  • words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup... 2001-11-26 11:57:23 To add my 2 cents to the days-old dokidoki/BBT discussion:

I remember when I was in middle school, I heard the assistant principal say over the PA: "Everyone, please report to the Li-bary for class pictures."
In high school, my redneck principal once said "Now let's congratulate the men's rasslin' team on ...blah blah"

Lessee...there's also Febyooary, and believe it or not, mis-CHEE-vious is wrong (though m-w.com kindasorta defends its usage).

I find it funny that Tim started this discussion, since he doesn't even know how to spell the word "color" ^_^
  • pop tart...what's our mission? 2001-11-26 10:39:45 What a lazy break ^_^

Wednesday: Left work around 1 PM to head down to Duke. Traffic actually wasn't horrid, and it only took me 2 hours longer than usual to get there. Got to Jay's empty apartment and sat down to download tons of stuff on his computer...then I realized he didn't have his CD burner installed. Drat. Then I headed over to the Japanese Hall and helped Charlene make pies for the big Thanksgiving dinner she was cooking for all her friends that stayed on campus during the break. Leandra had forgotten that I was going to be hanging out at her sister's dorm that evening, so when she called, I handed the phone to Charlene, which freaked Leandra out at first ^_^ Then they started rattling off high-speed Thai...apparently they were talking about me :Þ Afterwards, Charlene and I had personal things to talk about, which went until about 5 am. Went back to Jay's apartment and slept for about 3 hours.

Thursday-Saturday: Woke up early, drove to my parents' house. The next 3 days were a haze of video games, reading, and pumpkin pie. Oh yeah, and I saw Spy Game with my dad on Friday.

Spy Game: Hmmm...my dad really liked it. It was a really different movie than the trailers led me to believe. I was expecting some kind of intricate spy thriller. I guess that was maybe half of it. Or maybe more like a third. I didn't expect the main arc of the story to involve Robert Redford arguing with his superiors in the offices of the CIA. All that spy stuff in the trailers is told in flashbacks to explain why Brad Pitt's character is imprisoned in the first place. The movie was okay, I guess. Oh yeah, and Tony Scott's unwelcome mark was all over the place...apparently he got confused and thought he was making Enemy of the State 2. Steve Soderbergh would have been better for the material. Vanilla Sky had a fantastic trailer. I'm expecting good things from Cameron Crowe.

Reading: Read the first Harry Potter book, as I promised myself I would do before seeing the movie. Another one of those "it was okay, I guess" sort of deals. Unless the second one is much better, that's going to be it for me. Read about 1/3 of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, which I really like so far. Whenever I try to explain to someone what it's about it sounds really corny, but somehow Gaiman makes it work.

Video Games: My dad, who has never ever shown the least bit of interest in any video game in his entire life, was suddenly transfixed when I played a bit of Ico after dinner one night. 5 minutes after I turned on the game, both he and my brother glued to the couch, giving me advice and congratulating me when I solved puzzles. "Move that block over there! Ohh, watch out, the girl's running away! Try climbing that rock! Light your stick on that torch! Oooh, good thinking!" It was mighty funny.
Thursday night, Jay and his friend Jonathan made the mistake of renting Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. That basically ate up the entire weekend. I'm talking 2 or 3 PM to 4 or 5 AM, DAILY. I was mostly curled up on the couch reading, taking the occasional break to break my neck on the virtual skateboard, but Jay and his friends tore that game up.

Pumpkin Pie: My God, there was so much pumpkin pie! The 4 of us went through 3 pies over the weekend. My mom buys them at a place that makes them fresh from scratch. And by scratch, I mean that they literally haul fresh pumpkins into the back of the store. Definitely going to have to hit the gym...then again, I'm sure everyone feels that way after Thanksgiving. Like Leandra says, "Everyone's supposed to eat a lot on Thanksgiving! It's their job!" ^_^ Well, I guess I'll hit the gym NEXT week, not this week...I'm behind on hours now, so I have to work late every day this week :(

Sunday: Stopped by Duke to drop off my DDR stuff. Charlene & co. begged me to let them borrow it til Christmas, since I can't play it at my apartment. Got sidetracked by Char and ended up hanging out with her for a couple of hours. Grabbed a quick dinner at the Japan Express near campus (food sucks, but I miss that place ^_^), then made the drive back up to Maryland. Talked to Leandra for a really long time, then went to bed really late. I'm tired this morning.

