JOURNAL: Kusoyaro (Hsien Lee)

  • i don't want to feel this way forever...a dead letter marked "return to sender"... 2001-10-23 13:41:05 Sigh...my computer is giving me issues again, after being "good" for about 6 months. Then I bought a new CD-R drive and a third hard drive. Unfortunately, this meant that I didn't have enough IDE slots for both. So I left my case open, and I only kept one hooked up to the IDE cable at a time...which worked fine! I made Dreams of Earth on my new hard drive, then turned off the computer and switched the cable so I could burn some CDs. And it was all well and good like that for about a month., lots of back and forth switching with no problems. After AWA I took a break from video editing, so I've had the CD-R drive hooked up for the past month. Now I've started a new video, so I switched it back to the hard drive...and now the computer keeps freezing! I'll hear the new drive whine and click, and then my entire computer will just die. So now I'm capturing to my trusty old D drive (screw E and F!), and hoping I have the space for the 44 episodes worth that I have left to capture from. Goddamnit. Can't wait til Leandra's older sis builds me that new computer...just need some money!!!!

I can't find a single decent oriental grocery store in Glen Burnie. The two places I can find only sell Korean stuff. Can't even get some decent ramen ;_; Looking up places in Elkridge, Ellicott City or Columbia...all these places are like half an hour away >_< Maybe I'll make an excursion some time this weekend. Glen Burnie is such a culinary wasteland.

Had a very interesting encounter with the guy who lives in the apartment beneath mine the other day. It started out normal enough, he introduced himself, asked me to stop by if I ever wanted to have a drink and hang out, etc. Then it got weird:

Neighbor: Oh, if you ever want a woman, just let me know and I can hook you up.
    Me: Uh, nah that's okay.
Neighbor: Naw man, I know where to find a lot of bitches, I mean a LOT of bitches! Right down the street, in fact.
Me: No thanks, I've already got a girlfriend.
Neighbor: Hey, you ain't gotta fuck if you doan wanna, you can just lay back and let them massage ya.
Me: <fake chuckle> Hehe alright, well I gotta get inside and make a phone call.
    Neighbor: Alright, peace yo.

Gee...I hope the guy's just a very satisfied customer who wants to share the wealth...and not an actual pimp :S

Argh. Lunch was a lot quicker than I expected, so I stopped at Best Buy on the way back to see what new DVDs were out (it IS Tuesday, after all)...I am now the not-so-proud owner of the Final Fantasy movie on DVD. I thought the movie sucked! But...but...it said *FINAL FANTASY* on the DVD cover, so I was helpless. A helpless geek. Actually, I admit with shame that the main reason I bought it was probably so I could see how good it looked on my new DVD player. Grrrr...I'd like to do a short video, but no matter how quickly I did it, it would quickly be sucked into the maelstrom of astonishingly BAD videos that are sure to come out in the coming days/weeks. Such is the woeful way of the AMV community nowadays.

Reading EK's post yesterday gave me a strange compulsion to dust off my Revolver CD and listen to it while driving during lunch today. While I like all the Beatles' albums, I was astonished that I had never before realized how many gems were on this one. Paul in particular shines on this album. "Here, There and Everywhere" and "For No One" are two songs that have always made me all sappy. I don't see how I could have overlooked "For No One" a year and a half ago >_< I think I heard "For No One" while watching the Beatles Anthology 4 or 5 years ago (whenever it came out) and decided to buy Revolver because of it. I was also reminded today of that time back in high school when one of the aides from the main office came into our classroom to deliver a fax to the teacher...he was singing, "I'm the faxman...yeah I'm the faxman!" When half of the class looked at him strangely, he replied "Oh, it's an old song, none of you would know it." Leandra probably would have been mildly offended, but I thought it was funny ^_^

The post office near where I work (not the one I normally go to) is now closed because of anthrax concerns. Jesus christ. Cowardice. FUCKING cowardice (terrorists, not post office).

