going to see what I can do, though. I've been receiving a lot of e-mail lately regarding where my videos can be found (Sakura no Yume in particular)...if you take the time to e-mail me, I can be of assistance. That particular video is also available on Waldo's FTP is you have access.

    Moving on...

I haven't done any serious video work since finishing Sakura no Yume. There have been a few aborted projects, with technical issues and lack of time getting in the way. But, I have a little more time on my hands now and have taken care of those nagging technical problems (as well as picking up an extra 80 GB hard drive for fairly cheap, meaning I can tackle some even bigger projects now), so I've been getting the fever to create again. After toying around with some old ideas, I've decided to try something new.

I'm going to make a Maison Ikkoku video.

Seriously. I'm going to do something that I've long wanted to do, but figured I never would simply because of the amount of source material I'd have to deal with. But, I have the right music, a good, workable idea, and the will to do it. The only reason I haven't started editing already is because I'm currently in the midst of a run-through of the series and would like to finish it before capturing footage. I have about 30 episodes left, so with some marathon sessions over the next several days, I should be ready to get to work next week. That's fine, though, as it just gives me more time to work out the video in my head (and the extra time has already allowed me to stumble upon some great ideas).

    More later...

  • Whoops...I spoke too soon 2002-03-20 21:55:47 Perhaps there's something wrong with the FTP server after all. I just checked the log files and they ain't pretty.

I'm not sure what's going on yet. It works for some people, yet it doesn't work for others. It always works on my end, though, so that's why I was fairly oblivious to the problem until now.

Unfortunately, I don't have any solid ideas as to the culprit yet.

If I don't figure it out soon, I'll just disable the downloads for the time being.
  • There must be something in the water... 2002-03-20 20:18:57 Sakura no Yume is up to 138 downloads less than one day after being released. Once again, I'm amazed at the response.

Unfortunately, it's putting a strain on my FTP server. I'm finally getting some dreaded link problem reports, all from anonymous proxy users. I'm not sure what their problem is...my guess is that there just weren't any slots open on the FTP. It's hard to believe that 10 people (which is the limit) could be downloading the video at the same time, though.

Anyway, it's running fine every time I check on things. I can't fix something that's not broken!

  • Sakura no Yume 2002-03-19 23:01:45 And the new video is now available:

    http://www.animemusicvideos.org/video.php?v=6872

For quick reference, the source anime is Cardcaptor Sakura, and the source music if Yasashisa no Tane, from the Cardcaptor Sakura soundtrack. It really was the perfect song for the video.

Comments and opinions are more than welcome. I'd love to hear how others interpret the story within.
