Holy freaking crap

Ok, if that link doens't show, it's a news story about a murder here in Athens.
The holy crap is because it happened in the parking lot
a) of the place I lived at until September of last year and
b) I only moved a block away which means I was like...60 - 70 feet from this killing and had no freaking clue.
It's also a big deal because, although roughly 3 students die every year here, it's always fires, cars, or OD on alcohol or drugs. Murders...just haven't happened. This town, without the college crowd registers at a small town size and in the boonies of Ohio.
So....it happened at 2:30 AM while I was making Strawberry pies in my kitchen *_*
I didn't hear any gun shots because the neighbors have loud parties (as in like 4 houses on that street alone) as it was a Saturday night. I also heard the sirens, but that's not too big a deal cause the hospital is a mile away or so and we hear them all the time.
I did hear lots of yelling and fighting, but this is also normal for the houses around me. One time, a guy knocked another guy into a car and a group of intoxicated brutes chased him off. Another time, New years, there was a crazy guy going up and down the street at 4AM and nearly ran over a guy we talked to who came out to see the comotion. In fact....I have put down a lot of stuff in my journal about my experiences with the drunks in the area...I live on the bad side of town @_@
There are no suspects yet, but I can guarantee it was either over drugs or the guys were plastered. University Commons, the apartment complex was nice but catered to the spoiled rotten college kids (though the good outweigh the bad, the bad tends to scream a lot :/ )
and now that it's all over I guess I am not too awfully suprised. People have to make their own way through life, and if you get into drugs or make getting drunk a habit every weekend, you deserve what you get in the end.

oooooh aaaahhhhh

I know that a lot of people liked Titanic, and then a lot of people hated it..
But thanks to Titanic, and then Kevin and his shenanigans...I have been immersed in maritime history and I love it!
So now I am crazy about going to Cali to see the Queen Mary, to Phili to see the SS United States, and maybe someday to see what's left of the Nomadic in Europe.
The french ships from the 1900-1920's were just beautiful. Too bad the wars had to come along and strip the world of much of it's maritime treasures...they were scrapped for metals, or turned into transports or hospital ships and destroyed.
So anyway, guess what is coming April 11th? An IMAX (in 3D of all things *drools*) cine-documentary about the wreck of the Titanic. This is as close to real as I am ever going to get! And I am pretty durn excited. Someday...if I get rich....I'd like to scuba into the Brittanic, but that is pretty unlikely. So the price of an IMAX ticket...and perhaps a glass of cold water ;) will have to do the trick.
In other news, one of the guineas died. He is being stored in the freezer until I can give him a proper burial up at my family's farm tomorrow.
So we got a new baby pig. He's named the Cheat. And Dutch and Cheat don't get along. Huffing, snorting, and chattering of teeth. It's cute to me ^_^ but they don't like each other. I tried to tame the raging beast by giving them a piece of lettuce to share, but they resembled two lions fighting over an antelope carcass. :3 Guinea pigs are so petty....

