JOURNAL: Kusoyaro (Hsien Lee)

  • a connecting principle...linked to the invisible...almost imperceptible...something inexpressible... 2002-02-25 15:07:19 EK: Spooky. You and Brett live in Austin, right? If that was just a *bit* closer to Dallas, they probably would have bought it at the same place, which would have just been scary :)
  • hearts of fire...streets of stone...modern warriors...saddle-iron horses of chrome.. 2002-02-25 14:41:10 My head hurts.

Let me tell you that driving 22 hours straight, with only bathroom, food and gas breaks, SUCKS. I pulled out of my apartment parking lot at 10 AM last Saturday, and arrived in Dallas at 7 AM (8 AM Eastern time) Sunday morning. Around the time I passed Texarkana and crossed the Texas border, I began hallucinating from physical and mental exhaustion. I spent the last 2 hours of the drive frequently swerving to avoid phantom cats crossing the road and beams of light that I mistook for poles and signs. I left Dallas this past Saturday night at 9 PM Dallas time, and got home at 10 PM last night. And now here I am, back at work. Argh.

It was all worth it, of course, even if Leandra says that if I ever pull a silly driving stunt like that again, she'll never let me visit her again :)

Got to Dallas at 7 AM last Sunday, immediately crashed, and then woke up at noon to watch half of the Duke vs. Maryland game. Left at halftime to pick up Leandra, and got the bad news later that night. This morning when I came into work, I found that my supervisor had taped newspaper clippings about Maryland's victory all over my desk. And computer. Cheeky bastard ^_^ Byron Mouton is shaking a fist at me from the side of my monitor and Chris Wilcox is dunking over Carlos Boozer and Jason Williams right above my head.

Anyways, lots of fun adventures in Dallas. I accidentally set Leandra's glasses on fire (don't ask), and I insisted on buying her a new pair. I just about had a heart attack at the $400 price tag, but luckily it was still on warranty, so it cost a lot less than that.

It's always the smallest things that are the best; sitting side by side, me reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire while she leafed through some history papers...quietly listening to the Smashing Pumpkins' rendition of "Landslide" together...sharing a slice of pie in front of the fireplace in a little cafe...

We saw A Beautiful Mind, and both went into the movie with completely different perspectives, which made it interesting. I knew the background behind the character, so I was constantly looking for signs of his schizophrenia. Leandra, on the other hand, had no idea, and was completely blindsided by the whole mental illness thing. I couldn't tell from which perspective the film was trying to nurture. I liked the film in general and was really impressed with Russell Crowe, but it felt really tailor-made for the Oscars.

I'm now an official pho-natic, BTW. I love a good bowl of noodles, and I had pho for the first time after AnimeUSA with RYS, Maboroshi, Aluminum, Doki Doki and a few others. Alas, there is not a single place I can get pho (or even ANY kind of good noodles) within a 30-minute radius of where I live. Then I arrived in Garland (the suburb of Dallas where Leandra lives) and I found at least 8 different pho places within a 5-block radius. Good God. Needless to say, I had pho every single day I was there. I think on one day I had it for all 3 meals. Poor Leandra, I made her eat it twice with me. Wahahaha. I was determined to make myself sick of it so I wouldn't miss it when I came back to this white-trash shithole. Dunno if I succeeded.

Oh, and I got a belated X-mas gift from Leandra that will make EK jealous...a big die-cast Giant Robo figure! It comes with a little Ginrei figure too. Woooo!

