Effects rundown and status
2002-02-21 04:06:24
So I've been prepping to write a review for my second AMV, "Numb," and I've noticed that there were a lot of scenes that were manipulated for our purposes and some things were kept under wraps. That's kind of blasphemous to the original masterpiece of a series so I am making up for it by listing the most significant or hard to notice edits I can remember. I also included some info on how to do it yourself. DO NOT READ THIS if you haven't seen the video yet. To get you started, two words. After Effects. Premiere effects listed as well. Enjoy.
0:52 Frame-by-frame editing to get the hand to move on cue.
0:54 The arm movement is awkward not only because it is actually backwards but also because this was frame-by-frame edits to make it look like Shinji is softly shaking her when really he was shaking her rather roughly in the original shot.
1:13 Added layers of the same shot. You may have noticed the only things changing were the lines and the numbers on the left. The beauty of overlays.
1:30 Talk about a tricky overlay... first there's the doll layer. Over that is Asuka walking on a track. Over that comes a close-up of Asuka that hides the transition from Asuka walking to a scenery shot. Close-up of Asuka fades, motionless scene fades, left with spinning doll set for a close-up of its own just in time. So technically you were watching four layers at one time in that one instance. Freaky, eh?
1:47 Again with multiple layers, this time stretched and pulled to split up Shinji. Did some masking work do save Asuka's beautiful 'do'.
2:22 NightOwl's idea. Totally brilliant. All I did was a cut & paste job, some resizing, and color filters to keep hair color in tact and voila! Almost seamless edit.
2:30+ (first part of guitar solo) The screen gradually turns red until it's just a mess of red.
4:26 Rei in the eye. Another masking job in After Effects, just resized and positioned the clip of Rei where I wanted it in the eye, set the opacity low, kept a consistant mask around the iris and that's that. The movement was Premiere and happy accident that Rei moved onto herself as it fades to the same shot.
5:32 Another mask with gradual feather value rising.
5:47 Speed up-clow down of Rei. Great film technique. Same as 5:51.
6:43-end Somewhere in this journal I gave step-by-step instructions on how I did this. Basically the water scene and the edited JPG of Asuka and Shinji on the beach move at the same time, on screen and mathematically.
If you haven't seen this video I think you might want to (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/video.php?v=2507). It's been brought to my attention from ShonenDizzyCow's journal that "Numb" is the #2 Evangelion vid in the top 10% Only Caldwell's "Engel" is above us. Apart from shock, I'm totally grateful, but agitated at the fact that filesize scares many users away from downloading the video. It's hosted off a T1, so an overnight download or three would be in order, yes, but it's not impossible to get.
Now as for any future work, Nightowl and I shuffle ideas around like playing cards in a deck. With jokers. A lot of ideas come out of us, and we're itching to work (well, I've been hesitant recently from work piling in and the stress of meticulous video editing again), but nothing too solid for both of us. I think what we need to do is take something from a long time ago that we threw out and play with it to see if it can be revived. I did that with "Numb." Left it on a shelf for a month before finally getting a shove to doing it full-time. Even Vicbond called Nightowl the future of AMVs, so the future is looking bright for us. I'm really excited, just wait for this summer, it's gonna be great.

VCA: Oh no, I didn't expect any of those people to win *cough*
Logo: My god, I don't believe it. Someone with actual focus won this contest. Good going! Love that logo!

Viewer's Choice Award? Bah. I have a Shoujocon logo to worry about.

No offense, of course. Yeah I've been gone awhile, and I'm still not back yet. 2001 sucked. I don't think I'm alone when I say that. Now, not because I could have been smashed by 200+ story buildings (well, not unless the Empire State was next. THAT is in my danger zone), and not because I could have breathed in some asbestos and died, but because I had no money... no car... no job... and no discernable skill. Not to mention my classes stunk that year ('cept advertising).
2002 couldn't have started better. Got a website job so I'll be getting paid. Made CD labels for Fruits Basket that convinced a friend of mine that I actually had potential and later told his girlfriend I would be able to do the logo for Shoujocon (which is currently in my control), made a title for a project for Nightowl and redesigned the logo which basically got us friendly again, and some other miscellaneous jobs that are resulting in some stuffing of wallet. I *really* needed this.
Now as for AMV's, I'm probably as close to retired as I'm going to get. Feh. RETIRED. Oooooooh. What the hell do I think I am? Some kind of megabusiness CEO? Well, not yet. But I certainly don't think I'm *retired* at anything unless whatever I am doing offers me a 401k plan!
Anyways, AMVs may pop up again when I feel like not working for money again. Heh, money is a powerful thing. Wait. No it isn't. If I got batches of cookies after doing a job, that's payment to me! I think it's just payment I'm looking for. Of any kind. Send me your cookies, folks! You owe me!
Oh well, whatever. Off to designing Shoujocon.
