My DVD collection is interesting...
2002-10-19 21:48:18
Of my eight live-action DVDs, four of them have animated breaks. Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Wall, Lola Rennt and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. What's up with that?!

Movie Marathons the hard way
2002-10-19 00:16:06
$10 for a movie in NYC is ridiculous. In accordance of the law of Jeff and Ori, this is absurd and must be boycotted. So, Ori and I decided to do a marathon today, with so many movies being released last week. We decided to hit the AMC 25 in Times Square and our movie choices were many. We decided to sit through Below, Red Dragon and The Transporter. $3.33 a movie. That's more like it.
Below is brilliant. Not something you would ever expect. Then again, this is from the guy who did Pitch Black. That was another sci-fi unexpected good movie. It's not a ghost movie, it's not a horror movie, and it's not a submarine war movie. It's all three, but twisted so it works as a movie of the Mystery genre. Fantastic movie. Dimension can't advertise for crap. Cowritten by Darren Aronofsky! Dude, when I saw his name in the credits I almost jumped out of my chair and went "Oh really?! COOL!" Had I known earlier...
Red Dragon... yeah, it'd be great if I didn't see Silence of the Lambs. Oh, and if I didn't see Manhunter.
Transporter has this awesome scene where they fight in grease... the entire theatre was in hysterics.
So I come back to the dorm and watch Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I think I fell asleep for five minutes during that. I could imagine it doing well for being the first teen horror movies, but... bleh. Tame for now ;).
Ok, that's all. I gotta sleep, no activity for one day drains ya completely.

AUSA Journal Part 3: Sunday
2002-10-17 14:36:50
nailz: best Trix rabbit fan fiction EVER.
I wake up to find half the stuff on my side of the room... isn't mine at all. The reason? They were thrown at me because I was sleeping a little on the loud side :P That REALLY pisses me off because I got surgery to get rid of this damn problem. Is this enough for a lawsuit? I want my money back!
Anyway, spent most of this day in the dealer room deciding what to use my $25 gift certificate on and helping Vic and JC out with moving/checkout, etc. Also got to sit outside and smoke with Mint for a few which was nice. That's basically it. Sarah had to head home so I was off with her. What did I end up getting at dealer room, you may ask? Three Kubrick Eva sets *big grin* Eva so pretty...
And that's AUSA for ya. If I had to give this a "Best <blank> con" I'd have to say that this was the Best Fit-everything-into-one-day Con. Shoujocon has Best Genre Con, Otakon's got Best Big Con and AWA has Best AMV Con. So... seeing what's next around me is JACON (which I have no possible way of getting to. Oh well) and Ohayocon (I'll DRIVE this time...)

