I'd like to thank the Academy...

Yes, I'm still alive. No, I don't have any new videos. No, I'm not working on anything. Yes, I'm thinking of starting back up again. No, I'm not making any promises. Yes, I'll be at A-Kon.
Good batch of videos in this year's VCA, by the way. Playground Love, Mad World, Evolution, Elvis v. Anime...and especially The World She Knows, which, while not a "gee whiz, look at that!" sort of video, works very, very well.

So Darn Hot
2003-08-04 17:18:59
I've really been out of the AMV loop lately. I even forgot to make my second scheduled pledge payment at the beginning of July, so I don't have access to local downloads for the time being. The money's not in my monthly budget for August, so it'll have to wait until September. Sorry about that, Phade.
Anyway, I haven't worked on anything for awhile. I did try to make some progress on Blue Skies, but didn't have much luck. To be honest, I have little interest in working on that video right now, so I'm going to delete the source footage (finally), backup the project files somewhere, and let it lay dormant until I feel like finishing it.
I didn't submit anything for AWA Pro. I'm guessing about a kajillion videos were submitted anyway, so I figure it's no big deal. Actually, I'm not too excited about submitting videos to contests anymore. Too many finicky audiences and poorly run programs. I'd rather stick with reaching online audiences; that way, I know the person watching my video has made a conscience choice to watch it. I'm not boring someone to death with a heavy drama video when all they want is Excel lip-syncing to death metal.
That, and I'm lazy.
So, with Blue Skies going on the long-term backburner, I can finally focus on some ideas that have been bouncing about in my head over the past few months. Except, I'm not. Instead, I'm focusing on an idea that's been bouncing about in my head only a day or two.
I picked up the Alien Nine DVD last week on a whim, and really loved it. The short OAV series has enormous AMV potential due to the way many of the shots were composed and animated. So, I started brainstorming for music to use, but hit a brick wall. Nothing seemed to capture the feel of the show very well. In cases where I managed to find lyrics that worked well, the music didn't feel right. In cases where I found suitable music, the lyrics didn't fit. I had just about given up on the idea...
Then, last night, while doing some work, I was listening to the ED theme from the series. The whole time, I was thinking "Man, this song really fits the series perfectly".
*DING*
So, I think I'm going to try something traileresque (think a extended, deeper version of "After the Rain") with the ED theme. Yes, I know that breaks some unwritten AMV "rules", but bah...whatever. I look back at all the videos I've done up this point, and each is unconventional in some way. And with enough people making videos nowadays to fill Yankee Stadium, I figure there's plenty of room for those who want to do things a little differently.
We'll see how it goes...

Summer Doldrums
2003-07-11 20:58:17
I haven't had any time to edit lately. Thus, Blue Skies definitely won't be ready in time for AWA.
To make matters worse, I don't even want to work on it. It's weird. The video is 1/3 done, it's storyboarded out to the end, and what's been done so far looks great. It lacks something, though...I'm not sure why, but I haven't been able to develop any connection with the video. I want to finish it, of course, because it seems like a waste to let the concept and work already done go to waste - not because I necessarily have any emotional attachment to it.
If that doesn't make sense, don't worry. Basically, I'm not "psyched" enough about it to want to do the work. It doesn't seem like it would be any fun.
Anyway, I have more time to edit now, and the "bug" is getting to me. I'm running short on ideas, though. Or, rather, I have ideas, but none are screaming at me as of yet - or I'm not ready to work on them yet. I'm tempted to do something similar to "After the Rain", just for kicks. Something short, simple, and fun. Nothing that requires an incredible amount of work or conceptualization. Just an excuse to set some anime to music.
Guess I should sit down with my CD collection for a little bit and see if anything jumps out at me.

Aloha

I've been lurking in the shadows lately, it would seem.
Actually, I was just busy with chase season (http://www.jefflawson.net), and now that Summer has finally taken hold, I may once again turn my attention to pursuits unrelated to water vapor.
Of course, I've been too busy to do any video work. Blue Skies pretty much looks the same as it did the last time I updated this journal. With the AWA Pro submission deadline still over a month away, it should be finished in time - however, if not, I'll likely be submitting Haruka's Song in its place.
Oh, and I've made Elevator Music available for download once again. I removed the link awhile back when I was hurting for bandwidth, but now that Local downloads are handling much of the traffic from the .org, I have bandwidth to spare. Seriously...I'm only moving about 300 MB/day now. It's ridiculous.
And that reminds me...my next donation installment is due in a couple of weeks...
