It seemed random as far as the storyline went, cause the music had almost nothing to do with the main storyline. It seems like they just threw in random stuff and characters just so they could use various songs, and the whole movie came off very disjointed because of it.
However the way they used the songs was like a pun that wouldn't end, lyrics showed up in the talking bits as well. I think original Beetles fans wouldn't be happy with it.
There are neat visuals spliced through out the whole thing almost. Actually I kinda wish that were more, they could have done some very neat visual things if it weren't for the story getting in the way. For a movie thats just over 2 hours it felt really long like it wasn't going to end.
In comparison, the visuals and songs in Moulin Rouge actually moved the story along, where as in here it was more like "lets see what interesting things we can do with the video this time" and a lot of metaphor and such...
If you are an artsty bastard you might like that sort of stuff.. but the metaphors were really blatant, such as recruits carrying the statue of liberty over "Vietnam" -which was all scale model sized trees? - singing "she's so heavy", the lyric sync that was too uh literal that made it funny. It also felt like it was directed by random different people because the styles of the visuals all felt very different...
They also tried to pick up on that Moulin Rouge thing with the beginning, "would anyone like to hear my story" and the dude sounded similar to Ewan McGregor too.
However it reminds me of remix culture and taking one medium and blending it with another that it wasn't meant for and I can sort of appreciate it as some kind of mainstream version of a fan musical in a way... or like an amv, because its blatantly obvious that the music wasn't meant for this story, or else the story and the music might be more congruent.
I kind of liked it, but I wouldn't call the movie anything too special. It felt like it was trying too hard and often fell flat. If the story wasn't there I might have been able to appreciate the musical bits a lot more. -
