JOURNAL: Chaos Angel (Dave Warren)

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAACEEEEENNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!! ^o^ 2003-05-18 16:45:22 I am back from my one day at ACen.

Aside from general boredom between events, it was fun. I hit the end of the Naze Nani Megatokyo Panel and they were a fun bunch of guys. I want to catch the whole thing at Otakon, maybe see if Fred Gallagher will draw something for me. Flint and I got in in time for the tail-end of the AMV contest screening. Saw some videos I liked (Euphoria, WuWu's Matrix trailer, a rather interesting Totoro video, a funny little short bit by Sailor Death) and some I did not like too much at all (an FLCL video done with Tatu's All The Things She Said that I felt lacked focus and concept, and a God-awful End of Eva video that was just Asuka's Last Stand with some rage-rock rap-metal song that I can't even remember the name of. Bad timing, almost no synch, no point to it (not in a good way, something can be pointless but still entertaining, and this wasn't) and it was just gratuitous (again, in a bad way. Gratuitous can be good done properly) and needlessly violent. The people behind me were complaining about how needlessly violent it was. They let that crap in, but not Trythil's Always?

    >_<

I also hit Iron Guest and watched two animators (can't remember the mystery challenger's name, but one was Takeshi Honda. The guy in charge said they both worked on the Oh My Goddess movie) compete. They got a half hour to draw something with a bishoujo theme. Honda drew an amazing picture of Belldandy, Skyld, and Urd that would have taken me a week, and it still wouldn't have looked as good. Challenger X drew a very simple drawing of a girl I think he made up (didn't recognize her as a character) and some doodles along the way of the little alien thing from Please Teacher looking sad. Honda won. I liked the simple style of the other drawing, I thought it was very nice, but the Goddesses drawing was amazing. They will both sell at a charity auction today (Sunday). Too bad I probably couldn't afford them; I want both!! ~_^

E.K. was one of the judges, and I went up afterwards and said hello. I couldn't believe she agreed to draw something in my sketchbook. It's amazing. I'd scan it in and post a picture, but I only have a sheet feed scanner, and it tends to smear pencil slightly. I don't mind my drawings getting smeared, I now and accept the risk, but I want to keep this one nice.

Dealers room was full of interesting stuff, but I didn't get anything. Iron Chef was a fucking blast!! While Daniel Chang and Dan Millikin editted (DWChang won!! Congrats again!) the judges played videos, cracked jokes, and it was a blast. Flint and I saw Koopiskeva halfway through and went up to say "Hio". We ended up hanging with him, Phreakazoid, Trythil, Fluxmeister, and a couple others until 11:30. At 11, we all left. I took Flint back to his house in Aurora, amid hallucinations and zoning out due to tiredness (It was a 20 hour day after maybe 3 hours sleep. I thought for sure I would hit something!! ^o^), then made my way to a cheap, dirty motel alongside the back highway that led into Aurora. Only $30, but damn, it was crappy. The heater had no front cover, and I could have touched the flame if I wanted too. To think that my cover landed on the floor during the night from my tossing and could have hit that flame... ::shudders::)

Oh, I almost forgot to mention one aspect of the con that I enjoyed more than I thought I would: the cosplayers. I didn't go to the masquerade (it was more than an hour late, and conflicted with Iron Chef by that point, and you know where my priorities were!!), but watching them in the wallways was fun. I kept seeing people with interesting costumes. The novelty wore off after about three hours and 15 Inu-Yasha's, but it was fun. Noteable cosplayers:

The couple with the guy dressed as Wolfwood and the girl as Vash who walked around with a sign reading "Will Pose for Yaoi Pictures". Lol.

A girl dressed in a furry bunny hot pants/halter top combo, with lop ears that drooped to her waist, and furry boots and gloves to boot. She was VERY attractive, and the bunny costume (when it comes to rabbits, I have a soft spot for lop-ears) gave her extra points.

A cute little girl dressed in an orange kimono that I think her mother bought in the dealer room. Absolutely precious. I wanted to go "Aaaaaawwwweeeee...", but dignity wouldn't allow me. Technically, tjhis wasn't cosplay, but she looked very cute in the kimono, so I'm adding it.

Two girls in costumes similar to the aforementioned hot-bunny-girl, but Moogles instead of bunnies. Koop took a picture of them hugging. It was very shoujo-ai. He also got Fluxmeister posing with them.