AUSA Journal Part 2: Saturday
2002-10-16 22:55:22
I just got two random wrong numbers on my cell phone in five minutes. Weird. Anyway, on to the music.
Saturday started... late. We woke up at 1PM, not too shabby... ordered food... vegged... watched Disney channel... vegged... sat around... at some point I just left since I actually wanted to enjoy the con. Well, that and I needed my badge. Said my goodbyes and left.
The lobby is such a great place to hang out. There's the bar, the lounge chairs, and Jason, Alan, Tim, Omar and Hsien sitting around a laptop judging videos and whatnot. Greetings to all, talked to Brian, another guy who actually lives near me in NYC! Amazing! If you're reading this, email me. Up for some Chinatown shopping? Talked with Andy a bit, got the morning bags under my eyes out real fast. At some point I saw Iserlohn and Vic walking around and flashed JC with my Newtype.com Gainax cover. Needless to say, he freaked. Heee...
So, lots of talking, hanging around, went to dealer room... tiny frickin dealer room... back to the bar, chat chat chat. Nate comes in somewhere, smoke smoke smoke. Head to dealer room again, this time with Hsien and the most awesome hentai comes to our attention, Anime Fiction. Folks, this hentai has everybody screwing everyone you'd want them to screw. Spike and Faye, Belldandy and Keiichi, anybody you want, they're getting screwed. It's too bad the art and animation SUCK. We wouldn't learn this until Hsien and Nate would buy their own copies. Oh well. That con really had a lot of hentai... that and HK DVDs! Those were ripoffs, too! Chinatown's got that place killed! Which reminds me I have to do my shopping for Nate, Hsien and Andy...
Yeah so next comes Utena DVDs we weren't able to finish capturing all the footage of (but got a lot to start with, thanks Iserlohn), and then we went down to visit the panel room. Sat in on the old-timers panel, started to sit on the Digital Age panel... with only two people we didn't know in the audience... and anchovies on pizza (anchovies rock!!) and five minutes into digital age good ol' Omar comes in and says, "We're starting the contest." The panel room emptied so fast...
So we're standing there watching it, punch in my hand... I think my third at that point, so I'm easy going. We go into this other room to sit and all of a sudden this stranded-on-a-deserted-table phone starts ringing. Hsien picks it up... asks who their looking for... then proceeds to give these random strangers directions back to the hotel. How thoughtful, you say. We found the original owners of the phone, anyway. Mint comes by (thanks to Brian's help) and we all finally get to watch the contest. It took about ten minutes for it to start, hardware problems, but it worked out.
TriEngel looked better on this screen than it did at AWA's contest. Lack of inside lights helped. Sarah, Mint's friend, and I worked out a deal to bring catbus on stage, so I brought it, with Andy and Nate in tow. We freaked Omar out on stage, he he he. ^_^ Another memorable moment, Vic getting second AND first place in one category. That's mega sweet. Congrats to him. The Akira video for Best of Show was perty good, a nice watch. Overall a relaxing contest.
So after that it's Weakest Link! I was going to be in the game, but since I didn't volunteer early enough I was the first to be voted off... by default :P Oh well, maybe next year? At this point the dance music goes off next to us. It was so damn annoying... the game was awesome nonetheless, with Vic as the host with the most, jc on graphics and me on volume (and doing a bad job, too. Sorry about your speakers, jc :P). The in-between videos were a cool watch, but more importantly was the game itself. I'm not gonna give away anything as you'll hopefully be able to watch it soon for yourself, but it was hilarious. The questions were good, the insults were excellent... the drawings made to vote off the other players... dude, you had to be there. Bum rushing the winner was great, too, who was so drunk he promptly fell afterwards.
So, game ended, we all hang out and decide to hit game room. DDR. Fun. Left and oh, hey, there's a green room! Nate's got his bunny ears so of course he's inside in two seconds. Meanwhile the rest of us are standing outside as Studio 54 door policy is applied to us. Now I'm on my fourth serving of punch in my Powerade bottle and the doorman asks for us to do the hokey pokey. Ten minutes later I think Andy gets in, and we're all outside. At some point the doorman just leaves and we all sneak in. There was a guy with a Lunch Money game card on his shirt, I had to shake his hand. Soon got into business talks with other people and um, oh, hey, can't release details, under confidentiality agreement (aka I totally forgot what happens here). Soon we all go outside to talk in quiet. Talk talk talk, negotiate, etc. That ends, we decide to head back in. Nate gets in no problem. Myself and the vendors... forget it. So, I tell the doorman to tell Bunny Ears when he gets out that I'm in 361 with the other guys.
At 361 (AMV creator sharing space) we watched the tape of Weakest Link. The dance music and weak mic were no help... but the video looked ok. Anyway, Nate comes in completely drunk and I totally forget what time it is at this point. Anyway, Alan's camera has seen many a splendid thing, and this was no exception. I remember Nate at some point looking like a Playboy (bunny ears) boy scout (cap) god (toga) who was gay (purple gloves, taken out of cosplay context). I don't think Vic wants to touch those ever again... we all decide to hit the lobby at this point.
We're in the lobby. Having fun, squashing... squash (yes, random vegetables were everywhere, and I made sure many of those didn't see the next day uncracked). And on the signature board someone put Yoko Kanno and Nate's name on it. At 5AM. Hehe. Anyway in this mess of random fun this bald guy comes out and starts talking to us, asking what we're doing, talking about what he's here for, you know, general fun chat. The more we chat, however, the more he gets descriptive on Nate and asks what he's all about (bunny ears). From here on out it takes a strange, unfriendly tone.
It only gets worse as the hour draws by. This guy was intent on having Nathan not act in front of him, and to be the director. It's funny to look back on it now, but at the time, it was getting scary, and as Nate, Hsien, and Andy tell me, I hadn't seen the worst of it. Well, I kinda did. You see, after a while I couldn't handle the weirdness of this guy and I went out to talk with Vic, Tim and JC. I start to wonder if game room's still open, and I check it out. I come back, and everybody's gone back to the room. No biggie. I see big scary bald guy still with the guys and just head back to the game room. Come out, head to 361 to see if anything was going on and I realize I left something in the game room. So I'm walking back and all of a sudden I feel a rumble from the ground and the sound of rushing feet. Before I know it, here comes Hsien, Andy and Nate running like fuckin Forrest Gump at me and we all immediately jet to the Omar's crash room. Inside the room the three of them are in a frenzy, describing how they had to run from crazybitchpsychobaldguy.
The time's 5AM, at this point everyone's calm down and Nate and I leave to go back to our room. Nate's completely sober at this point, and I'm official scout for scary bald guy. We get back to the floor safely to find Mint standing outside the elevator doors. God were we glad to see her. After a talk in the stairwell we head back to the room and get ready to sleep. Now, I don't know how this happened, but I look in my bag and an Evangelion-edition deck of cards and Macross Plus II DVD are staring me in the face. How the hell did I get these? Whatever. We're totally not tired and it's after 6AM, so we order breakfast and watching some hentai. Nate and Mint, in their underwear, crawl over to Sarah's bed to watch the stuff, Nate totally smothering her when room service arrives. I open the door since I'm basically the only one with clothes on and take the food, giving the poor room service guy a great view of Nate on top on Mint in their underwear, watching animated porn with Mint's friend in the same bed. The look this man gave me... Paid for room service and I never saw that man again.
Food was damn good... not too much, but good. Then I fall asleep somewhere in there around 6:30AM.
So ends today's journal. I'm telling you, so much happened in just one day, and it was such a blast.