The midway an the aftermath
2003-02-18 22:27:06
Well, it's been several days now since I have had access to a compy. Mainly because since I still don't have cable access at home, and I would rather not go out and get a 56K in the meantime (it should be back...3 weeks from now) I just go to the College lab.
Happily, the ones in the building I am in are open until 3 AM Sunday thru Thursday.
That is....until this past weekend.
Good news for RichLather, I have teh pics! I lost the driver CD and had to find another online..so…^_^ I will post a pet topic in the forums here tomorrow for all to enjoy.
The guinea pigs were prancing in the snow. Too bad I didn't have a video camera or a quicker picture finger ^_~ I only got them in their resting states.
I'll try chronological here...prepare for a long post :)
The weather reports kept coming in 7 inches now, 8 later. All in all we ended up getting about 11. Disappointing, but enough to bury the city and create sheer havoc.
Lesse now, Sunday Sunday Someday…
I woke up at 10 AM and the road was nice and covered again. Once again as well, no plows had been down my street. Kevin and I went out walking early that day .
We first headed over to the wonderful computer lab. Ahh…my current access to the outside world. Mainly we were wanting to see what the weather report was and warnings. I scanned a couple drawings I have done for some online comics I liked. Me and my anamorphics.
Anyway, we were there until dinner time. I wanted to see the responses to my fanarts and I was just that bored.
The report called for 7 inches of snow that night. Exciting!
The level at that point was likely 1 or 2. By evening, it was 3.
Nightfall comes early and at about 7 pm we went out…yes, walking. Because the streets were a god awful mess and it was great standing out in the middle of a (usually) busy intersection there…in the slushiness…when it was illegal for cars to be out.
Well that didn’t stop some people. I mean, it’s for their own good, but some people have the instinctual need to run to the store and by milk and bread…things they never actually use because they usually partake in beer and frozen/delivery pizza round here. Ahh yes, we did see a lot of beer runners…walking no less.
So anyway, Kevin has a pet peeve about people who wantonly break the law when they are really just being selfish/foolish (he actually gets very annoyed by people who are stupid about cars alone *coughriceboyscough* not that they would be out) so we didn’t help people who were stuck. I felt a little bad but it was warm and it was safer for them to be stuck in the snow than to drive around at that point.
Off to the bridge to check things out.
Oh have I mentioned how historical Athens is? It even has its own haunted abandoned insane asylum
http://bernicle.freeservers.com/ridges.html
with this inside:
http://www.forgottenoh.com/Ridges/ridgeshaunts.html
That is where we were headed because it has a nice sled hill.
AT the bottom of the Ridges is a children’s play park of all things and we decided to hang out there awhile. I can’t remember the last time I played on the swingset ^_^
It even had a merry go round! We started to spin and then Kevin’s cell rings and it’s my mom. She was worried because she heard that a bunch of counties down there had lost electric and wouldn’t get it back until Thursday. The city looked lit up even though my place was across town so I wasn’t worried. When she was told we were playing at the playground near the haunted ridges in knee deep snow she laughed and asked us if We were crazy or just young. She understands ^_~
We weren’t the only ones with the idea of course. A whole lot of students came out to play in the snow. So behind us is a hill full of college aged kids screaming at the top of their lungs riding various things down a snow hill. We had 2x4 foot long Rubbermaid lid tops. They worked…ok…but the other people came prepared.
They had inflatable dorm mattresses ^^
Those things went hecka fast! It looked like a lot of fun. Luckily, when they decided to leave they let ride down once. We both got on it (they had the car at the bottom of the hill) and started down…OMG it was fast! There are trees down this hill too…but way down at the bottom was their car. Normally the weight of one person would have stopped before then but we were going fast and not stopping so after a thrilling fast ride, we had a great wipe out! The rolling down the hill kind ))))
It was great! After that fun filled event, we were ready to move on, as we had to make it to the one store in town still open…and on foot. There were 3 cars that were obviously joy riding and intentionally spinning out in the road. It’s still illegal to drive wrecklessly, but eh…we were walking in the road like every other pedestrian too.
For some insane reason we took the long way around . The bike path was covered and took 10 minutes to go on the same path that took like…2 minutes to jog normally. It was tiring but great exercise.
Up town and almost to the IGA (Appalachia and all) it was a mess and they had backhoes going up the road. Here was uptown during daylight hours Sunday
http://www.geocities.com/excel_sagas/athensuptown.txt
Got to the store with 10 bucks, bought 9.99 worth of food. We are the savvy shopper!
And the walk back was chaos. I didn’t mention all the spin outs with the stuck cars. No real fender benders, but cars running off the road and buried by snow.
It’s Tuesday and I still haven’t driven my car out of the driveway. No need to yet.
I made chili soup and we have plenty of anime to watch.
All in all it was a 5 hour snow outing.
I wish we could have snow storms more often

continued escapades

okkies.
It's really crappy down here in Athens ohio. The level is 3 and the plows make no dent in the conditions. So, we went walking again.
well this time we had a purpose. I needed to scan some pictures. Kevin's scanner doesn't work and we needed to get to the library so we walked.
People are just walking in the roads uptown becase the sidewalks are too covered.
And something happened today (and tomorrow) that hasn't happened for years in Athens.
They cancelled classes
The whole time I went to OU amd OUZ, they never cancelled classes. Most teachers didn't come in anyway -_-...but the buildings were still open.
So most buildings are closed, but the Library was open anyway.
It sounds not to big a deal but, my whole college career was 5 years and there was snow ice and crappy weather. They never officially cancelled because a lot of students live on campus and can walk. But...it's not like I went to classes on bad weather days anyway...and sleepy days....and nice days... ^_~ Nah, I got good grades. I was just whimsical.
And my snowman...:(
Athens has a lot of drunk students and the neighbors next door thought they would be funny and punched the head off my snowman! They put a huge stake through him too.
They made their own in their yard (they are as old as we are, not little kids) ...and they were really loud and really drunk all night last night.
Who knows what time the murder occured. They had their snow..'block'..(it wasn't shaped right)...holding lots of empty liquor bottles.
But I got my revenge. They punched the head off mine, I laid theirs to waste!! >:( And then displayed the stake above their snowman's broken body.
Ahh yes.
The guinea pigs will play later and be captured by photos for their adoring public :)

addendum to the snow story
2003-02-15 18:00:20
I forgot to mention another big thing that happened.
On our way down West State Street, all of a sudden we hear the theme to Gilligan's Island ok...
This is next to one of the many cemetaries in Athens and one where this:
http://www.forgottenoh.com/Cemeteries/wstate.html
Angel statue has been said to have moved and cried...ok that is unlikely but you can imagine how having that in the back of your mind and hearing
the theme from Gilligan's Island would seem......very very weird
So I look into the street and there is this poor cel phone crying from the snow indented tire tracks of a car.
I pick it up but I am not about to answer it! Kevin answered it with a casual hello and I could here the girl calling go : Who is this??? As he explained how I found it her main response was "Seriously??"..to everything :)
Anyway we returned it. They happened to live in the apartment complex just down the street. We told them to meet us at the Shafer/State intersection.
Oddly enough, there were people waiting there when we got there..but they weren't them.
Athens is a very weird place to have so many casual and sober people walking around the town at 4:00 am :)
