    Having a Bad Day? The average cost of rehabilitating a
    seal after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $80,000.
    At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved
    animals were being released back into the wild amid cheers
    and applause from onlookers. A minute later, in full view,
    a killer whale ate them both.

    Still think you are having a bad day? A woman came home to
    find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, almost
    in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from his
    waist towards the electric kettle. Intending to jolt him
    away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy
    plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places. Up to that
    moment, he had been happily listening to his Walkman.

    STILL think you're having a bad day? Two animal rights
    protesters were protesting at the cruelty of sending pigs
    to a slaughterhouse in Bonn, Germany. Suddenly, all two
    thousand pigs broke loose and escaped through a broken
    fence, stampeding madly. The two hopeless protesters were
    trampled to death.

    What?! STILL having a bad day? Iraqi terrorist Khay Rahnajet
    didn't pay enough postage on a letter bomb. It came back with
    "return to sender" stamped on it. Forgetting it was the bomb,
    he opened it and was blown to bits. There now, feeling better?

    anyway...::big evil grin:: time for some funny shit.......^_^ "from the mouths of babes" as my teacher would often say.....

    All good advice for those preparing the take the plunge:

    HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?
    You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like,
    if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports,
    and she should keep beer & peanuts coming.
    * Alan, age 10

    No person really decides before they grow up who they're
    going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get
    to find out later who you're stuck with.
    * Kirsten, age 10

    WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
    Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person
    FOREVER by then.
    * Camille, age 10

    No age is good to get married at. You got to be a fool to
    get married.
    * Freddie, age 6 (Very wise for his age)

    HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?
    You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be
    yelling at the same kids.
    * Derrick, age 8

    WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?
    Both don't want any more kids.
    * Lori, age 8

    WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
    Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to
    get to know each other. Even boys have something to say
    if you listen long enough.
    * Lynnette, age 8 (Isn't she a treasure?)

    On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that
    usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.
    * Martin, age 9

    WHAT WOULD YOU DO ON A FIRST DATE THAT WAS TURNING SOUR?
    I'd run home and play dead. The next day I would call all
    the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all
    the dead columns.
    * Craig, age 9

    WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?
    When they're rich.
    * Pam, age 7

    The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to
    mess with that.
    * Curt, age 7

    The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should
    marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do.
    * Howard, age 8

    IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
    I don't know which is better, but I'll tell you one thing.
    I'm never going to have sex with my wife. I don't want to
    be all grossed out.
    * Theodore, age 8

    It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need
    someone to clean up after them.
    * Anita, age 9 (Bless you, child!)

    HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED?
    There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there?
    * Kelvin, age 8

    And the #1 Favorite is.......

    HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?
    Tell your wife that she looks pretty even if she looks like
    a truck.
    * Ricky, age 10

  • {O_O} 2003-01-16 23:27:54 wow......

    lol!

    just....wow.... O_O

    i just learned the greatest thing about my heritage that i hadn't known before. i've never felt to enlightened about who i was, what it meant to be a filipina, and where i came from. i mean, back home, i was highily involved in the filipino community there but it was more focused on bringing some filipino heritage to modern america and having pride in our traditions and folk culture. what i learned today enlightened me more about my past and how far the filipinos today came from the filipinos of yesterday. i always valued my culture and learned what i could..but this new class on asian am studies has brought me to a whole different level. lol...i've never felt so proud.

    anyway....we watched a film called "Spirits Rising", which was about the filipines greatest internal struggle; the Marcos and Aquino election in 1986. it showed the historical climax of the event and the hardships that many filipinos faced to gain their self awareness and it showed the results, which was pretty awe inspiring for me. i was just born when B. Aquino was assassinated....which triggered the Marcos and Aquino elections. And i hadn't been fully aware of how powerful that event had been becuase my parents never talked about it. though they mentioned the people several times (Fidel Ramos, Emelda Marcos, Ferdinand Marcos, Corazon Aquino...) i hadn't realized that they were very important ppl in the early 80's. but what really got me was the historical aspect of the film. also, the aspect of the film that focused on the power that women held.

    before the spanish rule, women ruled the islands. there were women called babaylan, which is pretty much the equivilant of a witch-doctor. but these women were sort of like...the ruler. they healed, fortold the future and wat not, performed ceremonial rituals to idols and such....they were the ones you came to when something was going to happen or when you wanted something to happen....sort of like a governor and a psychic all in one.

    in the film there was a legend, a story, a myth, however you wanted to call it. in the begining of time/life...man and woman were created and sprang forth at the same time from bamboo reeds. man was a beautiful creature and a bird was jealous so it flew down and started pecking on man. he was strong and endured it. but when woman saw the bird she sat up and plucked the birds tail and it flew away. then it was said that when a woman died....her soul would return to the black lake (? iforgot...some dark watered river)...and there would be a bridge there that she would have to cross. it said that a man who loved her would be there to help her cross to the other side. so women took on many lovers. i just straight up dropped my jaw. i couldn't believe that women back in ancient were so different from the ones today. i'll explain later. anyway.....women actually prefered to have less children. because all of thier wealth would be divided amongst the children so "why have everyone poor when you can have one child and leave him/her well off." 0_o its weird cuz my mom talks like that. she keeps saying when she dies everything she has will be split between me and my brother and so forth.

