JOURNAL: MistyCaldwell (Misty Caldwell)

  • Finally, a day off and a movie 2003-04-11 22:30:05 I saw the cine-documentary "Ghosts of the Abyss" today. I was blown away. Anyone who likes maritime hostory, the Titanic, or is interested in 1900's history should see it if they can!

It's in 3-D, and only playing on IMAX or large format theaters so it may not be available to everyone. There isn't much plot to it, as it is still a documentary but parts of it are obviously planned if not scripted.

All the shots of the poor Titanic are real though. It's incredible to see it looking very much like it's true size coming out of the darkness, even in it's decaying state. It's as close to actually being there as many many people will ever get. Two miles under the ocean exploring a part of humanity...a graveyard and a memorial...it's powerful.

It came from a turning point in history and has a tie in that not many people knew about (but if you see it after reading this, you'll know what I am talking about) but that is striking and perhaps unexpected...even for those who knew of the actual expedition.

...I never cried while watching the movie 'Titanic'. I liked it, but not for it's story. After watching the 'Titanic' movie, I eventually did shed a choked up tear in the scenes involving Andrews, the band, and the dead body scene. That was as real event in my mind as any, and I felt so bad for the people who died.

But in the "Ghosts of the Abyss', I cried a lot, not making sobs or anything, but tears rolling down my cheecks. It started at the scene where Astor gave his 5 month pregnant, newly married wife over to the life bost through a window...into a lowering boat. He meekly asked if he could go along, but was denied. The scene felt so real...be it the IMAX's incredible screen, the 3-D real aspect of it, or just that this focused on hostory and not a shred of fiction.

The people who felt that fear and died were real and their pain and fear (though long faded) were real...and I felt it. I didn't stop through the card scene, not until the boat was gone and they returned to mere documentary style again. I cried a lot...human life is a fluke to me...an important special gift to experience joy and life but once...I am saddend when any life is cut short or when people must be made to suffer.

    ...

I guess that means the movie was good. It was great.

The only bad part was Bill Paxton's annoying and bland commentary. I could have done without that.

    Go See It Now.

    If you can :)
  • A quick one 2003-03-24 20:26:55 Still haven't gotten around to reviews yet this week. I have a job at a local store until the video house is ready in the summer....but by then it could be too late...I am seriously thinking of moving out west by the end of summer. My little sister (meaning age 23) is moving to Montana April 6th, so I will feel not so isolated if I do.

Anyway, the shifts are 10 hours. I am very tired lately. No break until Wednesday night, when I am going up to my mom's house until Friday because wednesday is her 49th b-day. She took mid life crisis hard, so it is my goal to find her some male companionship by the end of summer...(she has been divorced for 20 years!) perhaps Prius could help....nah ^_~ I am looking for the older and settled down type.

Going horseback riding next week. It's been so good to get away from the stupidity that is the forum lately.

If there is one thing this war has done, it's divided people more in a place already overflowing with tantrums. After the attacks in 2001, I felt like being behind the leadership too. Most people fell away and ignored the politics after then and now that war was declared, the papers have been selling and the news is a blazin'.

So I can see how people are confused and angry about protests because they feel the same way again. But they are absolutley blind at the moment and vicious and venemous to all those that call for peace. Yes, it is a horrible situation and there needs to be regime change on both sides of the 'axis'. There is so much to be said about the hypocritical views in the states at the moment.

From people praying to Jesus for protection, when Jesus abhored violence (yet Bush says Jesus is his philisophical advisor) to blind patriots....these people whine about others exercising their right to free speech. They say that it is what we are fighting for over there. We are not fighting for our freedom, we are fighting for others. That is not a bad thing but it shows how moronic and mis-guided many people are at the moment.

Also, if you don't agree with their views or have something bad to say about the government SHUT UP they tell you, those people are fighting for your freedom! Well, perhaps they are losing if you can tell someone to shut up about their opinions. -_-

It's all just B---S----. All of this. Hopefully the humans who have died did not suffer badly and just fates await ALL those who are responsible.

Woah there Chaos, your friend thinks she just aquired a new doormat....for your own sake you shouldn't let this become a habit. 'Sides...if she wants to be friendly and you want to be friends still, you must realize the best way to cream a friendship (especially one that is just rebuilding) is for a car wreck to get in the way. I have seen the devastation a money issue can do to even the best of friends.