I guess most people aren't too worried yet because it's all been along the eastern seaboard so far, and mostly concentrated around the DC area.
  • the day breaks...your mind aches... 2001-10-23 09:36:51 Holy shit. EK is a Photoshop goddess. That's all I can say about the matter for now.
  • dorothy's last fling didn't mean anything...except to drag queens in ball gowns... 2001-10-22 13:57:36 Been talking to Bill Milberry a bit about Premiere lately. I think I've nailed down at least *some* of what I dislike about it. It seems to boil down to mainly aesthetics and a general "icky" feeling I get when I use the program. For instance, I like how in Ulead I can maximize the timeline window so that all video tracks are at the very top of the screen and audio tracks are at the very bottom...and all other windows, such as trim window, filters, transitions, etc., are nestled in between. Very shallow difference, but it just feels...*off* when I have to edit in a separate window at the bottom half of the screen (moving it to the top makes no difference in the "off" feeling). I also don't like how big (ie, vertical size) the tracks are...they're so skinny, they don't feel like real video clips...God I sound like an idiot. I can change the size of the tracks, but then they're too big. Moving clips around in the timeline is very awkward too. It feels "slippery" compared to Ulead, and I can't put my finger on why. And then there's the trim tool, which feels sooo incredibly clumsy to me for some reason. It feels like I'm pushing/pulling the ends of the video clips with a 40-50 frame precision or something (large exaggeration, but you get the idea). And that whole stupid thing where, when you pull a new clip into the timeline, it scrolls alllll the way to the end of the clip, and then you have to scroll allllll the way back to where you were doing your actual editing. Maybe there's a way to change that, I haven't had the patience to find out. One last bitch before I stop; when I'm playing through the audio track in the timeline and I want to stop at a certain spot in the audio (by pressing Esc), it stops at a slightly different spot EVERY TIME! When I finally decide to just pick one of the stop spots to do my edit, it's invariably off. Don't try and tell me that I'm simply timing my key presses wrong, I could do it in Ulead and it'd stop at the same spot 80-90% of the time, and it'd be the exact spot I wanted.

Okay, that's all. <sigh> I guess it's just a matter of becoming intimately familiar with a particular piece of software over the course of 2 and a half years, and then having to switch suddenly. I'm sure Premiere users who switch to Ulead would have just as many complaints. I just get a very pervasive feeling of not having any actual control over the video when I'm doing it in Premiere. It's kinda like this: clasp your hands together like you're about to say grace at dinner or something. Now, unclasp and then reclasp them again with all your fingers shifted down one...so that all the same fingers are still lined up with each other. Doesn't feel right, does it? That's how Premiere feels to me :Þ

    I make no sense.
  • you know that what you eat, you are...but what is sweet now, turns so sour.. 2001-10-22 10:39:26 I suddenly have a wicked craving for some really greasy potato chips. How weird, considering I don't normally eat potato chips and haven't done so in months.

And I don't even smoke pot, either. ^_-
  • candy cane walks down...to build a bonfire to break my fall... 2001-10-22 10:33:04 What a relaxing weekend...did nothing productive...watched a lot of anime and played lots of Final Fantasy (both 6 and 9).

Okay, what the hell is up with the DVD cover art and opening for Black Heaven? Can you get any more misleading than that? After seeing the DVD covers and watching the opening, I was expecting something very dark, surreal, and eerily campy...kind of a mix between Lain and...well, Lain with space aliens and guitars, basically. Instead, I got one of the most charming (for lack of a better word) animes I've seen in a long, long time. You have to accept a lot of things at face value (one man playing his guitar can help combat space aliens), and the ending is rushed and predictable, but some of the characters are developed wonderfully, and I loved the show from start to finish.

Started capturing last night for my new FY vid. 7 episodes down, only 45 left to go o_0 Damn I hate capturing. I predict that just the capturing alone will take me 3-4 weeks, since I'll procrastinate and waste time doing other things. After that the editing should only take a week or so. This video is too well mapped out for me already. I'm going to twist around the story a bit...Miaka will become a cheating whore, and Tamahome a simpering cuckold! Then I'll go back and finish up the year-old Karekano project, and I'll finally be able to start work on the two new projects that I'm so excited about. I'm getting too many new video ideas nowadays...how about a short, fun Black Heaven video set to the Sgt. Pepper's reprise? ^_^

Decided to drop my recent wack-ass idea for a Berserk video..."Deep Enough" by Live. Not even passionate romance stuff between Gatsu and Caska. Plus, I didn't want to struggle with the section of the lyrics that talk about getting it on in the middle of a club.

Had a strange dream this morning at around 7:20, just before my alarm clock went off at 7:30; dreamt that my alarm clock went off, I got up and got dressed and ready for work...everything was exact in detail and perfectly normal, except for a surreal moment when my belt wouldn't buckle up correctly. And then my parents were in my apartment for some reason, begging me not to go to work because they had just heard on the news that a bomb attack was planned on the very building I work in. My reply to them was something pathetic like "Well I can't take any more days off, I've already used up all of my vacation days." Then I woke up for real...and while I was getting dressed (again, sort of), it made me think of old Calvin & Hobbes strips...the dreaming of getting up and getting dressed part, not the bomb threat part.

Okay, I feel like a dork for thinking this, but when EK mentioned going to Ocean's 11, I thought she meant that she and her friends had somehow gotten a very early sneak peek at the MOVIE that's coming out in December. Silly me.