Well now, depending on how much money I spend for Christmas, in January I'll hopefully have enough money for Charlene to build me that new computer. Speaking of which, anyone wanna take a look at my Amazon.com wish list? :-D

In a little over an hour I'm going to the post office to pick up my held mail, where ::dun dun dun:: my new Smashing Pumpkins CD and DVD should be waiting for me!
  • D-U-K-E, who the fuck you came to see? Duke Duke, muthafucka.... 2001-11-21 10:19:01 I stopped at a local bar last night while I was waiting for my laundry to dry. Duke was playing U. of South Carolina on the TV...somehow the score was TIED, and Duke was playing like total ass. As soon as I started watching, Mike Dunleavy started dominating the court, and the half ended with Duke leading by 19. Duke always seems to do well when I'm watching ^_^ I started seriously watching Duke b-ball around the ACC tournament last season, and they won every game from that point on, including the national championship. If we make it into the championship game again this year, I'm taking the day off work to join the celebration in Durham :) When we won this past year, my friend Jen supposedly got an awesome picture of me standing in front of the bonfire holding a beer and a cigarette...she was going to put it in the yearbook, but someone's elbow was blocking half of my leg or something, and her roommate Linette (the editor-in-chief of the yearbook) said that was unacceptable. What a party it was, though...a bunch of us went to Armadillo Grille (a restaurant/bar on campus) and loaded up on beers until they closed...then we went to the Hideaway (another bar on campus, now closed, RIP :( ) to get more beers...and I remember at one point some random guy walked up to me and was like, "Hey dude, wanna Heineken? I haven't opened it yet." Who was I to refuse? Duke knows how to celebrate when it comes to basketball. I could have done without the naked frat boys running around the bonfire, but that's just me. Maybe one of these days I'll talk about the 2-month tenting ordeal that was required to get tickets to the games...RYS knows all about it ("I'm on vacation, and I'm standing out in the rain pitching a fucking tent??") ^_^
This year, I won't be able to watch the games until I get cable, which will hopefully be the weekend after next...

  • the amazing sounds of the killing hoards... 2001-11-21 09:47:27 Urgh...just 3 or 4 more hours at work, and then I can leave early and head for Duke. I'm staying with Jay, and I've brought a whole spindle of CD-Rs so I can download AMVs and stuff and burn them onto CD...I miss a T1 connection! I'll probably go hang out with my girlfriend's sister at some point...
Not looking forward to the drive, though. Being caught in traffic is assured...just HOW MUCH traffic is what I'm worried about. The 4.5-hour drive to Duke once took me 7 hours on a normal Sunday afternoon...I shudder to think how long Thanksgiving traffic will have me held up. I've got all my Radiohead and Beatles CDs in the car and ready to go, plus my Best of Miyazaki CD...great disc, some classic BGM and lots of beautiful vocal tracks.

I'm a complete Metal Gear Solid 2 crack addict. Haven't played a game this much since...hmmm...Final Fantasy 7. Though I didn't like FF7 as much...I spent about 60% of that game waiting for it to get GOOD. I don't like the fact that so far I've spent as much time controlling Raiden as I've spent controlling Snake, though. Raiden is what Leandra would call a "wimpy doo-da," while Snake is a full-blooded badass.

And I read yesterday that FFX is coming out in January...that's too soon!! Not enough time to finish the games I'm currently working on...
Also, I don't remember if I said it before, but the FFX preview on the FF:The Spirits Within DVD was almost worth the price of the DVD...it looks fucking unbelievable! 10x better than the movie, IMHO. There was a shot of an amazing multi-level tropical city, and that shot with the girl twirling around in the water CANNOT be done justice in those little MPEGs that are floating around the net.

Mostly recovered now from rugby and the resulting cold...can't wait to play again :)

Hehe...boss just came in to chat with me for a bit...I asked him some questions about the stuff I'm currently working on, and he explained it and then said "Bah, but I wouldn't worry about it today. It's Thanksgiving Wednesday! If you wanna take off at any time today, feel free." Then we chatted a bit about med school (he's amazed that I would take all the required courses, do well on my MCATs, and then not apply), and he sauntered off to waste more time talking to people. He's laid back and cool like that...and along with this nice, cushy cubicle...I love this new assignment :)

And that DanceDance_Revolutionary guy has no freaking clue what he's talking about.
  • who wants honey? as long as there's some money... 2001-11-20 09:25:14 I just found out last night that one of my paychecks from a summer job back in '97 was never cashed. And now, over 4 years later, the honest folks at CVS/Pharmacy have been kind enough to inform my mother. So when I go to my parents' house for Thanksgiving, I'll be the proud recipient of 150 smackers! Woohoo...that'll put a small dent in this month's bills ^_^;;

Still have no idea why Quu wanted me to post a journal entry last night. Apparently he told 3 or 4 others to do so, as well.

Sigh...tomorrow's gonna suck. 5-10 hour drive (depending on traffic) to Duke...
