JOURNAL: Bowler

  • Is he strong? Listenen, bub. He's got.... 2002-05-04 13:37:13 ...*genetically* altered blood?

Hey there, there goes the Spider-Man.

Saw the movie last night. I got all teary eyed. I forgot how much I *LOVED* Spider-Man as a kid. If I can find the picture of me in the Spidey costume my Mom made for me back in 2nd grade, I'll post it, because it rocks most hard. I was the envy of every red-blooded Marvel reading kid in town. Seriously.

But back to the movie. It just plain rocked. Granted, there were some smallish re-writes to the history of Peter Parker to make him more contemporary, but WOW did they ever stay true to the character. I couldn't believe how much they nailed the whole Power vs. Responsibility angle.

Sam Raimi is my new god. That guy is a bigger Spider-Man fan than I was. There's this part in the movie (without giving away any spoilers) where his mask gets ripped in a very specific fashion. Raimi is such a fan-boy he made sure that the mask gets ripped in *EXACTLY* the same way that it did in an old battle with the Hobgoblin (different villain than movie). It might sound unimportant, but the fact that when I saw how it was ripped I said "oh my GOD HE CARES!" makes it a huge deal for me :)

I should preface all of this drooling over the movie with the fact that I appreciated it from an old fan-boy basis. Liz enjoyed it, but I know she didn't have as good of a time at it as I did. She never read the entire Romita Jr. (and a good chunk of the Romita Sr.) Amazing Spider-Man era, along with collecting Spectacular Spider-Man when it came out (long live the Hobgoblin story arc!), and even Web of Spider-Man (anyone remember that one?). Me = big old Spider-Man Nerd. I'll prove it with that photo should I be able to find it.

I wish to god I had never sold my old comic book collection now. I shouldn't say "now," since I regretted selling it even as I was taking the money from the store-owner, but I was at the end of my rope money-wise back then, and if I had some parents that I lived with who cared back then, they would have stopped me from selling my collection and just given me some money (my parents are great...I just wasn't living with them then).

I had *so* many Spidey comics. I want to go back and re-read them all now, but I can't. ::sniff:: poor me.

If they weren't so expensive, I might even go and buy them all on back issue. Oh wait. I forgot. I don't have any money. D'oh!

Oh, and I'm going to finally write Lileks. For the longest time, I've wanted to write him, but it would only come off as a gushing "Gorsh! I'm such a big fan of your Bleat! and the rest of your site!" type email, which would be appreciated and then (rightfully) forgotten along the rest of the gushing fanmail.

But he talked about animation in Friday's Bleat!. He was perfectly accurate in all of his assesments regarding animation and its progression through the ages, but he just lacked the facts behind his observations (which I'm sure he's well aware of). So now I finally have something to talk to him about! :) We'll see if I get a reply back.

Kyburg: I'm still working on mailing that CD off and doing the Jane fanart. Sorry I'm taking so long.

Amizadai: Holy WOW that was cool. Well, not cool in the sense that it was cool, but cool in the "You had an adventure!" sense. I'm glad you and everyone else made it out of there O.K. And now you have a nifty conversation piece! :)
  • Yar. We be pirates who say Yar. 2002-05-03 01:44:44 It's another middle of the night entry.

I'm almost done with the first third of the Spike Bebop vid. I blocked in some new stuff tonight (the beginning of that pan/truck/zoom monstrosity) and put in an entire section that comes after it.

I still need to rip those zooming pan shots, though.

I also need to go in and re-tweak some quick cuts. Quick lesson learned: you cannot make quick cuts (cuts less than 10 frames each) when the action within the cuts has "strobing"/flashing lights in it. Makes the cuts illegible/unreadable.

I'm not going in to work tomorrow. I feel icky, and there's nothing to do anyway. Maybe I can work on this vid some more. I'd be *very* excited if I got it to the 1/3 done point by tomorrow night.

    Oh, and some very nice guy linked to my site. www.possumtoy.com. In just the course of six hours, his link generated more hits than I get in a month O_o;
  • I don't think so. 2002-05-02 01:21:25 So I decided not to wallow in my self-pity and get back to work on the Spike vid. I'm really enjoying my Freshman effort in video editing. I hate making the clips (who doesn't?) and I didn't follow some sage advice I received early on (mainly because I wasn't sure how to go about it) and I'm working in 720-480 mode with only 6G of hard disk space to spare, but I found that if I keep rendering my work area, that it moves along fine (albeit a bit slowly).

    Edit, render, repeat.

I got almost the entire intro-intro done. Lots of Spike on stairs to the beat of a snare drum. Now I need to scan all of the eps for zoom/establishing shots for the rest of the intro. This part is going to be ugly. I'll have to rip a vob, rip the zooming shots out of it, and erase it so I have room to rip the next one. Ugh.
  • Sweet Mother of God. 2002-05-01 23:22:01 I'm fat.

I pulled out a guy's scale at work today and stood on it.

    230.

Two effin' THIRTY. I thought I weighed too much when I weighed 205. So I started lifting weights thinking that would help. Heavy weights. To the point where benching the stack didn't do it for me anymore, so I started going to the gym to lift even more weights (and do about 40 mins of cardio). Evidently muscle weighs a LOT. But who am I kidding? I'd wager I need to lose at LEAST 20 pounds. Probably more like 30. I thought by lifting weights I'd exchange muscle for fat. Turns out I added muscle, kept the fat, and then added even more fat. Wheeee!

So now I have to figure out a five day/week workout routine that is almost all cardio and no weightlifting. I think I'll still do bench/fly/arm stuff, but that's about it. I also need to switch to a much healthier diet. All I can think of are salads and rice cakes. Gah.

Sorry no video info. I'm pretty bummed about being fat.
  • Just a quick note. 2002-04-30 18:46:17 Kyburg: I wish I had the designs still. I had a *serious* struggle with Jade, since they wanted her to be like, 14 or something, yet act like she was 18. I think in the end I wound up trying to make her with an oversized T-shirt and long shorts (the ones that go down over the knees), big clunky hiking boots, and twin pig-tails. Lots of watches/bracelets to bulk up the hands (so they had the same visual weight as the clunky boots). I tried to get that cute/mature combo platter down. I think she was my weakest character design by far. If I have time tonight I might try re-drawing her for the hella it.

And I'm LOL at your last title thread. I once played Mechwarrior (even worse than Battletech since you now have a vested insterest in keeping your character and mech alive) with a perfectionist. He was also an emotional sadist, evidently, as he wanted to see eveyrone's character die (He was the GM). It seemed he was more interested in sticking to the strictness of the rules and the absolute likelyhood of death than the players having fun. It did not go very well.

EK: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I've been looking like mad (well, no. More like *wanting* like mad) for a live Tank! performance from YK and da Seatbeltsu. I've been listening to it ALL DAY. I may just burn it to a CD so I can listen to it for an hour in the car on the way home.

I have giddy-tree-house visions of myself in Pep Band back in High School performing that song to a sold out Basketball High School stadium. Not that I played any of the instruments that they use in Tank! (Double B Flat Tuba), mind you, but I would have taken up a crash course on the Trumpet (again) and I even would have started smoking just so I could pull off the opening dialog line.

Excuse me, but I have to get everybody and their stuff together.