I mentioned Harry Potter above...after the second book I suspected it, after the third book I feared it, and now, in the middle of the fourth book, I'm nearly positive of it. What am I talking about, you ask? Every book in the series is the same!! (mild spoilers for those who haven't read the series)
    1. Harry gets to Hogwarts and strange things happen.
    2. A particularly scary/mysterious/unusual character walks around with "I AM THE VILLAIN" written on his head in Bold, Impact font. They are obviously NOT the villain.
    3. Quidditch
    4. Hagrid haplessly gets into some kind of trouble
    5. There's a new Defense Against Dark Arts teacher
    6. The villain turns out to be an insignificant character that you never could have guessed (I mean geez, Ron's pet mouse??)
    7. The professors forgive Harry for breaking half the rules at the school.
Those don't necessarily happen in that exact order, but all 3.5 books so far have seemed to simply be a fleshed out version of that outline. Mildly entertaining, I guess, but I'm looking forward to going back to the "grown up" stuff.

Oh, that reminds me, am I the ONLY one who thought that Hermione was pronounced "Her-mee-own"?
A call to all Brits out there; is it commonly accepted that Hermione is pronounced "Her-my-knee"? Never heard that name before.

    Trigun SPOILERS

Finished Trigun last week. It was okay, but I found it kind of lame that Knives just sort of hides in the background for almost the entire series and there's all this build-up about him, then he just shows up in the last episode, fights Vash, and loses.

    End SPOILERS

I'm ready to start my Trigun video now. I'm really really REALLY torn on it, though. There are 4 main characters in the video; the hero (Vash, of course), the girl (Millie), the villain, and the savior. I'm am so torn on whether to use Wolfwood as the villain or the savior. There are VERY good arguments for him in either position, but either way I'd still have to fill the other position. Argh. And I might have to "import" a character from Captain Tylor, which I'm hesitant to do. Maybe I'll get lucky and realize this video will never work after I get half an hour into working on it :P

    <just read EK's latest journal entry>
    Wow, thanks, now I'm REALLY glad I didn't show you my latest work, which is now indefinitely on hold and has a 90% chance of being scrapped ^_^;;

Time to answer a week's worth of emails now.
  • i'm on my way...i'm on my way...home sweet home... 2002-02-21 19:09:42 I've decided that if I can only pick two things (or people) to bring with me on a desert island for the rest of my life, it'll be Leandra and pho.

Glen Burnie is such a shithole.
  • got me a raygun...got me an altitude...can't help feeling something's wrong with every one of you... 2002-02-15 14:58:01 TheNanashi: I believe so. I wouldn't have distributed an unfinished version on a CD.

30 minutes til I leave work for Katsucon.

EK: As long as you feel well enough to stare at pretty pictures, you'll be okay with Metropolis :) I was too distracted at the time to follow the story, but it *did* look cool.
  • i've got no car, and it's breaking my heart...but i've found a driver and that's a start.. 2002-02-15 12:14:48 Man...these banners I've been seeing for the past couple of weeks have just been abysmal, but somehow the number of Winners keeps going up.

Anyway, leaving in 3 hours for Katsucon, so I might as well put my Katsucon entry online, right?

    http://www.animemusicvideos.org/video.php?v=4624

Enjoy. I already have one review on it, based on a preview version I put online. I was probably the only person in the history of this site to beg people NOT to leave reviews, and I got one anyway.
But please DO review it now, as it is in its final version. Hopefully I'll get to see it on the big screen tonight...it's not a fantastic video or anything, but I'm still rather excited.

I woke up at 7 am today feeling extremely ill. Went back to sleep, then woke up at 7:30 feeling slightly better...and that's where I am now. Just slightly ill. Then I had a 3-hour meeting which *thankfully* got shortened to 2 hours, but it still sucked, and still had the result of making me feel worse. Which sucks because that means I might have to stem off the wild Katsucon partying planned for tonight :P If you wanna find me at Katsucon, I'll be sporting a black Duke basketball cap!

I had the most bizarre dream last night about a random AMV.org member (who I'm not going to name) who I've never met...he was upset about a review I wrote for him (as I recall, I don't think I've actually ever written a review for him). So I was driving around town, and I saw my review rendered in big 3D letters on the side of the road...and this guy was in a rage, picking up the words and using them to smash everything in sight. Then he saw me and smashed one of the words against my windshield. Then I think I woke up feeling like crap. Weird.
