JOURNAL: Chaos Angel (Dave Warren)

  • Cons 2002-10-03 23:53:13 I've been looking through pictures people posted from AWA.

Jeezus, that looks like it was a lot of fun.

I wonder what it'll be like when I ship of to Otakon or ACen, and I get to meet all of these people I've only ever met online? Will any of them recognize me for whatever reason? Looking at all of these AWA pics is giving me a very positive feeling about Otakon 2003. I think it'll be a fucking blast.

Aaron, if you see this (I haven't seen you around the forums much; you must be busy as all hell what with Dell, TSC, and school, plus that fandub parody you mentioned you were making), we'll have to work out some kind of meeting plan for Otakon closer to the time.
  • Bitch Session 2002-10-03 23:10:29 I've been reading people's journal entries on AWA, and how much fun they all had.

I wish I could have gone... I didn't look into it soon enough to get good reservations or anything. Oh, well, maybe next year.

For all who are interested, I am definitely planning to go to Otakon 2003 next summer, and I am tossing around the idea of making an appearence at ACen 2003. I intend to enter Course of Action in the AMV contest, so since I will have a video entered, I am tossing around the idea of making an appearence on the day of the AMV contest. When they post a schedule on the site, I will make more concrete plans. Whether or not I will attend any days besides the AMV Contest, we'll see. I will be driving up from Carbondale, which is a 6-7 hour drive. What I may do is drive up as soon as I get off of classes on Friday (I don't know what my schedule will be like next semester yet, so that is up in the air), stay the night at a hotel on Friday, attend Saturday, drive home on Sunday. That, of course, is assuming the AMV contest is on Saturday. If not, I'll have to adjust my plans.

As for Otakon... I plan to fly down, stay for the entire con, and go home on the next Monday. It's during summer, so I don't have to worry about missing classes. As for any summer job I may have, I'll schedule the time off in advance and pass it off as a school orientation thing if necessary. If they don't want to give me the time off... fuck 'em.

If I'm working out at the Guard next summer like I was last summer, that'll be great schedule-wise, because I make my own schedule. Literally. And I make $10.00 an hour.

Best summer job ever. Boring, but rewarding.

Maybe I should stay in the guard like my family wants me too... It's a pension at age 40 if I stay in 20 years, medical insurance, cheap airline trips, I could just be drafted back in anyway if we go to war, until I'm 30, so I may as well stay in... So, why, despite all that, do I not want to renew when I'm done? Because I see it as only a way through college? Or because I despise the psychosomatic restrictions (have to maintain a certain weight and hair style, can't picket or join political organizations, etc.)? The only real reason I can come up with is "Because I don't want to", which would get shot down fast. Despite all the benefits, I don't really want to stay in. I want to be free. I don't want to have to go in for drill once a month, don't want to have to make a big trip every month.

I think it may come down to I don't want to do what they want me to do.

Maybe I'm being a whiny bitch. I dunno.

How did I get so far off topic? I started talking about my con plans for next year, and trailed into a discussion of whether or not I should stay in the Guard when my contract ends in three-ish years.

I'm gonna end this before I go into the pink space aliens that abducted me as a child.

Oooops, they told me not to say anything... they're gonna anal probe me again... AAAARRRRRRGH!!!

    I'm so wierd... ^_^

  • 2002-10-03 22:23:23 I can't remember what I was gonna enter here...

Damn. Brain died out on me...

    Oh, wait. There it is.

I found a GREAT store in town today. They sell everything a nerd could hope for. Comics, RPG supplies, old horror flicks, and, most importantly, ANIME!!! Not just VHSs and DVDs either; we're talking OSTs, model kits, art books, episode guides, manga, the works. The OSTs are cheaper than at CDJapan too, where I was browsing OSTs and contemplating ordering some until I found this place.

    Let us compare.

CDJapans' price for Cowboy Bebop OST 3: Blue- $24.59 US, before shipping.

Price I payed for the exact same CD, before tax: $14.99.

Doesn't take a genius. I already had the first OST; it came free with the Perfect Sessions box set. So, I picked up the second AND third OSTs for $15 each!! I paid $30 for what would have cost me $50 if I had imported them from CDJapan.

I wonder why they are cheaper at that store than off of CDJapan, but I'm not about to question my good luck. Hell, they only had one copy of Blue, and guess who got it?! SCORE!!!

They even do orders too!! I asked if they had Trigun OSTs, which I have been wanting for a few weeks ever since I started downloading Trigun songs like fucking MAD, and they said no, but they could order some into stock. So, I'll check back later.

I wonder if they can order up some FLCL OSTs...

    I frikken love The Pillows...

I'll have to ask if they do individual orders, because what I did was esentially ask them to put the Trigun OSTs in stock, not order them FOR me per se.

    Still... I frikken can't WAIT!!!

    Happiness!!! Yea!!

  • Oh. My. Goddess. 2002-10-02 00:44:32 I just finished it. I just finished what is probably one of the most beautiful and moving series I have ever seen. You know how people can describe how good something is, but you have no idea until you see it for yourself? Just. Like. That.

God, I just want to cry right now. Cry and scream out of sheer emotion. Joy, sorrow, everything. God. I started laughing and crying until I realized I was waking up my roomate.

Jeezus, I love it. It's so beautiful and touching. It's... it's just wonderful.

Definitely going on my Top 10 list.
  • 2002-10-01 17:48:44 Ok, I've finally gotten time to watch the Oh My Goddess DVDs that came in the mail all backwards (vol 2, then vol 1). I had rented vol 1 last spring when I was in Champaign, so I've seen it before, but they didn't have Volume 2, so I have never finished the series.

I have to say, AnimEigo has officially impressed the hell out of me. First, there was the card that came with OMG V2 instead of liner notes, which made me laugh my ass off. Then, when I finally got Vol 1, I read the liner notes, and I was impressed that they included with the DVD a quick guide to Japanese vowel sound pronunciations, and the origins of the series. I thought that was a very nice piece of customer service, as well as a nice bit of info considering I want to learn Japanese. Then, I started watching the DVD, and I noticed something that had escaped my notice last time.

    It's practically a fansub!!

Instead of translating things like Sempai and -chan to their English equivalents, the left them intact and bothered to explain the meaning. I love that they did that. (I am talking about the sub here, BTW).

I don't really know how to put it into words, but the subs just have that feel to them, like the people translating them actually knew what the hell they were doing!! I don't know how to put it in any better terms.

Suffice it to say, between their sense of humor and willingness to teach people something along with giving them the show itself, I think I am in love with AnimEigo. I wonder if their other releases are as well done as OMG...

Which reminds me, I have been meaning to see Kimagure Orange Road for some time now. Maybe when it comes out, I'll pick it up... we'll see.
