Is Buckaroo Banzai's Mommy. I didn't know that....
Snagged it for Jim for Valentine's Day - he gave me the DVD special edition Pioneer did for Akira - and we both got chocolate and life is thus good.
Today is the Day of Remembrance - the day Little Tokyo commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Roosevelt, and the World II exclusion and incarceration of Japanese Americans (and I thought this interesting), Japanese Latin Americans. It was particularly noteworthy as this is the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Order - and many of the local communities were coming together specifically to provide insight based on the past experiences of these folks in the aftermath of the events of September 11th.
Anyone coming out for Anime-Expo really, in my opinion, spend a day walking the streets of Little Tokyo - the Japanese American National Museum is fantastic, and the sidewalks surrounding it are inlaid with brass markers outlinining the history of this community - in 1914, the hardware store was here, in 1921, this was there -- and while nobody forgets Pearl Harbor, these folks will never forget Executive Order 9066 and what it did to their homes, business and lives.
Their site is at http://www.janm.org
Spent the day doing the tourist thing with a guest from out of town and had shabu shabu for lunch (that rocks!) and walked through the museum grounds talking about the events going on (lots of speeches and plenty of media), reading the sidewalks and shopping, shopping, shopping. Dianne is this crazy redhead who married into a Chinese family year before last, so we had a lot to talk about.
And Little Tokyo is frankly a nice place to visit - you're always welcome there.
Bowler - there is a live action set of films for Lone Wolf and Cub (snagged a bunch of the laser discs last year) that Animeigo has available under their Samurai Cinema line. Can't speak for how it compares against the manga (Wendy Pini swears by it and claims it was an inspiration for her art from waaay back) but the films I've been able to get through have been *quite* watchable and the stories thought-provoking. Envy you being able to read the manga - it's on a long wish list of things to get.
EK- I sure hope you're feeling better.
There's also a new place in the "Little Tokyo Village" part of town called Anime Planet that has a bunch of anime-related goods from Japan, but not a whole lot of DVDs for any kind. If you're looking for the adult stuff, laser discs (in Japanese only), posters, figures or the like - check it out.
Jim is really getting on my nerves with this "Convoy" bit - seems to think we can use some stuff from Patlabor...*looks for dimensional hammer*

Something new has been added....

Had dinner last night in Little Tokyo, and I think we might have found ourselves one heck of a clubhouse, if we want it.
The place is on the third floor of the Mitsuwa Center on Alameda and 3rd (used to be Yaohan...), and is called Cookand. The cuisine is Korean BBQ (no grills, but the Korean BBQ dishes come out on sizzling cast iron with all the condiments), and what isn't Korean is pretty kick-ass too.
Jim had the steak sandwich and had trouble finishing it, I had the Korean BBQ chicken and took most of it home. I think they put two chickens on that plate...full of garlicky onion goodness, just sizzlin' away there. *counts dishes in her head* I think there were seven dishes of condiments, not including the salad and appetizer pancake. There are also some really good desserts on the menu too, and plenty of things to drink. I don't know if they got their liquor license yet, but they call themselves a family restaurant...maybe they'll have beer.
But the best part -- the walls are LINED with manga. I saw everything from Ruroni Kenshin to Basara to CLAMP Veda to Short Program to -- and all the current issues of Dragon, Animeage, etc.
And a brand, spankin' new big-screen TV with VCR and DVD player attached, complete with comfy chairs and tables in front of it.
Across the restaurant is a room full of computers-for-rent ($3 for an hour, and the more hours you buy, the cheaper it gets), with a full T1 connection.
Dinner for the two of us with a generous tip (the staff is wonderful!) was about $20.00. The place is new, out of the way and could really use some word of mouth.
The kicker was when we were leaving, the owner gently pulled me aside and put a manga into my hands - a bee-yu-tiful Tale of Genji that's got both English and Japanese, probably manga with training wheels, but I'll have to go back and read it.
They're open 7 days a week, 11AM to 10PM. It screams Sour Grapes Con for this weekend (can't get to Katsucon?). Surely, there is a way I can invite everyone down for an iced tea, at least.

turboneko - Biztalk?! RUN AWAY!!!! Microsoft EDI!!! EVIL! EVIL! *runs and hides under desk and begins praying for Voltron*
Here...*hands them Peregrine's website* They're having a HUGE industry forum in San Diego next month. I may not agree with them half the time and think their tech support sucks, but I love them to little itty bloody bits next to Biztalk. http://www.peregrine.com/synergy02
Ye gods, someone else out here has to do EDI for a living. *faints*
StudioKZ- and the worst part for these guys, I suppose, is that when you shoot someone, they don't die. Hey, if you can get to Bulgaria, can you get to Swizterland? Got some family there who will treat you like a human being and will be happy to tell you why most Europeans have a dim view of American soldiers. It goes back to WWII and it's stuff that doesn't get made into movies with Tom Hanks in them, I assure you. (And of course, everything that came after that...) In truth, nobody likes soldiers when they *really* have to deal with them and the issues they represent. Hope you come home soon.

