  • Subtitling is evil... 2002-05-20 03:56:56 Otter Matsuri, basically a mini-con that some classmates of mine put on this year, went off reasonably well. Due to the lack of advertizing (mainly due to the fact that we only knew a month and a half ago that this was going to happen), crowd turnout was expectedly low, but we had quite a bit of interest in the lion dance, and our feature film, Chi no Tsuki. (Blood Moon)

Notably, I did subtitles for two films shown. The first being a series that *TO MY KNOWLEDGE* hasn't been released state side called Violinist of Hamelin, and also for Chi no Tsuki. This process took three days, and afterwords, it hurt to step outside, much less actually look in the general direction of the sun.

In the process, I missed being with my girlfriend on her birthday (grrr), but it wouldn't have gotten done otherwise.

In truth, this counts as my first real subtitle (I don't count Digi-Charat because #1, it's not done yet, and #2, it's pathetically short, and #3, it's already been done), and for that, I was given the honor of receiving the high quality VHS tape I recorded this to. (grrr) Ok, to be fair, I have a DV copy too, both master and with subtitles, the master recorded from an LD player, and the subtitled version recorded from my computer (LD to DV, DV to computer, subtitled, DV out, DV to VHS is basically how the conversion went)

In any event, I'd advise against subtitling even a thirty minute piece in a day and a half like I was forced to... you start making stupid mistakes, and put snide remarks in the titles. (I managed to restrain myself to only two snide comments)

As I said in the subject line... Subtitling is evil...
  • Progress or lack thereof 2002-05-05 03:11:49 Ok, the Tenchi Video virtually hit a brick wall... I've been playing with the timing because it just looks weird right now.

In other news I've been furiously reading book after book about the Intel Itanium Platform, and Operating System Theory. Needless to say, I'm quite frazzled, and will be for a while. I'm estimating this little project of mine (not the AMV) will take two years to complete, but at least that's not a conservative estimate.

I will resume work on "I think we're alone Tenchi" tomorrow if my girlfriend doesn't intervene first, and will probably get another 20-30 seconds done tomorrow. As of right now I'm actually two verses into the song, and the intro looks better than it did. (I got the sense before that I was watching untimed flashes, which I knew they weren't, but it still looked that way)

I won't be posting my progress here like I have my prior videos I'm afraid, but I MAY make demo reels availible on a temporary basis on my home page. (Which I finally created... and need to figure out a better template for)
  • I think we're alone Tenchi 2002-04-17 00:02:59 Ok, I have to admit, my last journal entry describing this video may not be entirely correct anymore. Let's just say I've been having some fun with love triangles after watching the OAV series of Tenchi Muyo from beginning to (nearly... will finish it tomorrow) end.

I'll keep that part a suprise until I actually premeire the video. The moment of truth: It will probably be about 2-3 months before this video is actually finished. Why you ask? Because I've chosen to spend a lot of time on this video. The first 8 seconds of actual video (which I've now declared finalized... no the test version is not the finalized version) took roughly 3 hours to complete, and I didn't include any special effects or frame painting, something this video will have a little bit of.

In any event, I need to plan the main portion of the video, and right now I'm too tired to deal with the planning steps nessisary, so I'm going to sleep.

No, the main video won't have quite so many fast cuts as the first 8 seconds (thankfully) and yes, you might want to beware my Tenchi video if you have epilepsy and a fast computer. (I'm really not kidding... don't say I didn't warn ya!)
  • Maze video FINALLY complete. 2002-02-10 00:23:57 With the maze video behind me, I can turn my attention toward my next video, featuring... Tenchi Muyo... which happens to be one of the series showing this semester in the Anime Club.

In any event, I'm happy the Maze video is done, as it was starting to drive me a little batty... that and some last minute technical issues. Enjoy the video, show it to your dog, etc. I had a lot of fun making it!

Insofar as my next video, I've decided the main love interest of Tenchi in my video is going to be Ryoko, (as if that's really a suprise with how forward she is) and am already capturing footage from Tenchi in Tokyo for use in the video, bringing the anime source count up to three: OAVs, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo. I haven't decided whether I'm using footage from the movies yet, but they seem unlikely candidates for what I'm looking for, so probably not.

This video will have some interesting points however in that I'm finally allowing myself to do frame creation and painting. This means there will be synthetic elements in parts of the video, and I have no idea how good/bad that's going to look yet. I'll release some of my test outputs as I go (encoded to DIVX format as always... wouldn't want to choke all of you on my DV masters) so you guys can tell me how I'm doing.
  • Getting back to club stuff, and finishing Maze video. 2002-01-19 15:59:17 Ok, the official word is that my Maze music video (for which the NEARLY completed version is online) will be premeried in it's final form on the 29th of January. Why you ask? This is the first day of Anime Club at CSUMB. So my video is premeiring there, at which point I return to my computer to finish linking the new video into the web site.

In other news, my Tenchi video is coming along nicely. I'm not going to be uploading preview versions like I have with the Maze video mainly because I do intend to enter it in some of the AMV contests, mainly Fanime 2k2. (And I've STILL gotten no reply from them... grrr)

I'm expecting that video to take quite a while, so it's a good question whether it will be done by the Fanime deadline or not, but I intend to make time when possible. Thats all I think so TTFN.
