Tooting other people's horns (Just remember to clean the mouthpiece before and after!)

EK: Don't rate yourself so low on "Failed Experiments". Even though you wrote that it was completed with little effort, you more than cover the four other variables I mentioned:
Ambition - even though it may have been "on a whim" and and "a joke spoken as an aside", you stuck with it and executed it with...
Skill - Nobody is going to dispute the quality your artwork which shows your...
Creativity - which was deftly applied to "Failed Experiments" to make it... Innovative.
I have a pretty good idea why you're in the VCA finals. Simply put, lots of people REALLY LIKE your AMV! It's kind of hard to fight the crowds behind this. Just go with it ^.^
And you know I'm being honest now, because I've had a decent amount of rye and ginger ;)

I've found out why the AMVdotORG VCA was making me feel uneasy....
So, now I'm going to write something that won't sit well with a number of people. So what. They should re-read this journal entry title.
The AMVs that are in the final vote segment of the AMVdotORG VCA awards are there because they BLOODY WELL DESERVE TO BE THERE!
All those AMVs are the product of AMV producers who have demonstrated ambition, skill, creativity, innovation and effort that is above and beyond. Those producers are not there because they are rich, lucky or powerful. Their AMVs are being celebrated in the VCA for one good, solid reason...because they are some of the best ones.
Complaining isn't going to change the fact that some people can create moving, beautiful, astonishing works of art from what the general public would call Pop Culture.

Caveat Emptor, Part 2
2002-02-07 01:03:38
Well, just as I thought. No warranty for the MoBo, but at least the seller is willing to give back half the money and I keep the board - just to save his ass in the eBay ratings. Maybe I'll unleash the mad SMD soldering skills I developed during my stint as an electronics repair troll at my first job and be able to save the board. Or maybe not....
...simply because I have an electrical service substation and distribution design project due this evening and I still haven't got the luminarie and symbol schedules drawn up yet -_-* Looks like I'll be working into the wee hours of the morning 'til I drop, only to be up for work at 7am -_-*
THE AMVdotORG VCA awards - I've got this ugly mixture of equal parts of guilt and thrill in my gut right now. I don't know why, but the feeling's there. It's a really strong and sour one '_' Maybe I'll figure it out while trying to drown it in coffee just to stay awake.

Caveat Emptor
2002-02-06 00:49:51
eBay...need I say more >.<
The motherboard that I got in the auction...Damaged!
Pins 169-171 of the *ntel PCI southbridge IC are sheared right off the IC and pins 168 & 172 FUBARed! ;_; The witness marks on the IC show that someone slipped with a sharp object and pierced the pins. (and it wasn't ME!) -_-*
I just fired off a terse, yet polite e-mail to the seller with pics, asking for an explanation, but I'm not too enthusiastic about the outcome.
Geez. I've eBayed (a verb?) many a time without a single problem and now this! Who knows what's going to happen, but this is a major Quckup in creating the new FTP_BuckarooBanzai V2.0

for about 15 days now!
...An adequate quote from "Bones" McCoy of Star Trek to describe the current situation of FTP_BuckarooBanzai. Basically, the software has outpaced the hardware. I installed RedHat Linux 7.2 successfully, but with so little processor (486DX2-66) and memory (24MB) it's still too easy to max out the load averages in the testing I've done. I've also had enough of jumping through hoops to get the CD-ROM to work with the MoBo's ancient BIOS >.<!
So began my quest for the assembly of FTP_BuckarooBanzaiV2.0!
Looking around the local computer stores (junk dealers, rebuilders, parts, new, etc.) was nothing more than a headache waiting to happen. With a budget of C$150 and a bunch of greedy dealers charging unrealistic prices for used parts, the situation looked grim. So I became an eBay whore (yes, it can be cheap if you don't get desperate) for the past week and managed to score some decent parts for realistic prices.
For a total of C$131/US$82, FTP_BuckarooBanzaiV2.0 will be sporting the following:
- AMD K6-2 550MHz (New!)
- Asus P55T2P4 MoBo V3.1 (New! An old school socket 7 overclockers dream!)
- 128MB 60ns EDO RAM (New!)
- 2.1 GB Maxtor ATA66 (from the old FTP)
- Cirrus Logic 6054GL 4MB Video card (again from the old FTP. Do really you need a GeForce for this application?)
- SoHo 10/100 NIC (old FTP)
Too bad the new setup won't fit the old AT case, so for the sake of being cheap, I'm mounting it on a good ol'chunk o'wood. Ghetto, you say? I agree, but it works.
If all goes well (I've said that before _how_ many times?) FTP_BuckarooBanzaiV2.0 should be up and running next weekend!