Absurdities for the Day...

The kid who won the gold in the half-pipe doesn't want to be on the Wheaties box - he wants to be on the box with Count Chocula. (A man after my own tastebuds!)
*HAAAAACK!* ptui --
Do not.
Ever.
Taste.
The.
Chinese.
Liquor.
Labeled.
"Special Chinese Liquor."
That Michael brought in.
ACCCCKKKK!!!
51% alcohol...made from a bunch of things, but mostly sorghum, the stuff they supposedly make molasses out of? Michael brought it in (along with a tray of candied who-knows-what from Vietnam) - happy happy, but it smells like nail polish/acetone with a little something sweet mixed in and tastes like hot smoke with an aftertaste like burnt hay.
I suspect it would taste better once you'd had a few. Foul....

My Life...*help me*
2002-02-12 14:12:47
Here is a typical page out of my workday - Boss gets a notification from one of our largest customers that they are changing their purchase order process, and to go out to their website for the specifications. He forwards it to me and my cohort, Michael for examination, and are there ramifications to our existing process? My answer:
------------
There are --
I'm not entirely familiar with the order process we employ with <BRAND X> before receiving EDI bulks and release orders, but if we have been utilizing their paper process for wholesale contracts, this is going to hit us there as well as within the release purchase order acceptance cycle that they are creating.
There are two paper documents <BRAND X> employs before actually sending orders with delivery instructions - a master purchase order and a cost commitment agreement. The CCA won't be automated now, but is planned for future use.
A Master Purchase Order is also known as a wholesale contract. It does not have delivery instructions and when sent as an inbound 850 document, is identified as 'KC' in the BEG02. A delivery instruction 850 can be sent to give delivery instruction (and act like a release against a bulk for the MPO), and is identified as a BEG02 'SA'.
A replenishment order 850, BEG02 'RE' is generated by <BRAND X>'s Coverage Program, and is to be treated like a delivery instruction 850 with regard to acting as a release against a bulk for the MPO.
<BRAND X> is, in addition, implementing two new documents - the 860 and the 855. The 860 does not present an immediate change in the way we report purchase order changes, but the 855 (Purchase Order Acknowledgement) will be required whenever we receive a Master Purchase Order (BEG02 'KC').
(Outbound Documents 810 and 856 do not reference the Master Purchase Order, but only any replenishment or delivery instruction POs. Replenishment and Delivery Instruction POs will reference the Master PO, of course, as well has having their own unique BEG03.)
Purchase Order Acknowledgment 855 will take the information we receive from the inbound 850 BEG02 KC (and in the future, from the CCA) and return to the customer an acknowledgement that we accept or reject the entire order. It cannot reflect any changes to the order.
There are additional segments being used to identify shipping windows. A CSH with a P2 asks that we ship as soon as possible, regardless of the DTM window provided. A CSH with a P4 does not want us to preship, and to use the ship window provided in the DTM segments. A CSH with a SC requires that all merchandise on the order must be shipped together on one shipment. Any unshipped quantities have to be cancelled at the time of this shipment (and how may be trickiest - you have to use the ship notice). <BRAND X> will also send a CSH with NS in it if we can't substitute at all - without it, authorized substitutions can be done.
They are also going to inform us where the goods are manufactured - because the factories have to be approved by <BRAND X>. (N1 with MF qualifier.) This is both at header and item level, where we might make some items at a different location. This will only show up on the MPO.
The other N1 segments are SF (Ship From), Z7 (Mark For), BT (Bill To), ST (Ship To Party).
They are also going to start utilizing SLN segments to describe a prepack.
It's implied that we can begin testing any or all of these documents immediately, as it also requires us to migrate to 4030 version from our current 3060. Any of the documents we currently have in production will remain there while testing, with parallel copies sent with 'T' flags in 4030.
The usage for the 855 as a header-level acknowledgement does not appear difficult to generate, but the business usage is the stickler. If we simply accept everything automatically, we commit us automatically. (Ugh) Or...if we want customer service to have the option of rejecting a MPO, they will have to have a way of generating that data for us to transmit that night. The 855 is required within 24 hours of receiving the MPO 850 (BEG02 'KC'). It's a yes or no for the order. No changes, and no partial acceptance.
For the 856, it appears that all ship notices will need the TD5 with the ship status - and all cancellations will have to be reflected here. We'll need information out of the TMS (753/754) for the 856. They want us to use the 17-digit VICS BOL.
We have to inform <BRAND X> by March 1st that we can comply with these new requirements, and be ready to test by July 1st.
There does not appear to be a final in-production date.
I can begin the 810 and 856 immediately as there is little change to existing process. I'm most concerned about getting data for the TD5 items we cancel for the outbound 856. The different PO formats and segments may only need to be identified and properly incorporated into the inbound order process, and a small process created to generate the 855 -- but I can't speak for the business application, and we'll have to wait for WSA to get over with before going any further with it.
The 860 will be a report just like everyone else - they can cancel or change anything from an item to the whole order.
I've made a paper copy of the documentation available on the website if anyone wants a copy.
------------
That's what an EDI Administrator gets to do. I also get to do fun things like writing mapping (a template that takes EDI documents in ASCII format and turns them into flat files our database applications can understand), and talking to my counterparts at our trading partners.
As you can see, I need a creative outlet in the *worst* way.
The good news is, this pays well. REAL well. *laughs* But I guess that's self-evident, huh? I mean, who would willingly put up with this day in and day out if it didn't?
Phade, I'm working that proposal - and I'm also considering putting the hosting out to bid, which would require a contract proposal clearly stating what was needed...including on-site hardware, if you want them to provide it. I'm also working this from the angle that this a multi-year committment, and we believe there will be a need for at least ten years.
Happy New Year - I love Horses.
ami - the transition of treasured child to respected adult is often more difficult for the adults already there - and they often act very strangely, and you might feel more than a little left out. They fake you out, I swear it - you're given all these clues all your life on how they express their affection and reassure you that you are doing good things, and all of a sudden, they change the rules. I can feel for the loss of your grandmother...that's really tough. (Shoot, the only red envelope I got this year was from Panda Express. Doesn't that bite?) I'd have killed to have gone to school in a different county...and the last time I saw my Dad, I was 6 years old. If you think it feels weird and you want to do something about it, I would. I would!
EK is gonna work on a new vid! *happy bounce*
And I had to swat Jim this morning. He wants to do a vid to CW McCall's "Convoy." He's sorry.