    anyway...(face if...if you're still reading this you're recieving an introductory course in filipino american history for which you are recieving no credit for....) so in comes the spanish rule and they see the female dominant culture and babaylans and they just basically shit in thier pants. the see the women as unpure becuase women right and left are taking lovers like nothing and are not being punished for it because....that was the way of thier life. mothers encouraged their daughters to follow. men didn't worry about thier wives being virgins and wat not. and another thing was....the husband always sided with his wife and his wife's family. even against the word of his own. the society was female dominant.

    o_0 kinda makes me think more about how the head of my family is my mom....and how i lead an all male pirate man-ho ship where i'm the damn pimp...the alpha....the leader and wat not. it was like a damn freakin light came on in my head. O_O

    anywya....the spanish shit in their pants and totally tried to change everything. they brought education....their eurpean male based social structure....and religion. filipino culture changed right then and there. women at that time basically had three options in life....join a convent, marry and support their husband/keep the house/give children, or forever be a house ridden and stick to sewing and thread work. = i said...."oh hell no...."

    so up comes this rebellion and this guy gets killed. his wife is wild spirited and instead of grieving she sets up a geurellia(sp?) and starts rebelling against the spanish rule...going from village to villiage and regaining their independence from the spanish. the men said she had magical powers that allowed the men to be invincible from teh spanish attack....but i think it was her courageous spirit that inspired the rebellion and the winning. anyway...she wasnt' so invincible cuz she was captured and hanged as a witch. but she was greatly respected by the filipino people.

    1946 was when america came in and gave the filipinos greater education and encouraged women to speak their mind and grow more independent and proud. guess wat? damn right they did. their spirits grew stronger.

    i have to write a paper about this so i better straighten my thoughts out now. anywya....wat all this leads to is the modern day philippines where were trying to gain our independence from spain and from america and at the same time settle our own governmental political disputes about a terrible dictator (Ferdinand Marcos). and basically this guy is as chauvanistic as they come and a power monger. he wants to stay president of PI (PI= philippines) and tries to do so at all costs. B. Aquino comes back to PI from 3 yrs of exhile and right when he lands at the manila airport he is assassinated. and this started teh rebellion to the Marcos dictatorship. a small group of women made a ralley. but marcos didn't pay much attention to them cuz he thought they weren't a big threat. but wat really pissed me off was when he said "women should remain in the home and not get involved in things they don't understand such as politics." this pissed off even more ppl and soon the ralley became a national out cry against marcos.

    now guess wat happens. Marcos recognizes that the ppl are unsatisfied and the womens group are a force to be reconed with. so he says...ok...we'll hold an election. me against your candidate and we'll see who wins. B.Aquino....the guy that gets shot (he was VP i think...) well his wife, C.Aquino was nominated to represent the ppl. ^_^ and more then ever the woman's voice was heard.

    then there was all this drama about riots and abuse. ppl beign taken in becuase of their support to C.Aquino instead of Marcos. the election day came and there was drama about the polls being tampored with. the outcome was that marcos was the elect...but the ppl named Aquino the elect. the ppl's voice was so great that even marcos' cheif council rebelled and instead of Marcos inaugural speech being aired...it was Aquinos and the ppl cheered. when marcos found out....he left the palace and went to america. but after all that....i dont' think he was bad. becuase they interviewed his wife....Emelda Marcos. and she told wat happened the moment they left the palace. she said marcos turned to her and said "it's your fault." and she asked why. he said.."its your fault....because you gave me a woman's heart. A heart to see wat was right and beautiful." becuase he opted to leave and save the ppl of PI instead of rebuke and send the PI army and airforce to bomb the rebelling group (which consisted of men, woemn and children tired of the dictatorship.)....thank god at the last minute he was willing to have mercy and think of his people instead of power and leadership.

    lol....wat enthralled me the most was the social structure. m/^_^ women ruled!!! we may have been quieted down for a couple centuries....but its our spirit that ruled the islands! ::shakes fist:: =P its no wonder many filipino families today the head of teh house hold is the woman. though....when inter-racial marriages happen....its not always like that. bah....anyway...i just couldnt' help but feel so moved after watching that film. and after class i was walking home and i just felt my spirit so energized and happy. its been a long while since my spirit was happy. past couple weeks i just couldn't help but feel so....spiritually depressed. i mean its one thing to be happy and have a good time with your friends and all...but its another thing when your spirit isn't happy with you. you'll try to ignore it when you're around friends and tryign to have a good time...but it's always there and can't be over looked when you're alone and in deep thought. but anyway....i is pretty happy now.....

    O_O so i guess i should go study then. damn...i better get an A on this damn paper. LOL! not due for some 15 days but i still want to get an A. i need to kick my gpa big time.

    0_o damn....if this isn't the longest journal entry i've ever written....shit....never knew i had it in me. LOL! now why can't i be this dedicated to writting something down when it comes to essays. -_-; oi....

    anywya....^_^ if you've read this far....damn congratu-fuckin-lations you've just recieved and passed an arbitrary introductory course in filipino history. ^_^ you should be damn proud if you made it this far in this journal entry. -_- but i doubt many will care to read.

    0_o you know this helps a lot in structuring my thoughts and sorts....i should do this more often. not to entertain you all...but to help me. yeah maybe it'll help....
