SHOCK HORROR.
2002-01-26 15:55:29
Well, it's been a busy week.
-W00t. Over a thousand views on I'll Probably Survive. Of course, the latter ones are people from the nominations, complaining that the download is no longer there.
-Metropolis is quite touching, and its "Tintin-like visuals"(as say the Seattle papers) hide the fact that it's unbelievably well animated. Plus we even got it subtitled.
-Went to a panel at the Superflat art show in Seattle. Panel consisted of a head writer for Wired(presiding the panel), a translator who'd done work for Square, one of the CG heads in the UW Comp. Sci. department, and a designer from Tokyo. Didn't learn much that I didn't already know(they concentrated more on CG graphics and Japanese cultural weirdities), but it was funny as hell to learn that the writer's favorite video game was Space Channel 5. Got to see clips of Rez in action as well.
-I'm going to do an entry for the 2002 F1 Blender contest(http://www.seesystems.com/f1/). I figured I should expand my horizons of designing other things. Although speaking of art, I need to light a fire under my own ass to do that parody Bebop giftart I keep planning for EK. Plus there's cel-shading to get into with BMRT..ah...too much to do.

The new design for Now Loading finally goes live. V3 hasn't switched the mode back to popups, so users using the welcome.to/nowloading address may find things working rather strange.
Incidentally, for EK and other professional artists, do you ever have family members trying to dictate your site? My mom took one look and immediately got on my case for making such comments in the gallery as "I need to practice some more figure drawing" and "I got paranoid about IK, so I did it all in FK", saying that hirers would look down on it. She also demanded that I put clarification on the Links page..after she'd clicked the "Links" link.
I think the only thing I've really taken to heart in the past month is that I need to move out. Quickly.
'Course, I can't until I get a job...sigh.
Oh well. I guess I'll have to cope with late-night Dreamcast sessions. Oh, Jet Set Radio, why must you haunt my dreams?

OH. MY. GOD. I just watched Shaolin Soccer at the ADP meeting earlier tonight.
COPULATING AWESOME.
Mad props for using CG pretty inconspicously*.
..maybe it's just me.
To keep the crowd entertained, they threw in Odorikuruu as a half-time show. I was entertained by some show-off trying to name all the shows used, and failing badly(substituting Maze for Fam&Ihrie, and guessing that Hummingbirds was Fancy Lala).
*in the sense of a martial arts movie; god forbid a soccerball becoming a living tiger of flame should be inconspicous in real life.

EK: isn't it? One Piece is a hoot to read. I hope it didn't fall into the Kenshin-pattern of endless repetition as it went on; I know that most of it was done before the TV show started, so possibly that'll keep it on track.
And yes, Sanji is cooler-than-thou. I won't spoil as to how exactly the crew meets him...
Grar. I've had a hankering for arcade top-down blast-em-ups on the PC, but nothing seems to satisfy. I've been trying to satisfy it with Expendable, but as most people know, the controls and camera in that game DRIVE STRONG MEN MAD. I'd love a PC equiliavent of Devil May Cry, or a souped up Chaos Engine, but so far noone wants to deliver anything other than more FPSs or RTS. Bastard PC game companies that don't want to take chances..

So I lied. Or something. Don't ask if you don't know, in either case.
Instead, I'd like to talk about TV shows. Having been at college, I tend not to watch much of anything unless the laundry's in.
Law&Order: My parents have been addicted to this for years now, and I regularly watch. However, there's so damn much of it now, you can't flick the TV on without hitting one of 'em. SVU is somewhat disturbing; Criminal Intent's characters I just don't dig.
Futurama is still funny as hell. Why Fox, whyever did you drag back the "All Your Base" joke when you were doing so well with the 80's videogame culture references?(I lost it when Fry slams in his Rush tape and "Tom Sawyer" starts up)
24 looked interesting, but there's no way you can keep track of anything without having caught it from the beginning.
Alias is great fun, but I keep missing episodes. I'm hoping we'll see more "continuing-plot" shows on US TV; I'm getting tired of one-shot wonders.
(New) The Outer Limits: I dunno, Sci-Fi's boast of "all new original!" is kinda falling flat. Every "new" episode I've seen has had a strong amount of past-show clips to serve as retcons(and Star Trek actors showboating). Really kind of dissappointing, considering where they went in the first few seasons on Showtime.
The Chronicle: Only seen two episodes so far, but it's got some chemistry. I get the impression that they wanted the female reporter to click with the rest, but she just seems annoying than anything. The main reporter and the camera guy have a lot more witty dialog. Plus there's the entertaining histories of Sal and the publisher..
Special Unit 2: Even though it's a UPN show(and even though it shares a lot of atmosphere with The Chronicle), it's actually pretty good. The two main characters have Chemistry, with that capital C. Troll-boy's just kinda funky, though.
Invisible Man: At first, I-Man was kinda formulaic. It still is, mind you, but they've loosened up a lot on the characters. Great fun to watch(especially with all the work they manage to wring out of the invisibility shtick), a shame it's getting canceled.
In conclusion: I want my Lexx and Farscape back, you overbearing Sci-Fi bastards. I don't want John Edward's lame party tricks taking up the showing schedule. It's almost as bad as the flood of Psychic Friends commercials when SFN first started.