The Moogle Twins had a friend dressed as a devil dominatrix, in black leather and everything. Hot!!

My favorite was the girl who dressed as Aeris. But she wasn't JUST Aeris. She had on a simply cut red silk dress with spaghetti straps and no sleeves, her hair was done up and she somehow got it to loop forward in front exactly the way Aeris' does, and she had a red rose tucked into her hair. She wasn't just Aeris. She looked like Aeris ready for prom, or a formal dinner. Words cannot describe how gorgeous this woman was. I never wanted a camera more in my life. She was absolutely stunning.

'Course, Aeris is my anime crush, so that may be influencing me a tad. ;)

Now, something for the ladies. ^_^

One guy who really stood out to me was a guy doing Vash. Like the woman above, he wasn't just another guy doing Vash. He was Vash shirtless. He had the scar tissue and the metal gates covering the big gashes and everything. He also had to tin cans and a glove to be the cybernetic arm. It was VERY inventive considering how many red trenchcoats and bleach jobs I saw. ^o^

One guy was dressed as Alucard. He didn't do anything special, but he was memorable for one reason. He not only had the costume dead on, with the glasses and coat and hair and everything, but his facial structure was almost EXACTLY like Alucard's. It literally looked like Alucard walked out of a TV set and hit ACen. The likeness was that good.

I loved the guy dressed as Nikki from Chrono Cross. Another case of the person looking almost EXACTLY like the character, right down to the body type and facial structure.

And I also got to see a rather large guy with a full beard wearing a blond wig and a Sailor fukuu. Scaaaaary... ^o^

  • Disney and Rusty DVDs (see UncleMilo's journal entry for details) 2003-05-16 22:00:52 Waste of fucking time and money. DivX technology was the same basic principle, and it failed miserably because people do not want to buy a product that they can only use for a short time. It's asinine. Aside from that, I'm sure some sort of compound can be used to dissolve the black coating but keep the DVD information intact. Diluted sulfuric acid or something. Then, someone will either market it or place the info on the internet. Hell, I would.

If they release these 48 hour DVDs, I think it would be a good idea to buy one, copy it so you still have your movie, and scratch off some of the black residue and begin the chemical experimentation. Some form of diluted acid should be able to remove the compound and not harm the DVD.

God, that idea is such a horrible fucking waste of money and resources. No one will want to buy a movie that they can only watch once then it's useless, unless it is dirt fucking cheap. Unless it's equal too or better than a rental store price (and even then, you can always keep it over if you want to watch it again), it's a waste of time. If it's $1-$2 a DVD, maybe, but full price for a temporary movie?

Fuck that. They'll lose money making all of these DVDs that no one will want to buy because they are useless after 2 days. People who don't know about the time limit will write in and complain when their DVDs stop working, and just get pissed when they get told they should have read the box better. Within a week, I predict, people will get pissed at the technology and stop buying them, and the temporary DVDs will tank.

I need to sleep (insomnia) because I have ACen tomorrow!!

    Fucking insomnia...

  • 2003-05-15 01:12:43 Sarah B's entry made me remember something.

I have yet to play Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean.

Good lord, at this rate, I'll be getting a PS2 when they come out with the PS3!! I NEED MGS:2 and FF 10... ::cries::

I a entering this on a not-my-normal compy computer. My Compy is rendering a segment of the Hellsing video I am working on for Otakon (and wondering how the hell I'll get it mailed in on time...). Will Milberry said in his LiveJournal that he is expecting there to be a lot of entries to the Kon with flashy effects designed for no purpose other than gaining votes. Well, if this video makes it into the contest, he and others who dislike effects-as-vote-enhancer videos may like it. It has no effects save transparency (if you count that).

Yet, I am growing to dislike this video. It's just so... ugh. Mediocre and bland. If I finish it, I'll enter it, but I doubt that it'll get very far in the running, if at all. Wait and see, it's just so... bland. The song isn't one of the best or most memorable songs Smashing Pumpkins put out, it just had parts that made me think "Hellsing", so I went with it.

Afterwards, I'm gonna work on Deliverance (currently %1 done! woot...), and I may put in some editting on Cherry in Binary (%0), or the untitled Crazy Teenage Girls video.

I need a second HD to store VOBs. Or to burn my AMVs to CD and free up space...

I need a DVD Burner for all of those things, though... CDs don't hold enough... >_<
