JOURNAL: Mechaman (Scott Francis)

  • a symphony of bullets? 2001-12-11 22:42:37 Rebus: Yup. The Opera for HL(addressed opera.redeemedsoft.com respectfully) is indeed your big bad voodoo daddy, and I encourage anyone who's remotely sick of Counter-Strike to try it. NOW. We'll wait.
No more snipers or worrying about frag-fests--it's all about _how_ you do it, rather than the number of times. About the only complaint is that _really_ weird things start happening if ping times go up; but that doesn't lessen the fun factor.

  • "you're empty, mr. anderson." "so are you." 2001-12-11 20:10:40 EK: Probably because the 941 has sec-say lines. Remember--as long as it looks cool, nothing else matters.
God help us, The Opera plans on adding Jerichos in the next revision. They've already got vintage CZ-75s so you can pretend you're Rally Vincent*.

*Despite the lack of female character models.

  • "Where's he going?" "The same place we all are. Forward." 2001-12-02 04:29:05 It always seems the same; everytime I've left a school, whether it's an official one, or someplace I've learned, even martial arts. Everytime you leave a place you've known for a long time for somewhere new, it always feels like the "ending" of something. But when you get there, you realize that things always have to end, and that it isn't really an "ending" in the time sense. It's just another step--as said in the most unlikely of places--forward. You can't go somewhere new without leaving someplace else behind. The worst sin that any piece of media can commit IMHO, is to stay where it is and never take a step beyond, if only to clear the path for others. Just look at the X-Files.
If I get to realize a personal dream and make original media for other people, it is my fondest wish that none of them will ever commit that sin(and is already an ideal I hold to when making videos). I want to make sure that all of my work never leaves someone saying "why did I even bother watching that?"

Endings aren't that bad, either. I slog through repetitive anime, while people why I can sit still and watch it. And my answer is: because the ending is usually worth it. Whether it's Macross 7, Tenshi Ni Narumon!, Saber Marionette J, Vandread, Battle Atheletes, or Noir; the mid-part and ending make up for everything else. A great ending is worth more to me than ten great openings. Something that most people just don't seem to understand...but does it matter? If you are personally satisfied that your time wasn't wasted, do you need anything else?

Phew--philosophy, so sudden? OK, here's gamer talk to make up for it: The Opera for Half-Life has singlehandedly redeemed my faith in online FPS gaming(after Counter-Strike erased it). No longer is it about how many people you can kill without being killed; it is about how you do each one, and taking the fight as best you can. No rock-steady sniper rifles or quick rocket triggers will win your glory--to prove yourself, you must be in harm's way every single second, with a devil-may-care grin and two fists of pistolized, personal, fury.

Killing and dying are easy. It's arranging the bodies that's hard.

(and if you read this far, you get a treat: http://www.wsu.edu/~mechaman/ryd-fold.jpg, http://www.wsu.edu/~mechaman/lastfold.jpg, http://www.wsu.edu/~mechaman/meg-fold.jpg. SEE! Scott's lack of a figure drawing class! FEEL! Scott's second time ever computer-coloring! GROAN! At the blatant references and in-jokes blearily that take the place of thoughtful content! MST3K! As much as you want!)
  • "Is it possible to stop the Con-Human computer, which joined forces with human clones?" 2001-11-22 02:55:00 A quick videogame update: saw and tinkered with GameCube and Xbox. GC is small small in size; they should be pimping Super Monkey Ball and Rogue Squadron like there's no tomorrow; those two games will sell a lot of systems. Xbox..yes, the rumors are true; you could kill babies by dropping the controller on them, and the sucker itself resembles a small suitcase. Didn't see Halo, but Mad Dash might have some merit. I'm only waiting to see Jet Set Radio Future and Gun Valkyrie anyways--note those two are by Smilebit. Detect a pattern?
Really want to play MGS2--but for the plot, not gameplay. The original MGS kinda disappointed me when I noticed that Kojima cribbed a lot of situations out of the original MG2: Solid Snake. Make no mistake though, Kojima is a mucho talented writer/director. Since I have about six more reasons to finish my DC collection/obtain a DC before I obtain a PS2 and MGS2, it'll be a while.

Oh yes; I should offer the chance to see my old CG work before I start trashing it for a new design; http://www.wsu.edu/~mechaman/animation.html. The fighters are intended for an overhead Soukyugurentai/ESP.Ra.De-inspired shooter that I'll eventually finish..although I need to send them through a major redesign. And don't rush to tell me that "Lonely Duel" is awkward as hell--I know, I know. Let this be a lesson: don't waste your month farting around taking your sweet time modeling something that should have been better designed a week ago, and doing the animation(via _F_K, no surprise!)/rendering in a night or two. Grar!

  • "I'm not useless!" "I'm not cute." "I'm not Rappaport!" 2001-11-20 22:06:47 It's always relaxing to come home and not have to read the 'Net for a few days..then get sucked back in with fresh eyes. Not having 'Net access 24/7 does tend to force you away from reading websites every waking minute.
Saw quota of movies; Monsters Inc., Harry Potter(both excellent, but kids movies). From Hell is out of theaters already, so I'll have to wait for its video(that and The One; I refuse to waste even matinee price on it) to annoy the elitist whiners.
I was a bad boy and read a buncha graphic novels in Borders the other day; The Coffin and Heavy Liquid(witness aforementioned whiners arrive to insist that I should be reading more "worthwhile" comics like Ghost World and Watchmen, and the GN of From Hell instead). Man, the pseudo-underground comic scene seems to be a lot better than when I remember it. Or maybe it's just because Hollywood just seems like a cornucopia of SUCK(Joe Somebody, anyone?) these days. Waking Life was worth going to see, if only for the animation, however. All I need to make me a happy man is to catch up on DC's Hitman...
The only bummer now is that I'm getting bored of the PSX games I have here...soon, I tell myself, soon I can pick up a Dreamcast once I get a job. If I get a job. I hate this situation--a graduating student with not a lot to show, and no real industry experience. Where the hell does "the industry" get new people if they don't take anyone without "two years of professional experience"?
    Must...chant..Tony..White...mantras...again!
