Some words uttered by my project lead during the (still ongoing, on break right now) 3+ hour meeting today in which our technical lead informed us of inherent problems in the design forced upon us by upper management:
"This isn't going to work."
"This is going to be the end of my career."
Yay.

Dayum, am I fuckin' tired.
I spent a terrifying amount of money in Dallas this past weekend. I somehow spent more in Dallas in 3 days than I spent in Las Vegas/Southern California in 4.5 days. Of course, it might have had to do with the $200 brunch (for 5 people) I treated Leandra's family to. Yep, another meet-the-fam weekend. I finally met her mom face-to-face...apparently she liked me enough that she insisted I stay at her house if I visit again while Leandra is on summer vacation. And she surreptitiously took pictures during unconsciously "cute" moments between Leandra and I during brunch. She also kept insisting on buying me a crate of mangoes (which I love) to take home with me, and I had to keep politely declining, explaining that I couldn't take it on the plane with me. And when Leandra mentioned to her that I had acquired a taste for Thai food, she was impressed with the array of dishes that I professed to like. I guess it's safe to say that she approves of me, which I had NOT been expecting.
So what else happened this past weekend....
Honestly, the entire weekend was just a blur of spending time with Leandra. We didn't *do* a whole lot of specific things, we just spent quality time together. Well, we saw Spider-Man on Friday (second time for me). It was interesting seeing a movie like that with someone who has NO background on Spider-Man whatsoever. I spent $3 winning a Hello Kitty doll for Leandra at one of those claw machines -- good deal too, because the doll would have cost substantially more than $3 at a Sanrio store :D If you ever want to melt a girl's heart, win her something at a claw machine...or, in rare cases, a giant robot ;)
On Saturday we dropped by A-kon for all of 2 hours, mainly so I could attend a panel I had been asked to do. I guess they held A-kon at the hotel ATTACHED to DFW airport this year to make it more convenient for people flying in, but for people driving, it was a nightmare. I've been to DFW about 10 times in the past year, and Leandra has flown in and out of that airport her whole life, and it *still* took us 45 minutes of circling around the terminals to find the damn hotel. We barely made it to the panel on time, and in the end, I was barely involved in it (mostly of my own volition).
It was nice meeting Machine, Adiamante and MexicanJunior -- thanks for the Sprite, you cheeky bastards :) I'm sure Carlos got just enough footage of me to make me look like a buffoon in his upcoming documentary :D
Why is everyone always so surprised that I have a deep voice? Are people expecting Kathy Ireland to come out when I open my mouth or something? (oops, that sounded dirty ^_~) Leandra was livid with jealousy when Carlos dropped to his knees in front of me. Hehe, just kidding man.
After a brief dealer room stroll following the panel, we said goodbye to A-kon. For dinner, we got some take-out sushi and tonkatsu, and ate it amongst the frogs and crickets on a small rock outcropping at a local creek. Wasabi is great stuff. I personally hate it, but it's really funny to watch your girlfriend grimace in agony while waving her hand wildly about, and then give a thumbs up and croak out, "Good stuff!" Unfortunately, we underestimated how quickly darkness fell, so by the time we were done, it was pitch black. We were VERY lucky that Leandra had decided to bring candles, otherwise we would have been completely fucked out there. I actually injured my shoulder when I slipped on the wet mud and grasped wildly at a tree branch for support. If it doesn't get better soon, I'll go see a doctor. Right now it hurts like hell to extend my arm horizontally out to the side.
We ended up seeing Star Wars on Sunday -- I'd already seen the movie, but I wanted to see the Matrix trailer again :D Anyway, the theater lights were still on 5 minutes into the movie and people started grumbling, so I went outside and asked the concession stand guys if they could get someone to turn them off. The following amusing exchange ensued:
Concession stand guy 1: Okay, I'll take care of it.
Concession stand guy 2: How are YOU going to take care of it? You work the concession stand!
Concession stand guy 1: So do you! Anyway, I'm gonna go talk to Jimmy.
Concession stand guy 2: Okay, so you mean JIMMY is going to take care of it.
Concession stand guy 1: Bah. ::disappears into a back room::
So, er...yeah. The lights went out about 30 seconds afterwards.
I found myself getting really irritated at the way Hayden Christensen spoke. It's worse than just reciting, it's reciting BADLY. Every time Anakin opened his mouth, Leandra buried her head in my shoulder and groaned.
Anyway...saying goodbye this time was really rough. I'm probably going to try and go back for a week some time in August.
On the plane ride home, I read the scariest fucking story ever. It's called "The Road Virus Travels North" (or something like that) from Stephen King's latest short story compilation, "Everything's Eventual." I can't decide what I think about King's short stories. They're always compelling at first, but the pay-off is usually vaguely unsatisfying. They're always so self-contained and random that both ends of the stories always feel frayed. For instance, in one older story, a couple drives through a small town and stays overnight in a small house. Then it rains killer frogs, and they eat the couple. That's the whole story, right there. Weirdness.
Tonight is my first kendo class! I'm excited about it, but I really wish that it didn't start tonight. I'm so tired from getting back at 2 am last night. And there's the whole annoyance of my shoulder...
Tomorrow evening Leandra and I are going to try a "movie-phone date" that my friend Yen told me about once. Basically, we watch the same movie at the same time, all while on the phone with each other. The movie, of course, will be "Vanilla Sky" :Þ

Ahhhh! In less than 24 hours I'll be in Dallas!! Why did those geniuses decide to hold it at a hotel ATTACHED to the airport?? It's going to be hell for people who aren't staying at the con hotel...parking, getting lost around the MASSIVE D/FW airport, etc. Urgh. Originally, we were planning to be in and out of the con, stopping by for a panel or showing, then going out to eat, then coming back, etc...now it looks like each day will be like, "Okay, so we're at the con now...if we leave, that's it for the day."

My mp3's aren't quite as cool as EK's, but she likes this one too, so download it, you buggers!
I signed up for an evening kendo class today...I start Monday, and go every Monday and Wednesday until the beginning of August. Really looking forward to it.
