JOURNAL: Sh0ckbyte (Charles Chappell)

  • Ode to Otakudom... 2001-11-18 05:45:35 After spending my entire saturday (It's now 2:45am local time) reviewing and capturing scenes from Maze for my second video, I have made the following conclusions:
    1. Disc D was mastered badly around episode 2 or 3... can't remember... the one where gorgeous dies... too lazy to check right at the moment, my eyes are still killing me.
    2. I really should spend more time with my GF, and doing homework.

In any event, I got more footage captured than I really know what to do with. Semi-Charmed Life is a 4.5 minute song... I have 9.33 gigs of DV captures from DVD sources, (Yes, I do the A->D then D->A conversion with RCA... sorry, I'm not so much of a perfectionist to encode directly from the DVD, it takes forever!) which, when you equate that roughly 1GB = 5 minutes, you end up with about 10 times as much footage as I really need. Assuming 20% of the footage gets trimmed, (which is about average... I'm pretty generous with capturing more than I need) that's still 8 times as much footage as I need... oh boy my hard disk is going to be killing me soon.

The Ranma video incidently had a ratio of 4:1 for captured footage vs finished product. (since it was cuts only, finished size is just a little bigger than the footage I actually used)

In any event, since the primary captures are all done, it should be another couple of weeks before I finish editing the first rough cut. I'll do some pick up captures after that, and probably have a finished video in about another month and a half if finals don't kill me first. (which they likely will) So in reality, expect the Maze video to be done around January.

For anyone that hasn't seen Maze yet, the next posting of the Maze video WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. Sorry, that's how the song and the series both finish.
  • After some confusion... 2001-11-16 02:03:22 I have finally gotten my account setup and video uploaded. I'm working on an additional video that I'll upload the first test files from shortly.

Basically the goal of the Ranma video was to teach me timing and editing. No special effects (with the exception of the ending), time distortion, etc, just straight cuts. Because of this, the video isn't as spectacular as it could be, but it's not cheezy looking either.

My second music video is from a favorate of mine called Maze of the Haze that has finally been released state side, though slightly clipped. (The Duelugar summoning was reanimated I've been told.) Unfortunately, I'm already halfway through the editing with my old VCD fansubs... HRMPH, and the box set is expensive... but I have money, so I'll upload my current video tests and re-edit.

At least everyone will have some idea of what I'm up to that way.
