iMovie Guide
2004-06-29 13:56:48
I updated my iMovie AMV guide today. You can view it here:
http://www.saphiria.net/h/amv/tutorial.html
It includes some various tips in trying to get around Apple's iMovie.
I also mailed out a copy to the AMV org admin so I'm not sure when a local copy is going up yet but I sure hope this tutorial helps out someone on the Mac platform.

Buying DVDs and Bootlegs
2004-06-28 00:35:56
While working on my next AMV, which is about Avenger, I had a hard time trying to figure out which of the scenes to use because the fansub had various blocky distortions ... I can probably get away with JPEG-like artifaces if I could find ways to work around it but image corruption is another deal all together. It's like it's been selectively placed there.
But then again, it just goes to show what happens when you use fansubs ... it's just risks you have to take.
Anyway, I decided to hunt for the DVD somewhere. I liked the anime in a way so I figured I should own a DVD version. The fansubs were burned on a DVD-RW disc and I could always use a spare blank DVD. The anime hasn't been licensed by any US company (at least not yet anyway) so I wouldn't expect a Region 1 version to be floating around. I've ran into a few copies of it on eBay but I was a bit skeptical because they were are all Multi-region. The feedback didn't help me much because they were in the 95+ percent range, but the amount of episodes per disk seems acceptable from a technical standpoint but marketing wise ... that's a different issue but on Neowing, it looks like 2 episodes per disc running at almost 6000 yen a piece is in circulation ... I didn't run into a compilation like the one on eBay with 8 on the first and 5 on the second disc.
Well ... I guess it's just something to think about ... bootlegs have always had a piece of skepticsm in my head but after having troubles understanding the subtitles on previous bootlegs that I got from raffles and other local gatherings, seems to me I would be better off watching a fansub if no Region 1 discs were available. Hmm ... I guess if I ever find a Region 2 store that sells cheap, I might consider it.
It's 12:30 AM and I need some sleep ... I'm just a bit frustrated at the moment. Maybe I'll start on a different video tomorrow if I can't seem to get this to go well ...

First Note
2004-06-27 14:56:05
After I finished my first video, it made me think about it a little harder. Maybe it's the Overlap transition that I abused or maybe that Flash one quite a bit or maybe the length of each cut scene. I've seen my brother, Phill <http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_myprofile.php?user_id=183385>, make some videos and I have noticed he uses some shorter scenes, not necessarily in chronological order but just scenes to get by.
I also learned another thing ... don't use a Linkin Park or Evanescence song ... Maybe it's the underground bias towards the Top 40 rock bands or something ... not that it means anything to me since I rarely listen to American music but I think it has something to do with being described as 'over-rated' or something.
For my next video, I figured I should use a song that's more upbeat and aggressive. Hopefully, I won't abuse the Flash transition this time. Right now, I counted only 1 Flash but I'm only half-way through the song.
I also need to find a less cheesier way to cover up the subtitles (or find a way to get access to the DVDs).
Hmm ....