...what to do, what to do...
2002-02-09 22:00:53
Talked to Phade a buncha buncha while we were both at work earlier this week.
Usually starts out with "Kris, the server is misbehaving...thought you'd like to know..."
And that's how I heard about the VCA...complaints? So I got introduced to the Forum section of the site.
"It's only this...and it's only that...and IT'S NOT FAIR!!!"
And why, oh why are so many people taking this so terribly to heart as a personal attack?
Guys, I could only *see* enough videos to vote in two categories. There isn't even a chance of my votes being a personal slam. And I apologized up front for it. But do I say anything in forum to that effect?
*thinks of gasoline*
No, I don't think so.
And I've seen this before...in every award competition where a group "self-elected" their own awards. People felt personally attacked when they didn't win. Accused people of lying, cheating and other equally unacceptable behaviors. It's the same...whether it was fan fiction, publishing of a fanzine, costumes...and now, music videos.
Road rage.
And so unnecessary. What a waste...unless you enjoy a good fight.
*thinks some more*
I think some additional tools are needed to even things up - yes, it is very difficult to see everyone's videos. VERY difficult. Without the "Most Popular List," I'd have been toast. But is that the best way to see what's out there? No effin' way.
Odorikuruu is lovely. Failed Attempts is funny as hell.
But I stumbled across Aluminum's Desert Rose and THAT one has been on the repeat loop. It's barely on the Popular List, and I just love it.
If I hadn't used another method to search the database, I would never have found it.
I like some of Aluminum's other stuff, and I like Sting. And I know Sailor Moon (who doesn't, you'd have to be living under a rock...) - so, I downloaded it and was totally amazed at how much you can do with so very little to work with. And he reused footage at least three times in some cases...but he got the story told, the feelings across and I just love watching it.
Not up for voting.
There needs to be a "now showing" section - this is new this week, this month...not by how often it's mentioned. Creators are stuck plugging their stuff in the forums or their journals...or go without. I'm sure it is on the to-do list...but it has to be bumped up. Not all of the adolescent egocentricism is without cause - be that what it is in all its textbook glory -
We have to be able to see more, to do more. Until then, for a lot of good reasons, those saying the VCA is a popularity contest are more right than wrong.
...but how do I say that and tell these guys not to take it personally at the same time?
