You see, some people are just able to circulate this site once every hour and lose whatever trace of a life they still have left. It's sad really, but that's how they're able to journal chat.

The beauty of DVD
2002-04-28 03:23:09
I finally got myself a DVD player. *commence drool* And I got two DVDs, the Evangelion movies and the entire Excel Saga series (altogether costing $55. I love Chinatown...). I've only seen End of Eva on tainted Divx copies. To see this movie on DVD in such vibrant color... brings a tear to my eye and a depression to my mood all over again. I could totally take the footage from this and re-edit Numb so my capture rating will be better.
I really should concentrate on a new project, though.
So I got this Daewoo player at Kim's Video. I love Kim's. Why? They sell this awesome player for $180. Progressive scan, PAL to NTSC translation, reverse, slow motion, pitch controls, frame-by-frame skip, ahh... and on the box itself there's three sheets of paper. #1 Take away Macrovision and your warranty is void. Switching regions won't harm you any. #2 How to switch region codes. #3 How to scrap macrovision.
Now this place in Chinatown I go to sells entire series of most anime for less than $60, and I'm talking about the authentic Japanese (or Chinese) packaging with English subtitling NOT done by US licensers (double-edged sword). Excel Saga subs are so off it's hilarious, but it's not like I need perfect English in that show anyway. The Eva movies, however, were done very well and I still can't get over the video quality. Gorgeous.
I also got three more Kubrick sets, that makes seven on my bookshelf. My anime sensei at SVA is graduating this year so he gave away a ton of his fansubs he'd collected over his four years there. I took 29 of his 100+ stack, including Slayers Next, Eatman (best opening song EVER) and Lost Universe. Basara and Berserk thrown in there, too. To add to that, my friends bought me American-releases of the Evangelion models... you know what that means? STOP MOTION MOVIE! WOOHOO!
Oh yeah... I got finals this week. Eh heh... ^_^;

A word to the wise
2002-03-30 04:06:00
Do NOT let your fangirls throw you a surprise birthday party. ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE OTAKU. It's worse enough that otaku generally have no organization, it's even more disastrous when they are two huge black women who seriously need to get laid. Yes, I am going to Otakon with these people. God help me.
Everyone from anime club was there to surprise me, though, and that was nice. Hey! I even got gifts! Vol. 3 + 4 of Kare Kano manga and I am promised Vol. 5! Ahhh, me happy.
It seriously scares me to think that people can be so nuts even without alcohol. In addition to this I am petrified when these people don't realize I'd rather be in gatherings than parties. I'm that breed of person you call "BORING" and it's best not to try and adapt me to other situations. It's not pretty. I did kick everyone's ass at Twister, though. Muahaha... flexible 135 lbs. 6" otaku... ok not too flexible... but if I was able to beat a bunch of women (and ONE guy) then that's gotta count for something.
I realize I am a giant idiot. Clues as to the surprise party were laid out before me day by day. At some point it should have been rather obvious, but I was totally oblivious. You see why I hate surprises, makes me look a lot dumber :P
Well anyway, the party at first had about... 25 people? 17 from club. Once the SURPRISE! and singing was over, it was time to kick the people who weren't meant to be there out. That was NOT easy. Not only are you talking to NYC otaku who generally have no sense of "TAKE THE HINT AND GET THE HELL OUT" but you're also talking to this one guy who is stalking the girl of my fancy and also can't take a hint. Ever see Captain Linger on Cartoon Network? That ain't fiction, folks. These people breed... Also another mistake to be added to the "what NOT to do to have a surprise party" is lie about the cops coming and a racist father nearby to get people to feel warned and leave. One of my friends, who was meant to be there... oh hell, I mean the girl of my fancy, totally freaked at this and almost passed out in fear. Another otaku no-no. NO MAJOR LIES.
I was told from one of these big black women that one of her friends had a crush on me. I damn well hope I crushed whatever dreams she had after that party, because I surely am not going to like that tape if it is ever played to an audience *automatically feels his throat sink at the thought of Otakon's giant viewing screens...* Now it's not that I intentionally want to hurt this person's feelings, but let's face it. Telling someone that someone else has a crush on them is like saying that you're being watched in *that* way whether you like it or not. ... and I wonder why I'm 20 years celibate.
Yeah, the big 20... finally out of my god damn teens. Well, not yet anyway. I have until Apr. 3 to enjoy, or at least try to enjoy, my last days at 19 years old. I have this really good feeling 20 will be a good year. No idea why. Maybe the stars are moving around nicely in my favor, maybe I'm just over-estimating and unprepared for reality. Well, whatever. I'll be 20 soon so PLEASE no surprise birthday parties, I beg of you...
Forgot to mention, the whole party was captured on tape. God help me again.

Minimum Wage
2002-03-22 00:53:28
Just watched Jbone's "Minimum Wage" which is Big O to They Might Be Giants, and it may be a really short AMV, but throughout the whole thing I got a strange little chuckle rumbling inside me. Know what that means? Someone with absolute potential... I am really looking forward to seeing more of his stuff now...

Limbo land... limbo land...

Still stuck with work. If not school work, then freelance work, and I'm on spring break as of today! This is unfair! I really make another anime music video at some point. I had made a tape of the best AMVs and showed it to the club, and for some reason that inspired me heavily. "Love is Flowers" got the usual reponse ("YAY! AWESOME!"), and "Numb" ("Wow... that's a lot of After Effects.") :P I pray to god Otakon will take good care of it. We haven't even submitted it yet, but we will! Muahaha!
Anyway, I feel terrible. Turboneko has always been praising my work and NightOwl's for so long, and I haven't even emailed him in months. I'm gonna stop being a bastard and email him now. I really owe him. I mean, hey, when he lists one of your videos (or two in NightOwl's case) as his favorite videos worth reviewing, that's a fan you don't want to dissapoint. I hope he likes Fushigi Yuugi because my next idea will fit nicely into the next DDR project if there ever is one. And if not, screw DDR! I'll just make it to the entire theme of Neverending Story. Think about it. Fushigi Yuugi. Neverending Story. Could it not be more perfect? Hey! HEY! Don't be stealing my ideas! I see you there! Don't even try it! I called it first (I think)!
Finally met Nathan in NYC too, which was awesome, I got to spend a whole day with him. Heh, we were eating at this sushi place and as soon as they served us water, we drank to exactly half-glass and put it down at the exact time. I know this may seem dorky, but I'm telling you, he's my long-lost brother. Also showed him off to my dorm buddies. I feel bad now, I almost used him as a trophy (my friends are all amazed at his editing skill) but it was cool. I miss him already.
